View Full Version : Great idea!
M.Maner Oct 9th, 09, 11:16 AM Bob,I really hope this forum catches on. I'm really interested in EFI but know very little about it. I have an LT1 that now sits in my 68 400 Firebird thats waiting for some attention and I bought a Megasquirt system and a few FI parts to try my hand at building a 3.0L Chevy 4 cylinder similar to the old Nova 4 cylinders for an economy DD. Hopefully some of the experienced guys can share a little of their knowledge.

Tom Mobley Oct 9th, 09, 11:21 AM Hi Mike
Our admin got this up pretty quick. I only asked last night.
I'm interested in the MS stuff too. Thought about doing a pictoral how-to starting at the board level but I'm too broke to buy all the stuff. I don't see any way to get this stuff up and running on a V-8 for less than about $1K with the pump and all.
Who is Bob in this case?
steve_sutherland Oct 9th, 09, 11:22 AM I think this will catch on, theres quite a few Chevelles kicking around with LS motors and other fuel injected monsters, so this seems like a great idea to me:thumbsup:
M.Maner Oct 9th, 09, 11:34 AM Tom,my mistake. I saw Bob Tiley as the Mod and thought perhaps it was his baby. Just glad to see it up and running. I doubt I will be able to add much but I am eager to learn anything I can.
Mike
Tom Mobley Oct 9th, 09, 11:56 AM Yeah, I figured that out eventually, Duuuhhhh, I'm really sharp today.
Anyway, Bob is actually the Mod.
There's a few guys on here with heavy experience, should be interesting.
Did you DIY your MS? buy it built? Which version do you have?
M.Maner Oct 9th, 09, 12:16 PM Tom,I have the MS II. I built the MegaStim and planned to use that as practice for building the MS II. I then came across a fellow that was moving to another FI system and he had an factory assembled MS II with a laptop with everything loaded in and it was an older model that still had a serial port for a good price. So I bought it, unfortunately the laptop turned out to be junk, the battery wouldn't hold a charge for even a few minutes. So I did what I typically do and got aggravated and pitched it. That's were my FI education stopped.LOL
Mike
Tom Mobley Oct 9th, 09, 1:11 PM Pitched the laptop? sounds reasonable to me. :)
I have a couple old junker laptops. Battery is no big deal, find them on ebay or use a power inverter in the car. I use the laptop as a DVD player for my son on trips so so I'm used to that inverter deal. They're old enough to have real serial ports too.
M.Maner Oct 9th, 09, 1:36 PM Tom,I do need to find one,but I've been so busy with other projects that it just seemed to fade from importance. Maybe the new forum will be inspiration enough to get started back.

no offense to the megasquirt guys but, why not use the factory lt1 computer? works great and the entire engine, computer, etc. can be bought dirt cheap and is super easy to swap. i converted my 89 silverado p/u from the tbi 350 (which got 15mpg hwy and 8-9 city) to an lt1 350 efi for next to nothing. at the same time i swapped out the factory o/d trans. in pickup for a th/350. its now getting around 20mpg without o/d on hwy. and around 16 mpg city. its getting 15.5 hwy. towing an open car trailer with my chevelle riding along.
Tom Mobley Oct 10th, 09, 5:19 PM can you plug into it and change stuff if another install isn't quite as happy as yours?

yes. 200 shot of dry n2o. new best today 6.32!
Bob Tiley Oct 11th, 09, 10:54 PM I think the forum will get traffic and I will learn some stuff along the way. The Chevelle is going to stay a carb for a while but I am planning an LS2 for my 69 Camaro project in the garage.
Doug F. Oct 12th, 09, 7:49 AM Even so that is STOUT. Sounds like it is more of a "street car"?

very streetable. although, i did uncap the headers to see if i'd see a gain over full 2.5 exh. and open cutouts. went from 6.46 to 6.32. 3620lb. raceweight. bolted the collectors back up and cruised home.
