: Rear Brake Flex Hose

Guys, I have a 70 SS Chevelle with a 454, not sure if it original or not but whatever. I found a busted brake line from the rear end to the driver side drum brake on the rear. I bought new tubing and had to flare it myself for both wheels. The problem is I tried to replace the rubber flex hose that goes through the frame crossmember to the rear end (the one with the junction block for the 2 axle lines). I got the replacement part from NAPA and it is like a hair, maybe 1/2" short for me to get the clip in on the other side of the crossmember so I had to put the old one back on. I called NPD and the one they had was the exact same length as the one I had so I guess I had the right part. Anyone have any advice??? Also, I have a tiny brake leak and it seems to be coming right out from on top of the rear end so I am guessing I did not double flare my lines quite right. I was going to go with the replacement lines that are pre-bent from NPD, anyone have any pointers. Thanks, Mike

Huevotoro,
The replacement hose I used from NAPPA was # 36586 and measured roughly 14" and fit fine. Is that the number you have? On my 12 bolt the hose mounts to a Bracket dead center over rear. Hope this helps some.............Jim.
By any chance do you have shocks diconnected and rear hanging down to low? Just a thought.

Yes, I had the car on a chassis lift when I tried to fit the the flex hose from the crossmember to the rear end, so the rear was hanging freely, do you think that the rear end hanging made the difference...should I try with the car on the ground? Thanks, also, I already ordered the pre-bent brake lines from NPD---they were only 36 dollars for the pair of stainless steel lines, I could not pass that up...I hope they will fix my leak. Thanks, Mike graemlins/beers.gif

As long as the shocks are still hooked up there shouldn't be a problem with rear hanging. I believe the hose is made to be long enough to compensate for when the shocks are fully extended should ya hit a bad bump in the road.Other then that and the hose # I can't think of anything else at the moment? Jim

Yes, my shocks were connected, but the rear was hanging like it would on the chassis lift. I don't know what to do. If I went to NAPA and searched for another hose that was the same except like 1/2" longer do you think that would work??? Thanks again for the help, Mike

You can take your hose to a hydraulic hose repair shop and they can make you a hose any length you want using your original distribution block. Most large cities have one so look in the phone book. They are used by heavy equipment companies andheating and cooling companies.

Just got home and checked the part number on the NAPA hose and it is 36586, the same one that you told me worked. Do you think I should retry it with the car on ground and the weight on wheels will make the difference in length up??? Thanks, Mike--PS--could my old hose be that little bit longer because it is so old and may have stretched?

NAPA said they could order me the exact same part but one inch longer, would that extra inch be a safety hazard---I think it should be OK but I am wondering since these are my brakes...thanks, mike

Shouldn't pose a hazard/problem. A good parts guy/gal with a catalog should be able to cross-reference the end types to length, and get a pre-made longer unit that'll work.

Went to NAPA and they ordered a hose that should have the exact same fittings as the one I have but it will be one inch longer. My car is 33 years old and I have had it just under 3 years....no telling whose done what to change it.....I hope this works and I hope it will be OK for the brakes---if you have any pointers I am listening.
