been looking for a real 71 SS 4speed bench car for awhile now and found one thats been in sitting in abarn for alot of years.Went to have a look and it wasnt that bad so i bought it.No docs but the price was right.i got it home and started cleaning it.
It has the SS dash with tach and gauges,12 bolt, missing the engine and trans, big block steering shaft,2 fuel lines, disc brakes, original wheels.
Shes does need work as the front floors and trunk have rust holes. As i was removing stuff from the trunkl i noticed the drain plugs where missing and i could see what looked like paper through the hole.I ran and got the cutters, pry bar and started ripping the trunk floor up and then there it was the build sheet!!! I cleaned it up and one can read the vin and most opions from A-P.... lots of them (25 readable),most important the D88,F41,G94,J50,JL2,LS3,M20.
Any way its was so exciting to find the build sheet but......i might have to sell the car as now we both are laid off.
I will give you guys first stabs at the car if i decide to sell it.
1971 SS,402,4 speed,12 bolt 3.31,bucket seats,front consule,Blue exterior black interior,vinyl top,tinted glass,sport mirrors,deprssed wipers,tilt steering,sport wheel,ect....

Congrats on your find. I should point out though that tach & gauges were not an SS item. While the SS did include round fuel and speedo, gauges were optional. Additionally, a V8 Malibu (non-SS) coupe/convertible/pickup could also order the gauge package and it received the same round gauge dash as the base SS.

My 70 came with gages and F41 suspension disc brake, 3/8" fuel line and bolt in the steering coupler and 350 2 bl carb. Also the LS3 was option. Need to ask the experts but in 71 could you get the LS3 in a SS? In 1970 you couldn't. I not sure about 71.

In 71 and 72, any optional V8 (350-2, 350-4, 402-4, 454-4) could be ordered with the Z15 option since the option itself did not incude any specific engine. The flip side is the 350-2, 350-4, and 402-4 could also be ordered without the Z15 option - only the 454 engine required the Z15 option in 71 and 72. The 71/72 SS option also included a round fuel and speedo but no tach/gauges. Tach/gauges could still be ordered with any V8 Malibu coupe, convertible or pickup in 71 and 72 just as they could be since 1966.

so back in 71 a person could basicaly deck out a malibu with options (except a 454cid) and not have to order it as an SS.correct?
The build sheet has B22(SS door emblem),D88 sport stripe,NK4(sport steering wheel)PM7(15 white wall) codes along with the LS3/M20/ect..could a malibu be ordered with these in 71?

I would think GM wouldnt allow the B22 and D88 options on a malibu, maybe my thinking is wrong?

You are correct about the 454 engine as it required the SS option. The B22 door emblems weren't really a customer order item but rather were part of the Z15 SS Equipment option so they automatically came with the SS option and couldn't be ordered as such. Very few options were unique to the Z15 SS Equipment package. D88 stripes could be ordered on any Malibu convertible, coupe or pickup. ZL2 cowl induction hood was an SS only item and (according to my documetation) could only be ordered with the 454. I think the 15x7 rally wheels were SS option unique but 14x7 rally wheels (not the same design but those included with the HC option) were available to non-SS cars. Power disc brakes, any engine up to and including the LS3, any automatic, M20 (M22 was 454-only), F40 Special Front & Rear suspension, F41 with LS3 only, and I think certain tire sizes were reserved for El Camino and/or wagon use.

The list is pretty short for things you could not get without the SS option.
