: Rear Sway?
SDuster11 Feb 24th, 03, 4:06 PM I recently put on a BIG front swaybar from a 79 Trans Am (1 1/4) and loved the response in the amount of body roll I lossed. But now I am able to notice that the rear is showing significant body roll and I need to get a anti sway bar for that. I was able to find a used one off a Trans Am for the front but is there another car that I can use the bar off of that interchangeable? If so does anybody know what? Thanks
72SSAbody Feb 24th, 03, 4:36 PM The RPO F41 7/8" rear sway bar is still available new from GM.
I'll have to search for the part number, but you can get it shipped to your door for about $65, but keep in mind you will have to box your lower control arms to run the bar or your "C" channel arms will buckle.

dont you love these smilies? ;)
72SSAbody Feb 25th, 03, 2:08 PM Yep, 454 is right.

scooter67 Feb 25th, 03, 2:12 PM What do the later A body sway bars look like. The reason that I ask is that my car has a non-stock rear swaybar and I've always wondered what it came off of. graemlins/waving.gif graemlins/hurray.gif
I like these new graemlins...

they mount on the bottom of the arms therefore they are a little wider, but otherwize look the same. instead of being smashed flat verticaly they are smashed flat horizontally.
scooter67 Feb 25th, 03, 3:31 PM Mine mounts on the bottom of the LCAs, but is shaped differently. On the ends it bends back towards the front, bends slightly parallel to the rear end at a slight down angle and meets the other side at a slight point. I,ve always been curious where it came from.
BlueSS454 Feb 25th, 03, 10:50 PM I have one on a 1981 Olds 98 Regency that came off a 72 Monte Carlo, I'll take a picture of it in the AM and post it here.
harleighguy Feb 25th, 03, 10:53 PM Here's the current P/N on the GM rear sway bar;
P/N: 394926

Do they use the same mounting holes, or would you need to drill vertical holes?

drill use vertical holes through the arm. new ones come with a channel that fits up in the control arm like a "U" or you can weld spacers in there then box it. see if i have any pics.
MalibuDreamer Feb 26th, 03, 2:58 PM If 73-87 sway bars can be used on 64-72's, then why cant the 73-87 rear-ends be used? Just seems to me if the Lower control arms are the same, there wouldn't ba a problem (unless its the uppers that are different).
Not try to start anything - just wondering.

BlueSS454 Feb 26th, 03, 8:24 PM I know thata G body rear will bolt in. I put one under my other 70 to roll it around. I would not suggest it simply for the fact that G body rears are 7.5" and very weak. Some factory G bodies came with 8.5" rears such a all 442 G bodies as well as Grand Nationals. I suppose they will work out ok for a small block application.
I tried to put a 73-77 A body rear under a 70 one time and it simply would not fit for whatever reason. I think the lower mounts are in a different location on the rear itself.
Rock68SS Feb 26th, 03, 8:44 PM Here is a good place to puchase the sway bar.
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com The price was less than $68 delivered. graemlins/thumbsup.gif I had just purchased one from Modern Chevrolet for $73 not delivered. graemlins/sad.gif

You just answered a question that I asked under another topic just yesterday. I have a pair of lower arms and a sway bar that I took from a 75 Monte. I went ahead and installed poly bushings and completely boxed the arms. Went to bolt it up and it didn't fit!
I'm trying to salvage the arms. Thought I would install one of the standard bars to get around the issue. But it sounds like maybe I can use the Monte bar afterall. Did you just drill your holes in a different spot??? Slide the u-channel to a different location? I'm pretty committed since I welded these arms up. graemlins/sad.gif
Just want to figure out an inexpensive way to get a sway bar on the rear.
I am interested in pictures and/or measurements for what you did.
Also, thanks guys for the tip on getting a standard bar from gmpartsdirect. I've order late-model stuff from them and have been very pleased. Didn't know GM still made the rear sway bar!
THANKS!
Q-ship Mar 1st, 03, 2:54 AM The sway bar off a 78 - 87 a-body will not fit the 64 - 72 Chevelle it is narrower I believe, it mounts to the lower control arms same as our Chevelles but the bolt spacing is completely different. The mount style of the 73 - 77 A-body does mount from the bottom, there is something wrong with the bushing width of the lower arms as I recall.
SDuster11 Mar 2nd, 03, 7:31 PM So can a sway bar ever "wear out" like does the bar itself? Can the metal get used to the continued flexing that it starts to go soft so to speak? Just wandering.
FO_FDYFO Mar 3rd, 03, 12:58 PM sduster, you can not wear out a sway bar unless it gets so rusted that signifigant material lose occurs. or thr bar is flexed beyond its elastic limit, which by the way can not happen whil installed on a vehical. so, in a short answer, you can not wear out a sway bar.
i checked again, and the rear sway bar of a 73-87 sway bar does fit, dont make me take pictures! graemlins/clonk.gif just kidding :D
