: SBC 70's crate engines.....
Dave Birdwell Oct 13th, 09, 5:51 PM A friend has an early 70's smallblock crate engine. It has the XCD code, so I know it's a crate engine, I just can't find any info to tell me what is inside it. I'm thinking it's an LT1 crate assembly, but I don't have any info as to whats inside it. The casting date is early 1972. 010 block. Solid lifter cam. He's gonna pull the valve covers to see what heads are on it. My guess is something like either 186's, 292's, or 492's. Trying to avoid pulling the pan to see if it's 4 bolt mains, and what pistons are in it.
Thanks for any info you can give me.

Why do you think the XCD code makes it a crate engine?
Dave Birdwell Oct 14th, 09, 9:36 PM Why do you think the XCD code makes it a crate engine?
Because the casting date is like 1972, and the LS6 and LS7 crate engines are XAA and XCH respectfully....:yes: Sooooooo, using theory, which I say is a good thing, when used in moderation, and logic.....my assumption would be that it's a crate engine. Plus, coupled with the fact that production engines through like 1978 only used the C and T based suffixes.... :D
Mike Oct 14th, 09, 9:59 PM What's the whole code?
Note the full code on a crate LS7

Dave Birdwell Oct 15th, 09, 4:01 PM Well, like it makes a difference.... :rolleyes: V0426XCD
V=Flint
0426= April 26th
Mike Oct 15th, 09, 4:29 PM It may not make any difference Dave ,but I'm still trying to help.
Guess that's not enough so I'll give up too.
Anybody in possession of the MSA-1 small block suffix handbook? I only have the one for big block. FWIW I have found many codes in that book that I couldn't find on the Internet.
My money is on LT1 as well. :yes:
Mike Oct 15th, 09, 4:50 PM I've been trying to find mine without any luck.
All I've been told so far is it's a HP crate engine but no info on which one.
I've killed enough time on this.
lg1969 Oct 15th, 09, 5:19 PM I found something but I do not if this is right
V = Flint engine plant
04 = April
26 = 26th day
X = Crate engine ( they also use CE123456 on the pad for crate engine)
C = Chevy passenger car
D = Unkown (could not find it)
Hope this help
jfkheat Oct 15th, 09, 10:39 PM The CE on the over the counter engines stands for Chevrolet Engine not crate engine.
