Are tall spindle conversions worth the money and effort?
Any one disappointed with their conversion? Anyone delighted with theirs?

Here's a nice long thread on the good, the bad, and the ugly of the tall spindle swap Buckle up! (http://www.chevelles.com/forum/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=005842#000000)

I did the conversion on my '71 Chevelle, but haven't driven it yet - nor will I get to anytime soon.

Wow! Thanks for the link. That was an interesting thread.
I think to keep everyone happy and run a really, really fair test, I'll do the tall spindle conversion on the right side and leave the left stock.
Thanks,

I would suggest doing a search on the topic. You will find days worth of readings on the endless debate of is it good or is it bad, those who like it and had no problems and those who had terrible problems with the setup.

I did the B-body swap on my 71 using Hotchkis upper arms. To me, the best mod I have done. No problems. However, I have not compared it to a "Performance aftermarket system" and as I said, many will tell you its a bad thing to do.

For me, the conversion was much cheaper for me to do then purchasing a full aftermarket kit.

Oh man did I really start all this? Opps didn't mean to start such a ruckus. Hey I'm one of the desenting voices, but remember it's your car in the end and you have to live with it. The geometry with the tall spindles is too screwy, and it isn't cheap when you figure in the cost of the upper arms. tongue.gif

Well, I'm one of the Pro tall spindle swap bigots, so go for it!

There are several misconceptions that everyone likes to throw around, but ultimately, you need to decide what is best for you!

First off, you DO NOT HAVE to go with the aftermarket tubular upper arms... it works just fine with stock upper arms and NO, you do not end up with mega-shim-pack if done with the right parts. Second, if you are going to do it, then make sure you upgrade to the 12" rotors while you're at it... doesn't really cost any more and contrary to what some say, it does make a difference. Finally, are there still some geometry issues and such from the swap?? You bet! This is not a GM engineered swap or solution to anything! You do end up with a less-than-perfect geometry, but it sure is better and feels better than the stock setup! Will you get increased bumpsteer? Hard to say as it's different for every car, but I have not had any issues what-so-ever with bumpsteer on my 71 after the conversion.

best of luck and remember, it's YOUR car!

I still love mine. No weird s*** from it, and I drive it hard every day I get the chance. Even if the roads are wet.

You've seen my opinions in the linked thread. "That's my story and I'm stickin' to it". graemlins/thumbsup.gif
