I have a 66 chevelle convert, I'm thinking about buying a pair of kick panel speakers but there doesnt look like there is much room for them on the emergency brake side. Anyone have any encounters with these ?

got rid of my e-brake. wasnt connected to anything when i bought the car, and it had a 4 wheel disc conversion done already.

My kick panel speakers fit behind the e-brake without a problem.

They fit good and look good but applying the park brake can be a challenge. FYI

I think it makes a difference on what wattage speaker you buy on how far they stick out. I was going to modify the parking brake pedal with an offset by welding if I go that route. But I hardly ever use my parking brake.

You do realize it is illegal not to mention unwise to operate a car without a functioning emergency brake system.

put them in my 67ss. got the ones less the speakers from taymans and bought some pioneer speakers at wal mart for them. had to bend my e-brake connector slightly to miss the speaker grills. did not want to but it is not a big deal. think that some low profile grills would have been much beter. my exsiting kick panels were pretty ugly so I figured get new ones with the speaker mould. the sound at that location leaves a little to be desired. seems like if the speakers were located a little higher in the door panel would be ideal - but not an ideal look in a 67ss....

You can buy "cans" that fit in the vent holes if you're not using the fresh air vents, then mount the speaker in them.

What size speakers are you going to run? I have a pair of the design that accomodates 4x6 with grilles that look close to original. They have an access door in them also. Kenwood makes a speaker that comes with grilles that would work . Will sell 'em cheap if they will work. Never installed I just robbed the grilles for some Boston's.

Oops looked at their website and they be 67 only.

Not in this state...no annual safety inspection. :noway: Only emissions...and even then only in the heavier populated counties.

Just because there is no annual safety inspection doesn't change the fact that it's illegal to operate a car without a functioning emergency brake.

Illegal?? As in a ticketable offense??

OK...it's been a while since I've been pulled over and the officer tested my E-brake. :p ;)

its also illegal to go one mile per hour over the posted speed limit too. i take it you have never done that?

whats amazing to me is that my car was orginially built and licensed in california with no functioning e-brake.

John, had the same problem on my 67 Malibu, e brake pedel just hit the grill of the speakers in the new kick panels. I removed the bolt that holes the e brake bracket to the dash and moved the bracket over to the right about 1/2 inch and reinstalled the bolt, you gotta push it there. Not a problem no more and the e-brake functions just fine. But you will feel a difference when you go for your dimmer switch, it's ok but there is a different feel from what your use to with your foot.

Certainly ticketable if they become aware of your lack of an e-brake. Look up the codes in your area, all vehicles must have certain basic equipment such as tail lights, seat belts, headlights, windshield (without cracks), etc., etc. AND two methods of deploying the brakes. Emergency brakes are called "emergency" brakes for a reason. If you blow a hose or a line you'll play hell getting a 4000lb vehicle stopped without doing some collateral damage. I don't care how fastideous you are about maintaining the mechanicals of your car, it's required by law and common sense to have a redundant braking system.

I'd love to see the liability suit you'd face if your brakes failed, you hurt or killed someone and the prosecution found out the car had no functioning emergency brake. I would also venture a guess your insurance would drop you like a hot potato if they learned you hadn't maintained the car in proper fully operational condition.

Okay, forget the argument about legalities, it's FOOLISH to drive a car without a redundant braking system. You are not only risking the safety of yourself but all those around you. Brake systems do fail and not always at a time when it's convenient.
