: Can't get brake pressure!

Okay, so my '64 Chevelle was coming together sooo good, till I bled the brakes! I had decided to use DOT 5 fluid, and after reading all the posts on the subject, I think I want to use DOT3 or 4. Reason is I'm having a very hard time bleeding it, but also because it will be a daily driver and will be often taken to Big Bear
mountains (many of you have not recommended using it in either situations).
So here's my question...what would be the best way to flush it out? The system is all new, from the master cyl. to wheels. Fluid was put in 2 days prior to this post. I don't have a pressure bleeder or compressor to blow out the lines. Can I just drain it and put DOT3-4 in, or will that give me problems later? :(

I wouldnt throw in the towel on dot 5 just yet.

Did you bench bleed the master cylinder before you installed it? And also let them Gravity bleed for a little bit by opening the bleeders at all 4 wheels and letting them drip a little. Make sure you keep an eye on the fluid level. It may take a while for fluid to get to the bleeders.

It seems many dont like dot 5 fluid but I have never had a problem with it in my 66SS and I had no trouble bleeding out the air.

Chris.

Thanks Chris, and for info on the shocks too.

Yea, I did bench bleed the master first, level in a vice. Though not thinking, I started at the driver front to pass. front, then rear. graemlins/clonk.gif
When I was finished I had about half pedal of pressure and called it a night. The next eve I started with Rr pass. to Rr driver to front and so on. While doing the rear, I opened the bleeder, my wife pressed the pedal to the floor, then I closed the bleeder. Using a clear hose with a jar of fluid, got the initial air out of the hose and then it was all fluid with some small bubbles. We did this several times and then it was all air, fluid stopped moving. I let it set 'bout 5 min. and tried again and then fluid was moving again. Three pumps like before and its all air! graemlins/angry.gif Very little fluid.

FYI checked all connections, calipers, cyl's, prop valve, no leaks.

Jim, make sure you have some free play in your master cylinder to pushrod. I had a time getting mine to bleed. I found that I had no clearance between the two & it had the master slightly applied.

rb69, I checked it out and it's good. I notice that when I let it sit awhile, the fluid settles I guess, and it will start flowing when pedal is applied but for a short time. This fluid seems very sensitive or I'm still overlooking something, not sure which at this point.
