: anyone familiar with LCD tv repair.
no1dc Oct 18th, 09, 1:46 PM My son's 42" LG LCD had a water bottle fly into it and damaged it. It comes on but the picture is just lines. He contacted Best Buy there in Springfield Missouri and they want 150.00 diagnostic fee plus 800.00 to fix it. Anyone have any experience or know of anyone that fixes these things. TIA Pete
1badss396 Oct 18th, 09, 2:01 PM Sounds like you are either going to have to pay $950 to get it fixed, or go buy a new one? Dont you have an extended warranty on it?
You can get a new 42" LCD for less than $950. Probably with better specs since they keep improving.
no1dc Oct 18th, 09, 3:48 PM No extended warranty. It was purchased just before Circuit City anounced their financial problems. I was afraid the cost was going to be close or equal to a new one. I guess things just aren't made to be repaired anymore. The inability to affordably repair broken items has been a hard concept for me to accept. I grew up repairing things instead of just throwing things away. Pete

I'm guessing they would have been able to tell that some force damaged it and it would not have been covered by a warranty anyways. Your point about not repairing stuff is absolutly true. Where I work, we seal the boxes containing our engine controllers together with RTV. When the computer on your car goes bad, the dealership sends it to the OEM and they send it to us. When we get a damaged one back, we might mill them open to see what went wrong, but there's no way it can be repaired and resold. The circuit board is glued to a metal plate (for heat sinking purposes) and that plate is trashed by the milling process.
Jcdubs Oct 18th, 09, 4:51 PM I just saw a 42" LCD Sanyo in costco for $575.

I can relate; unfortunately we now have a throw-away society. :( So, did that water bottle have wings? ;)

Wings, no!! Aided by instantanious contraction of the tricep muscle and murphy`s law. In other words reaction to a bonehead error by the Yankees, the over exuberant fans reaction to that error and the water bottle being contacted by the fans arm accidentally enabling this stationary object to gain the necessary force to dislodge it from the table on which it lied. The dislodging resulted in the water bottle sailing across the room hitting a laptop table(which was slightly tilted) enabling it to attain the angle and slight lift it needed to hit the TV. I think said fan is now instructed to purchase a straight jacket to be worn during playoff games.

LOL! At least the old-school TVs could take some abuse. :D

I agree, I had a old tv once and it went down a flight of stairs while moving and crashed at the bottom and it still worked just fine for years after that. Now try that with a new flat screen:D
d1_bradley Oct 19th, 09, 11:14 AM The flat panel itself is about 95% of total cost of the TV. So their repair cost is about right. Just buy a new one. It will have a better picture anyway. AND, the idiot who threw the bottle should be the one paying up.
1badss396 Oct 19th, 09, 11:44 AM Pete you sure it was a water bottle and not the Wii game, LOL

Rich-L79 Oct 19th, 09, 11:56 AM That's why those Wii Remotes have a little lanyard for placing around your wrist....

I love how the guy gives it a few feeble taps at the end, expecting it to clear right up, lol.

The "idiot" who aided the water bottle into flight IS paying for it. I'm just trying to help him out. Pete
