Sorry if this is a dumb question. Should my '66 malibu have a rear sway bar? Was it an option or something? And if it is optional, does it really make a difference? Thanks. Ed.

As for making a difference, it really depends on the rest of the suspension setup... I think Global West recomends NOT using a rear bar with their "spherical" lower control arms...

But usually, they will probably help a bit...

As for being an option, I am not sure, but I have never seen an original 66 Chevelle equipped ith the rear swaybar, althouhg I have seen quite a few with factory rears bars but the cars had been modified quite a bit by the previous owners...

I think they first came on Buick or Olds A-bodies and not Chevelles until later...

I dont think there was any 66 Malibus that came with a rear sway bar. If your lower control arms are boxed and you have holes drilled thru them then you could put one on. Usually only the SS model with the 12 bolt had the sway bar. Yes I believe it was an option, but not until later in the 60's. You could always add one. I'm thinking about doing it to my 66 Malibu. But I'm not sure exactly how I'm going to set up my rear suspension yet.

I think they help a bunch. Measure the front bar and get one the next size smaller for the rear. If, as said above, the lower arms are boxed and drilled, just add one. If the arms are not boxed, Addco has a bar for you. It uses plates bolted to the arms, with spacers, and the bar attaches to them. I used one for many years and it works fine. The plates hang down and are visible if that is an issue for you.
