: Thoughts on advancements in the medical profession...
firstchevelle Oct 18th, 09, 8:05 PM I vol at our small island fire dept, and am a first responder. I am planing on taking paramedic classes as I can get most of it paid for by the fire station with no obligation other then what I already do. How would a paramedic move up to a MD position, other then the education part. Would a seasoned paramedic still be required just a long a residency after graduation? Just pondering the night away over a few beers. Aced my advanced cpr training today, and feal real good about knowing the proper way to dislodge anything my 3 year old, or my 3 week old chokes on rather then relying on anyone else for help ;).

Im a molecular biology major about to graduate/ also have been an EMT for 3 years now. The only "way" to get into Medical School or become an MD is by taking med school pre reqs, and writing the MCATSs.What you have done is terrific extracirricular activites, but you need the education part to get into medical school to become an MD. Check out the AAMC website for more information on the topic, or MD forums.
firstchevelle Oct 18th, 09, 10:32 PM I have all but finished my BS in computer networking...(I have known the innerworkings of how a computer works since I was 12 and got ahold of my dads old technical books and his comodor 8088) and have absolutly no interest in persuing it. I was hoping some of that might qualify for some of the prereqs (the evil english/math/humanities, though I realy enjoyed logic, but dispised psycology) I actualy look forward to the MCATS, as standardized tests from information from textbooks comes naturaly to me. The only part that realy bums me is the intership portion...but thats all a part of it I guess.
Greg Oct 24th, 09, 7:13 PM How would a paramedic move up to a MD position, other then the education part.
It wouldn't matter if you were a paramedic for 20 years, there's no way to "move up" to becoming an MD (or DO) other than the "education part."
You have to attend and graduate from an accredited medical school in order to become an MD or a DO.
Would a seasoned paramedic still be required just a long a residency after graduation?
Yes.
You'll learn much more in medical school than what you learned to become a paramedic.
Therefore, after graduation from a medical school, being a "seasoned paramedic" will give you no advantage in a residency program.

Those are just general education curricula, which are pretty generic to most Bachelors degrees.
In order to get into medical school, your undergraduate curriculum must include a lot of biology and chemistry (organic and inorganic).
A degree in computer networking doesn't fit the bill.
Just curious, if you're interested in medical school, why did you major in computer networking?
I really enjoyed logic.
In that case, have you ever given any thought to law school?
You can get into law school with pretty much any type of Bachelors degree...and law school is only 3 years.
Regards,
-Greg

Charlie, I am a medical doctor and second Greg's statements. Becoming a medical doctor is a very long and challenging evolutionary process. The sacrifice and training is well beyond that of any other profession. Being a paramedic is great and has its place in the medical field but does very little in preparing you for the jouney of becoming an MD.
You seem intelligent, energetic and enthusiastic. Research the profession a little more and if you think becoming a doctor is something you really want to do, go for it...It will all pay off in the end.
The gratification of becoming a bonafied MD is like no other and will be with you for the rest of your life...Not to mention it pays pretty well also
