My 69 acts like it has antilock brakes. When you hit the brakes you slow to a stop but they will not come close to locking up. Serious brake fade? Ideas?

How does the pedal feel? Is it spongy, or does it have a nice, firm feel?

You could simply have air in your lines. Maybe your fluid is low. Another possibility is that you have some rubber lines that are going bad and they are expanding on you and taking away some of the pressure that should be applied to your calipers. I guess I mention that, becuase I'm doing a brake swap and noticed that my front left hose had a nice sized bubble in it. Good thing I swapped them out before it popped.

If it has power brakes, the booster could be defective or the vacuum supply to the booster is not working properly.

Thanks for the input. Sorry it took so long for me to reply.

TH, the pedal does not feel spongy, just hard. The fluid level is normal and the front rubber lines are new.

JW, the booster is new and vacuum is supplied by an electric vacuum pump. Constant 21. New ones have been bad before though...

Did you put new drums on recently? If the pads had any grooves in them, they might not have evened out yet. Although, I'm sure if the drums were replaced, most people would do the shoes at the same time.

Sounds like your not getting enough vacuum to the booster. You might try Teeing the vacuum supply so you have both engine vacuum supplimented with auxillary pump vacuum.Thats the way these units are used in an OE application.

I had a truck one time that someone put oil in the brake cyl. It swelled up the brake hose & closed off the line. Brake pedel hard as a rock & no brakes. Had to replace ALL rubber parts

I gotta throw this in: -- Hydratech hydroboost. My car stops better than it EVER did. It's quite simply amazing.

I too, just installed a Hydratech Hydroboost system, on my 70 Malibu and it stops on a dime. It works great, just like Larry says. A bit pricey though, but money well spent, in my opinion.
