Hey Curt- Heard you were heading for the great wilderness of the Northeast..... in search of a 67 L78 car.... Documented even....

How did it turn out??? Heard it was a steal of a deal, how'd you do???

Just found a place with wifi. I'm up in Fort Kent Maine. Not very freindly on the cell service and wifi's up here. I basically went as far as you can go up here without hitting the END of the road. Or you can say the end of the USA. You really can't get any further without a horse or a dirt bike.

Just took possession of a real 67 L78 sold here new at the local dealer. Framingham car. Complete owner history with dealer involvement and some documentation. The car has spent it's entire life right here within 20 miles of the dealer. This is a very small town and almost everyone seems to know about the car and the owners. Spent two hours today with the original owner going over the history.

I'll keep the price to myself.

I'll get some pics up just as soon as I can. The car is now red/black vinyl top with a black interior. Suppose to be Capri Cream/black top with a Gold bucket seat interior. The vinyl top is original and showing some wear. Currently driveable but will need a restoration.

The car should get to Indy within one or two weeks. Its waiting to be picked up by a transport company in Presque Isle, Maine. With the snow coming down I just didn't have the desire to take many more photos. I will when it gets back. This is a very nice unrestored driver that will need a complete frame off restoration. The current paint is 16 years old and obviously wrong. It has been stored for most of it's life between the owners of which I have all names, addresses and even phone numbers for a complete owner history. I know there will be skeptics out there, but the evidence I've obtained is overwhelming. I am going to have one of our members come out and verify for himself. I am obviously very excited about the find. The new freinds and help I've received from Team Chevelle has been great and I am very glad that I can stop traveling all over the Country in my search. :beers:

Personally.. I don't think that is anyone's business... right up there with asking someone how much money they make or the like :noway: ..no offense.. he may have no issue telling everyone how much he paid.. but I know I would not consider it anyone's business, least not in an open web site forum.

Cool! '67 L-78's were very low production #'s, less than all other years offered, wonder why? I think there were more produced in 1970 year even though it was being phased out. I would restore to orig. , but that is me, I know, red looks the part.

Curt,

It looks really good just like it is right now. If it was me, I would drive it as is next summer. Then if you still want a full restoration, I would shoot for the Winter of 2010-2011.

Does it still have the original console?

driller
Oct 27th, 09, 1:42 PM
Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Byron, my thoughts exactly. I will keep it as a driver through next summer and then start the restoration in winter of 10. Also, if I tear down another car before my elcamino is finished, could cause a major issue with the wife. So I must finish the elk first and I just don't have the room for that many parts lying around anyway.

I will be taking it back to it's original color and detail. Yes it has the original console in it. Its been widely known that I've been looking for a triple black car, however, finding an L78 I think you would agree that the color would not be an issue. I'd have taken a pink car with purple interior to get this. I have never seen a Capri Cream car with a Gold interior before up close but I did find a nice picture of this combo and I really liked it. It grows on you quickly! I just saw the pics of RoyalPlum's 67 car, that is sweet to say the least! I'm definately looking forward to the project.
thanks all

Curt, in your opinion what was the most effective tool in your rare car search?

Letting everyone know what you were looking for?
eBay / car sales sites / other?

What I'm asking is "what was the tidbit that led to finding this car?"

The L78 is the option code for the 375 horsepower engine that was available. 67's are very rare, as the option was discontinued from the start of production August '66, until it was re-released in March-April-ish of 1967. According to Tonawanda Engine records, only 612 cars were built with the L78 engine, all 4 speeds.

Im not saying I care about the price. But some people are intrested in this sort of information because they want to know where the market is at for rare cars like these right now. Which also makes total sense to me.

FWIW. When I was looking for a 69SS. I was curious in everyone that had bought one at the time and what they paid for it, until I found and bought mine. Ill tell you I wasnt the only one that was intrested in what a guy paid for it. It wasnt that I was intrested in some sort of personal finance thing. I was only wanting to know what they were going for and keeping a prospected budget in mind. IMO, I hardly feel thats asking something like what someone makes in a year.

Not that I disagree. Its just my prospective.

I'm with both of these guy's on this. I don't care what kind of money others make. It would just be cool to know what a guy would have to pay to get into a car like this these days.

Well.. in the for WHAT IT'S WORTH category... ;) I was only expressing my personal opinion on the subject.. not saying everyone has to feel the same way I do.. not at all.... I was not trying to set anyone straight either.. apologize if that was how it came across. I also don't want someone's post of sharing great news to take a turn from what the intent was.. sharing great news... so again, my apologies for expressing my opinion.

Obviously at this point, if the original poster wanted to share what he spent on such a car, he would have done so, but again.. that is his choice.

Carry on~

As far as I can tell there is a difference between "what it's worth" catagory and the "what I paid" catagory. So, since this is the "what it's worth" thread, I'll keep the price to myself. :D Seriously, wouldn't there be many items that would determine the value of a car? Originality, restoration, options, condition, history, market, economy, just to name a few.

I will tell you one thing, the previous owner knew completely that the car came to the dealership originally with the 375hp option, however he does not know how many were made. You guys and gals need to remember that many households up in that part of the Country do not have access to the internet or even care about it. Information like whats here on this site is non exsitant or not readily available. This could greatly affect the price off older type items. Barrett Jokeson hasn't messed up this part of the Country yet. But I will also say that they are not ignorant and he had a pretty good idea of what a car like this should be worth. It was a good price but definately not a steal.

Now, I honestly have no idea what this car is worth? It is an unrestored driver that needs a full restoration with a couple of nice options.

I can respect that, just wanted to more bout the car, like all ori. running gear? ect ect. Some people dont mind telling and if your happy with the price thats all that matters. Even though thats that part of the country doest mean you cant find a good deal in civilization thats for sure.I paid 8800. for my 67 true ss conv., doc. bench seat 4 speed blue on blue. couple years ago, needs full resto, but was a driver . Anyway, that was my only intentions was to know more bout the car and how much it went for.the info wasnt to try to attack you personaly.I guess the car is worth what the seller will sell it for and the buyer will buy it for.

bcmiller
Oct 30th, 09, 11:55 PM
I did check a couple price guides, but with a rare car like this, I doubt they have a good handle on what it is worth. And as Curt said, a lot of things can affect that.

Just going by one of the price guides I looked at based on condition - I am going to list #4 to #1 condition. I don't know what it would be rated at. I have not seen the car.

#4 - $13,150
#3 - $21,500
#2 - $26,650
#1 - $37,275
Plus add 30 percent for L78 (personally I think it should be at least 50-60 percent)
Plus add 8 percent for 4 speed
Plus add 5 percent if it has factory guages

Again, these are not my numbers. The 67 L78 Chevelles are so rare that I doubt the price guides have a good handle on what they are worth. Like other things, the rules of supply and demand usually determine value. And the supply in this case is EXTREMELY limited.
