bbmusclecars427 Oct 14th, 09, 2:16 PM I have always used "Plasticoat" brand automotive products.I realy like the chevy orange engine paint. It's thicker than most others and the shade looks good to me.
Bill Rose Oct 14th, 09, 2:22 PM Duplicolor makes 2 different Chevy orange's, for some strange reason. The correct one is part # 1620. It's a nice orange. I forget what the part# is for the other one, but it's not right.

I just went thru this. I used Duplicolor Engine Enamel DE 1607 Chev. Orange. This is the right color based on comparison to original paint on my engine. It is NOT bright orange, but the correct "reddish-orange". The other color, which I belive was stated above is listed as Chevrolet Orange. ??? Go figure....But yes there are (2) colors and picked the more reddish and my opinion correct color.
Trophyman Oct 15th, 09, 3:08 AM I believe the other orange was first used 55,56 57 then GM settled on our orange.
The first one was more reddish tinted
just my 2 cents. You get what you pay for.

cuisinartvette Oct 15th, 09, 10:53 AM BEst Chevy orange Ive seen was made by VHT...same with rallye wheel paint, dont think they make it anymore.
john5469 Oct 15th, 09, 11:14 AM This is the Dupli-Color over light gray self etch primer: Think it was the reddish orange.
Highway Star Oct 15th, 09, 11:22 AM I noticed that on the shelf at AutoZone they had both Chevrolet Red Orange and Chevrolet Orange Engine paint. I do not like the red orange color. I went with the plain orange. It looks awesome on my eddy intake, which I used a whole can of clear over the orange, and my new heads will be wearing it soon enough.
Bill Rose Oct 15th, 09, 11:58 AM This is a shot of the Duplicolor 1620. The camera flash does make it appear brighter. Personally I think it looks a whole lot better than the red/orange. I made the mistake of painting my Elky engine with the red/orange paint for the first coat. I thought it looked terrible. Thats when I discovered there were 2 different Chevy Orange colors, that Duplicolor makes. I bought a couple cans of 1620, to do the remaining coats. It's your call. Choose the color carefully. It's a hassle to change, once the engine is back in the car.

OLDED Oct 15th, 09, 2:09 PM I also think the #1620 is more original for the BBC's. The redder version is better matched to the 60 and back SBC's
wihaltom Oct 15th, 09, 2:14 PM This is with the Duplicolor 1607, I think.
I'd have to go home and look at the cans to make sure but it looks right to me.
Gene Gregory Oct 15th, 09, 6:53 PM I don't know if I used 1620 or 1607 the cans were empty so they got thrown out but it looks like Bill Rose's and John5469's pics . It's not the reddish orange , I think it will look right after everything is put back together and in the car.
Thanks Guys, Gene
Bob's66396 Oct 15th, 09, 7:10 PM I use the Dupli-Color #1607. I have had great results,no cracking or fading,and IMO,it is the "right" chevy engine orange for my '66 396... Bob:thumbsup:
Chris R Oct 15th, 09, 7:25 PM Has anyone used a paint gun and equipment to paint an engine?
Highway Star Oct 15th, 09, 9:44 PM I have read in a few other threads here about guys using BC/CC on engines and it working beautifully. Never done it myself though.
Coppertop Oct 15th, 09, 11:45 PM Here's how the 1607 (the more red-orange) looks on mine:
