Out in the N.E. section in La Grande, a newly re-opened Texaco station is pumping gas the old way.
"Check your oil, sir?" as your windshield is being cleaned and your tank is being topped.

Back in the 1960s I worked at a station just like this, but in El Paso Texas.

edit: What other old-time operating gas stations do you know of? Pictures Please! I've got more, too.

Cool place, would be nice to have a filling station with a working garage again, very few seem to exist anymore around me.

Very Cool indeed. I was 17 and worked at a "filling station" and checked many a dipstick cleaned countless windows, and filled plenty of cars. I think that in Oregon, a customer cant fill his own gas. It is a state law.

This is about as good as we get around here. It is not a functioning garage but the front office part is full of B-A collectables. It's a nice back drop for old car photos. New-old gas stations would be a welcome trend.

there used to be an old school type garage/forecourt,and sales room in dublin ireland , it was in existance for about 50 or 60 years.....some builder bought it and then knocked it down:(, it was a landmark for petrol heads, he was made rebuild it but it is nothing like it used to be, a terrible shame

The building style is darn near identical to my grandfathers old "station" in eastern washington (minus the canopy)... They had long since stopped pumping gas, but when i was little they still had the islands and the pumps, and I would "play" at filling up grampa's 65 bonneville, checking the tires & cleaning the windshield.

The bathrooms were right out of the 50's, even had the old ACE COMB machine on the wall in the mens room (i was always disapointed there were no combs in it)

Good memories :)

That is cool. There is a small Texaco station in the town I live in that has been restored. It's not a working station like this one. The guy has small cruise-ins and lets people use it for photo shoots. He usually has a couple 30s or 40s cars sitting out front. I'll take a couple pictures the next time I go by there.

The MEN's room at the stations I remember had machines on the wall---------------------------------but they didn't have combs in them! The contents of the machine cost a quarter! :D
The bigger, busier stations had two machines! :D :D

Lagrande only has about 15,000 people, and the same guy owns all the stations.

Better English than most Californians ;) :D

You know it is nifty and all but the "get your oil checked and window washed" still happens in Oregon in the smaller towns where I buy my fuel. Besides here it is against the law to pump you own fuel still. The grocery store pumps are not as well run IMO......

My dad had a gas station years ago that had 3 bath rooms one for women in the front and one for white men and one around back for colored people. The place is still there but is no longer a gas station. All the old school gas stations around my area have turned into out door bars and taverns now.:beers::beers:

Now that right there brings some memories....Could you imagine how long a pump attendant would last nowadays when he whipped out a wad to give you change back....It sure was a simpler time and I do in fact miss it.

I had forgotten about the cash wad my uncle use to carry around ( he owned a Standard service station in Skokie IL.) Ya that brings back the memories.

That station is identical (except for the canopy) to the Texaco Station on the corner where I grew up.

That is pretty cool! There was few of these style station left when I was a kid, pumps where a little different but same concept. I know i've seen some Sinclair stations that still look old school, but I don't think they are full service.

I think A&W Root Beer stands, Outdoor theaters are tops too

When I was in high school (early 60's) I worked in a Phillips 66 station in the little town of Forney, TX. When I started I made $8 for a 12 hour shift and eventually made $12 for the 12 hour shift. I washed many windshields, pulled a lot of dipsticks and whisk-broomed a lot of floorboards. We also changed oil (Trop Artic was Phillip's brand), did lube jobs, hand washed cars and repired flat tires. It was quite common to have people come in and buy $1 worth of gasoline. I can remember gasoline price wars when we sold gas for 19.9 cents per gal.

We had a customer, an older lady, who periodically asked us to pick the gravel out of her tire treads (she did not like the clicking sound it made) and to change the air in her tires. We gleefully took care of her.

Another customer, an older man, had a 1950 Ford with a manual transmission that leaked. He got tired of having to refill it with 90 weight gear lube and asked us to fill the transmission with chasis grease. We told him that it was a bad idea but could not change his mind. It worked OK in the summer but he came back one cold winter day and complained that he was having trouble shifting gears, LOL.

We did not have a machine in the men's room but the station owner kept a supply of condoms in his desk. One customer came in one the first of every month and bought one of them, regular as clockwork.

Ah the good old days.
