Here's the deal: I've got a '69 big block w. power steering and the pump has two problems. 1.) the pulley will not stay tight no matter how much I lean on it. 2.) the seal also leaks and throws fluid all over the place. Is it more trouble than it's worth to try and rebuild? It is orig. a rebuilt from NAPA. Are parts, like the shaft, available in some sort of a kit? Or, is it easier in the long run to just go get another rebuilt and hope for better luck? TIA for any and all input.

the pulley nut should be a self locking type and the pumps are easy to rebuild. the hardest part is pressing or tapping the sleeve bearing that the shaft rides on out and the new one in. the rebuild kit was 11 bucks at auto zone.

Try NAPA again. I just purchased a Power steering pump for my small block 66 from them. I also purchased a #'s matching windshield wiper motor from NAPA. I think I paid $40 or so for a new Saginaw P/S pump. Easier to bolt on a new one than rebuild the old one. Plus it looks exactly like the old pump, even better. If your local NAPA has a machine shop don't forget to have them press off the old pulley and press on the new one while you are there.

The 1969 pump requires a key to fit into keyways machined into both the pump driveshaft and the pulley hub. This key design was used until 1975 when all GM pumps were converted to a press fit pulley to driveshaft attachment.
It sounds as if you are missing the key.

I did the same thing as Chevydog66 a while ago. Not worth it fooling with rebuild kits, IMO. Also makes a terrible mess to change the pump, so you only want to do it once and do it right ;)

Follow-up: Did get a rebuilt pump from NAPA and used my old reservoir. Not really a big deal to do and hopefully won't have any leaks!
JIML82- had the key on the old pump, but perhaps a loose pulley caused a wobble that basically tore up the shaft in a way I have never seen before and I have seen quite a few torn up shafts here on the farm. It obviously spoiled my "correct" pulley, so now I'm looking for another one but if I can't find one, I have a spare tht looks right, just wrong #. With the hood closed, nobody knows but me!
