My brother in law just picked up a 67. It looks to be an SS as it has the 13817 vin. I believe the trim tag is loooong gone. Any ideas how I can find out what it was born with??
Thanks

So many questions here...

I assume you don't have a TITLE?

Post some photos? esp. of that VIN tag

Does the dash have a wood grain Finish or black crinkle type?

Does the VIN tag look tampered with?

Honestly, with so little information .. it is really hard to say what he has.. :(

If it is a real 138 car then it was born with a 396.
Three different horsepower available.
325/350/and 375. Very rare to be a 375.
Could have been a PG/T400/3 or 4 speed.
Floor or column shift.
Bucket or bench seat.
Would have a 12 bolt rear end.
Many variables.
The VIN won't reveal any option info.
Hope that helps.....tell you that the VIN doesn't reveal much on these cars......but it will tell you if it was originally an SS or not.

Everything Herb says is on the money. BUT I still caution you to verify the vin tag is the one that came on the car. When a trim tag is not there, you need to question everything when it comes to claims of SS status. We all to often to get caught up in the trap of just looking for 13817 or 13867.

I hope it's the real deal. :)

Depending on the final assembly plant, the trim tag may only tell you the interior color/type and paint color (Baltimore & Fremont) or may show some options such as tinted windshield or all glass, A/C, automatic vs. manual trans, deluxe seat belts, etc. (all other plants). A trim tag WILL NOT tell you if an optional engine was ordered, rear end ratio, power steering/brakes, etc.
