: any pro touring el caminos here?

Just curious if there are any here. Post pics if you got them. I`m planning on finally picking up a 65 elky I`m doing a trade for and it already has 17" american racing wheels so I started thinking of going in the pro touring direction. I`m mainly interested in 64-65 models but post what you got.

Mine is working more towards "touring" and less towards "pro" :beers:

An El Camino can do anything a Chevelle can... make just a good of a starting point... has a better weight distribution to begin with...

But you do have to decide on just how much you want to compromise the hauling potential of the El Camino.

I`ve had several chevelles and el caminos and like them both equally. I`m not really sure how I want to do this one up but I figured since the PO already started heading in the PT direction with the 17" wheels I`d look around and see if thats what I want to do with it. I`m still considering just going with rally`s for a clean driver look. I`m not planning to hot rod this one like I have done with my others, at least not at this point.

You know what? There is another guy on here with a 67 Elky that's pro-touring. I think his name is TunedbyTad or something like that. He'll probably chime in.

I know which one your talking about but last time I saw anything about it on here it was stock with the wheels. I know he updated it but I haven`t found any threads on the current version. I`ll have to go look again.

Keith's was real nice. Search KAA and check out his in cabin videos on the track. Unbelievable.

I will post my 71 Elky shortly. Not nearly as nice as Keith's (work in progress), but I do have the same ZR1 rims, lowered to same height, 4 inch cowl, and a 470BB with a 174 supercharger.

Keith had huge brakes, FI 496, all the suspension goodies, and many a Corvette guy upset that he could and would run them down on the track. That was a real deal car that he drove on the street and raced on the track, even was featured in a magazine.

I've modeled my '70 after Keith's, but it has a 400+hp LS1 and an Auto (daily driver). Next month GW "A" arms go in, new spindles/steering arms from www.customworks.com, C5 Brakes front/rear. Parts are in the shop and ready to go on. Already has C5 wheels, 255 front and 285 rears.
I drive my cars and want to take it out to ThunderHill and a few AutoX's.

"Pro-touring"..... I'm no Pro....but I have plenty of $$$$ into mine now. I dislike that term, as it really doesn't mean much to me. What I liked most about Keiths El was it was EFI. I debated that to death(basically an endless mind f#*K with cost savings)

Build so far consists of all SC&C goodies(SPC arms/Howe's), Currie rear control arms, Varishock front/rear Single Adj, Kore 3/Baer 12" rotors/LS1 rears, 540ci, FAST EFI, AFR 305 CC, Morel rollers, Straub Custom Grind, Custom EFI Vroom Surge Tank and so on and so on....

My orignial goal was to put new heads on and spray the 402, as you can see I got off track a bit doing a full frame off resto and 15k later. Now I need bodywork/wheels and some color. I don't recommend my course of action.... :) unless you have plenty of time and would like to be broke.

This was the first car I bought in High School and has some sentimental value to me(19 yrs now) I hope someday to "detune" it and let the kids drive it.

1) It was over 4 years ago and no I don't keep records of who i sell cars to that long.
2) He bought through his business, some kind of body and paint shop in the Sacramento area...there are about a thousand or so body and paint shops in that area.
3) It was over 70 miles away, not exactly a local.

I used to have one, 67 white with gold interior. Sold it last year, needed the money. The place that bought it still has it. They painted it red with black interior, put Super Sport badges  on it and a cowl hood. Paint work is good and they straightened the bed out pretty good. Car looks good, but I preferred the white with gold interior, it was the original color scheme.

I nearly bought this El Camino a few years back... went to look at it, went for a drive, had the money with me (and it was a steal at the asking price)-- but it had quite a few little issues as the owner kind of lost interest near the end of the build and it showed. In the end decided I didn't need another car... although I still kind of regret not dragging it home with me as unique and cool as it was.

Lots of cool stuff... full custom fabricated tig welded chassis & suspension, body/frame was channeled and integrated with nothing hanging below the rockers and the entire bottom was about 5" off the ground, inboard rocker actuated coilovers out back, etc. Paint was OK but had a few problems, a few things weren't finished up yet or missing, and for me to be happy with it I would have had to gut, rewire, and replumb the entire thing.

Still, damn cool Elky and great chassis fab work! I think he put it on ebay eventually. I'm not sure where it ended up.

Man oh man! Lots of nice Minos! I especially would like details on that black one with the cowl hood...if anyone has information.

The owner and builders name was Vince Asaro. He was building it to run in the 150+ mph class at the Silver State Classic.

Nearly everything was one-off on that car as he owned a fab shop at that time. He fabricated the entire frame, cage, and suspension, body was channeled over the frame, rack & pinion up front, aluminum bed cover with wing, the fuel cell was ridiculously large like 35 gallons or so, etc.

At the time it had 17 x 9.5 up front and 17 x 11 out back with 275/315 tires and there was probably room for 295s up front and 335 to 345 wide out back (the rear tubs were huge.)

It had A/C, the interior looked fairly stock but had late model Acura seats.

Engine was a twin turbo 383 backed with a Turbo 400 and a very tight low-stall converter. It had either 2.23 or 2.56 gears in the rear end for running high speeds at the Silver State. Probably around 650hp, that's what it felt like from the seat. I believe it had Dart heads, an Elgin hydraulic cam in the low-mid .500 for lift, about 9:1 compression, the intake manifold was a tunnel ram lower with a custom plenum & throttle body arrangement up top. ECU was an Accel Gen VII. The engine liked to huff smoke out the exhaust on coast down, could have been valve seals or a stuck ring (Vince believed it to be a stuck ring as he admitted one ring had a little resistance in the ring land while shortblocking the engine.) It also liked to puke some oil out the breathers onto the headers occasionally and puff smoke out from the cowl hood (another thing I would have needed to fix, catch cans would take care of that.)

While part way through the build of the Elky he was navigator/timer for a friend running a Mustang in the Silver State; they were in a nasty 160mph crash which required a lengthy hospital stay. While recovering in the hospital is when he lost motivation to finish the Elky and he had no problems admitting that. Everything he did after recovering in the hospital wasn't up to the standards set earlier in the build and you can tell he only wanted to get it driving to sell it. It wasn't bad at all but there was a lot of little stuff that needed more detail work IMO; the plumbing & wiring was so-so, there were some silicone corks plugging holes in the cowl, one of the inner fenders wasn't done, the power steering had a nasty groan to it, etc.

Hell of a talented fabricator and a nice guy. I would have liked to have seen the finished product if he had as much motivation at the end of project as he did at the beginning.

About a month or two after I went and looked at it I believe it ended up on ebay; a quick google search dates the ebay listing back in April of 2005. Don't know what happened to it after that.

Now I'm back to regretting not buying it and finishing it. :p

The owner and builders name was Vince Asaro. He was building it to run in the 150+ mph class at the Silver State Classic.

Now I'm back to regretting not buying it and finishing it. :p

Sounds like you knew it from front to back. It's too bad you didn't get it because I'd love to see more of it too. Sad about the owner and the car.

Mine is slowly going that way. Next step is a set of 17s. my friend took this picture the other day at a car meet up in atlanta. I like the way it came out

Good eye, it is the varsity parking lot downtown. The first Thursday of the month there is an import meet there that is pretty unofficial but a bunch of cars show up no matter what. My buddies drive imports so I usually go up with them. There is a hand full of domestic stuff too so it isn't totally out of place. My friend just got a Nikon 7000 or something and was snapping some pics and this one came out pretty good.

Matt- If you were in the Northwest I would've guessed that to be my old el camino. Around 1990-93 I had a 72 very similar except the fender ducts. 350, manual trans, ac and power steering with rally wheels (15x7 front 15x8 rear).
Anyway, nice looking camino (wish I hadn't sold mine..)

Somehow my subscription to my own thread was removed. Anyway, I don`t have the same 65 el camino I had when I started this but I do still have a 65 el camino and it`s got the 17" American Racing wheels from the other car. Here is a pic of the car right befor i sold it as a roller with crappy wheels.

not really sure what direction to go with my current 65. Was thinking about going with Rally wheels but might keep the 17`s.

I like this one alot. I`d love to have a 70-72 as a daily driver instead of my 83 chevy shortbed.

If it`s the one in your sig it`s way out of my league. If i had the cash to buy one like that i`d just finish my 65, lol.

Here are some shots of my 70. It meets some definitions of Pro Touring, but it's got a long way to go to call it done. It has a 383 stroker w/mild cam, ported and polished heads, CPT 200R4 w/2400 stall, 3:73 12 bolt posi, 18's, and a laundry list of non stock stuff. I think it's finally time for body and paint. Buckets and a custom console in the near future. Just got to find more of that money stuff :)http://visyon.net/ec/images/protourer1.jpghttp://visyon.net/ec/images/protourer2.jpghttp://visyon.net/ec/images/protourer3.jpghttp://visyon.net/ec/images/rain1b.jpghttp://visyon.net/ec/images/protourer4.jpg

Thanks,
Yes, They are halo lights like the new Camaro and BMW's. I rewired the outside headlights for highbeam like a 71 and use the halos for daytime running lights. They show up better at night though.

Here is my take on Pro Touring for my '71. It's got a full roller 468ci, T56 6-speed, 12 bolt w/ 3.73 gears and Eaton Posi, QA1 adjustable coil overs up front with McGauphys 2" drop spindle and 13" big brake kit, 1 1/4" UMI sway bar up front, Hotchkis 1" sway bar out back with UMI tubular upper/lower control arms.

Cool deal, I'm in Carmichael. Do you attend any local shows? I was going to head to the Goodguys show this weekend, but of course it is going to be raining. That is the second in a row that will be rained out, and of course no refunds on entry fees. :-/ This rainy weather has got to go...it is June right?

No i haven`t been to any local shows. I`m a truck driver and gone alot so I don`t usually have time to go to any shows, especially pleasanton which I haven`t gone to since my daughter was 3 months old, she is not 6 1/2yrs old.

We use to live in Carmichael and plan to move back over there when our lease is up in September. We`ll have to get together sometime. I`d love to see your car in person.

Well if you're ever around on a Thursday night there is a show at the Fuddruckers on Sunrise that happens on every third Thursday of the month. I'm usually there.
