I love telling this story.
I got my hands on a 64 Malibu SS about 7 years ago from the 2nd owner for (get this)$1500.00.The guy I bouhgt it from bought it from someone in Fla.He drove it home to Ct. rebuilt the motor in 1978 then parked it in 1981.My son heard about it from a friend of a friend so we went to take a look.I could not believe what I was looking at for 1500 bucks. He had it running in his driveway with no exhaust and it sounded awsome. It has a 327 (engine ID code F0325JQ) with a 4 speed trans. As my son and myself are looking at this car my son is starting to ask questions.1st he says
"is this an real SS" and the guy says"yes" then my son says " is it a real 4 speed"?Now the guy is looking a little puzzled and he says yes its a real 4 speed and he starts to tell us about how and when it was build. Then my son says "is the price firm"?I could`nt believe what I was hearing from this kid.The guy says yes its a firm price.SO,I told him I would be back the next day with the money. When I went back he had put a new diehard battery in and I drove it home with the biggest smile.
I have been looking to find out how many 64 Malibu SS`s were built with this 327 4 speed combo.Someone in the wecome forum told me to go to chevellestuff.com and I did but they only tell how many(8335) 327 motors were in a 64 not with a 4 speed. Is there any way to find out
Thanks Tim

Chevrolet never kept statistics like that so we really don't know. They kept stats of how many of each engine and how many of each transmission, but not how many of the many possible combinations.

Roger, copy. And anytime you see/hear of a Chevelle being sold as being 1-of-any number, it's a sham when it's based on a combination of any two things such as engine/transmission/color/body style. Dan Carr produced a 68-72 poster sometime back where he broke down the statistical numbers on different models with different engines, transmissions, etc. but it was not, and did not claim to be, an accurate representation of what Chevrolet sold, only a mathematical distribution. Accurate? No. Unbiased? Yes.

It was intended to show a mathematical distribution based on things like the number of a particular engine (and/or transmission and/or ZL2 hoods in a particular year) sold vs. the number of possible body styles it was available in.

For example, for 1970 sport coupes made up approximately 84.63% of the coupe/convertible/pickup body styles the LS6 could be ordered with. A proportional distribution of the 4,475 LS6 engines would be 84.63% in sport coupes, or 3,387 LS6 sport coupes. Convertibles were 2.29% and pickups (El Camino) was 13/07%. See http://ls6registry.com/tech/models_sold.htm.

Is that a true and accurate amount? No. But it is an equally proportioned distribution. When one tosses in transmission types, i.e., M22 and TH400, or ZL2 cowl induction hoods in a calculated proportional amount, you get a proportional figure based on another calculated proportional figure. The 'accuracy' of each successive calculation dwindles significantly.

If you look at http://www.chevellestuff.com/1964/options_by_model.htm, you'll see the 327/250 (JQ) wasn't available until March. Then look at all the body styles it was available in - essentially any V8 series/body style. Of course since it wasn't available until March, you'd have to figure...

1. The total number of V8 series/body styles sold from March to the end of production (which can't be accurately done since production numbers reported were not by series/body style). So, right off the bat whatever figure one comes up with is a statistical possibility.
2. What percentage of those in #1 were Malibu SS (sport coupe I assume) series/body styles.
3. Multiply that percentage by the number of L30s reportedly sold to get a figure for the number of L30s sold in Malibu SS sport coupes.
