I have a 1993 Chevy Truck 3500 Crew Cab Dually.
This is my towing rig. Its a completely stock Tonawanda 454 engine with TBI injection
Has the 4L80E Auto trans and im unsure about the rear grear.
This engine is a WUSSSS. I think its the peanut port headed motor. Redlines at 4000-4500rpms and doesnt make power at anything over 2500rpms. Im sad to say that my Vortec Wee-oh-5 in my half ton silverado will outrun this truck on the highway pulling a load and get better gas mileage.
What Can I do?
I have a set of 396 Closed Chamber 101cc oval port heads and Truck long tube and shorty headers to go on it. Will probably get dual exhaust (which I want to be quite)
Im guessing that its factory roller cam with flat top valve relief pistons. Compression is probably around 7.5-8 to 1 im guessing. With the 101cc head it will be around 9.5:1
What intake should I look for to keep the TBI and should I do a cam swap? Im guessing its factory roller cam but unsure

My guess is your truck has about the same engine as a 454SS. I would start with a cam swap first. The factory cam sucks. If you already have the heads and they would raise compression, then go for it. Edelbrock makes a TBI intake. But I think you will find the throttle body is a big limiting factor, both in airflow CFM (like maybe 670cfm) and in fuel flow (80lbs injectors). The throttle body can be bored out, but I do not know of any larger injectors. You can up the fuel pressure to 18psi and get a bit more fuel. Of course you would need a custom tune in the ECM for all this.

Definately agree on the cam swap, but you can use any intake you want instead of dropping the big money for a TBI speciffic unit. They make adapter plates dirt cheap so that you can use a standard 4150 flanged carb intake - and keep the TBI. (transdapt makes them IIRC) Check out www.cfm-tech.com (http://www.cfm-tech.com) - they have lots of cool stuff for the TBI engines. As for chip tuning, it's pretty easy and the stuff to do it is cheap if you already have a lap top. Check out Craig Moates site for the software and accesories. Or, Brian @ TBIChips.com is a good source if you want something mail order.

Adjustable fuel pressure regulator, raise the fuel pressure to get more fuel from the injectors.
