I'm going to rebuild front end soon and contemplating front spring replacement. I don't know if it needs it though. What are the signs?

A sign of spring sag could be a drop in front end height. Probably not noticeable.

When you pull them to rebuild the front suspension, look them over.

Otherwise, clean them up, paint and reinstall.

doing that now since its all apart replace them they are to old to be guessing with i just got a new pair from e bay for my 70 chevelle 40 bucks the guy said the old springs will be soft so for 40 bucks and its nice and new looking you just cant go wrong. let me know if you want the link i think he sells for a automotive warehouse. storm
