: Anyone ever had kidney stones?? Oh, the pain...
BillsCamino Oct 6th, 09, 9:39 AM I've been battling a darn kidney stone off and on since last Friday. Emergency Room hospital visits Friday afternoon and at 4 AM Sunday morning.
Finally got to see a Urologist yesterday morning. Did another CAT scan to verify....a 7mm bundle of he!!.
Take pain med and drink lots of fluids...see me again in two weeks.
If it's still there he may have to take it out with a Lazer. :(
Ain't no lazer I've ever seen gonna fit up there.
And can't go to work under the influence of a prescription narcotic.
Just shoot me NOW...
1BLACKHARLEY Oct 6th, 09, 9:52 AM at 7mm, they might need to go get it. does he have you on apurenall yet? i had a 4mm last year, and they finally went after it, got up there and found after decades of riding, kick boxing, and all the other stupid crap i've done to myself, my ureatha had closed completely.
i went in for an out patient procedure and ended up spending two days in the hospital and waking with all kinds of stuff hangin out of a place you don't want stuff hangin out of, and had to have that stuff for a week.
look, i've felt your pain, on several occasions. funny when you walk into emergency, they don't even ask what's wrong, they see it on your face.
i'm not sure several weeks with a stone of that size, is o.k. when my doc found the 4mm, he scheduled for the next day. they do give you some incredible drugs for the pain.
PaPa Johns 77 Oct 6th, 09, 10:01 AM 3 times i went through that! One passed before they got me to the OR.
The other two they went up and crushed and let it pass!
I hope never to go through that ever again!!!
Drove all the way back from SoCal to IL. with a stone trying to pass!(first one)
MikeH Oct 6th, 09, 10:02 AM never had one but I had a friend that went through that last year. He finally passed it after a week of extreme pain. He was 2 days out of a 30 day stay in rehab for an addiction to pain killers so he went through it without so much as a tylenol. From what I saw, I hope I dont ever have one.
Georgia69 Oct 6th, 09, 10:02 AM My dad has had them off and on over the years, but he always manages to pass them without any type of procedure. I know they must be awful, because Dad rarely lets anything get him down. Don't know if it really works or not, but Dad drinks water by the gallon and takes long walks when he has one...hoping to jar it loose with the walking and flush it with the water.
Hope it passes soon. I know it's not funny but I can't help thinking of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer passed one in a public restroom.
gibbons Oct 6th, 09, 10:04 AM Oh yeah! I literally thought I was going to die that night. My son had had a dash of the flu the day before, so my wife thought that's what I had and I was just being a sissy.
My doctor called mine a stellar, he said it looked like a sand burr, about the size of a pea. My insurance company didn't want to pay to have it ultra-sonic blasted, they wanted the cheap way of going from the outside in with one of those claws like you use to pick up nuts and bolts in tight areas. I heard that was really invasive, so I battled the insurance company. The pain got less and less as I battled them, and by the time they approved the ultra, the stone had dissappeared!
Thinking back over my life, one time I had a whopper and then boarded a plane to California. The weirdest pain came over me, so quickly that i couldn't reach up for the call attendant button. I passed out from pain, an awoke when the landing gear was coming down, and I was completely fine. I think that was a stone. I periodically get those episodes, mostly when I get jarred around like trying flips on a wakeboard or skiing. Now I know that I'm not going to die, it's just a hassle I deal with. They go away when the stone passes.
kevin d Oct 6th, 09, 10:12 AM I had 2 bouts with them, the second involved a 4 day hospital visit with lots of morphine. I now drink PLENTY of water. FWIW, the head nurse told me she had given birth and had kidney stones. She said she would rather have a kid than a kidney stone.
BillsCamino Oct 6th, 09, 10:16 AM FWIW, the head nurse told me she had given birth and had kidney stones. She said she would rather have a kid than a kidney stone.
Funny...a nurse told me just about the same thing.
She's had two kids and one kidney stone. She said she's rather had both kids at the same time...and sideways...than that one kidney stone. :D
If 7mm hurts this much, I'm guessing that's way men don't give birth. ;)
Bunz-T Oct 6th, 09, 10:16 AM Only had one small one and it passed . The pain is immense.
Anybody have a clue what truly causes them. My doctor says I drink too much coffee and beer and not enough water, leading to dehydration. Stated that if your urine is darker than pale yellow you are just building another one.
dreis454 Oct 6th, 09, 10:23 AM Bill, get it taken care of sooner rather than later!
Last summer I had one that caused an infection because it wasn't treated correctly.
It ended up shutting down my kindneys & also causing the infection to go into my bloodstream (sepsis) which stopped my heart in the ER twice (7min & 12+ min)
I still have a heart condition from this a year later & can't work.
Good luck Bill.
BillsCamino Oct 6th, 09, 10:24 AM The Doc told me that here in the South, we live in the "Stone Belt".
All we tend to drink is either Coke, ice tea, or water which has a high mineral content.
He didn't mention beer. ;)
Actually, reading the brochure given me yesterday, there are a couple different types of stones.
The most common is made of Calcium which is diet based. But other types can be caused by a simple chemical imbalance of your body.
I'm supposed to try and "capture" mine if it passes so it can be tested for it's origin.
1badss396 Oct 6th, 09, 10:24 AM Bill I know exactly what you are going through and its no fun at all, the pain is the worst. I have had them 3 times and been to the hospital 3 times for them and had to pass them on my own at home and it sure as hell hurts.
Its been a long time since I had any now but if I was you I would start drinking lots of fresh home made lemon aid it works for me if you are getting the calcuim stones with the little spikes on them like a sand spur.
dyno jonn Oct 6th, 09, 10:50 AM Lemonaid has worked for me too. I had a bunch of stones back when I was drinking Pepsi by the case. Now I drink lemonaid instead and hope I never have another kidney stone.
dave_silva Oct 6th, 09, 10:58 AM I have had them and they suck, very painful.
ssal396 Oct 6th, 09, 11:18 AM My wife has had them in the past and she's got one right now as well... They have her on what I call a kidney stone cocktail, she's been drinking this stuff that's supposed to make them smaller but I don't know if it's working...
BB_Mike Oct 6th, 09, 11:23 AM Not me! I have only known people to get them I have a friend who seems to get one a year. He drinks a lot of sweet tea and eats a lot of salty foods (high in sodium like canned raviolies and chips, etc). I don't understand how water can cause them?!
Good luck, and be sure to save some of those pills for a rainy day when you tweak something working on the car.
kevin d Oct 6th, 09, 11:41 AM Mike,
water doesn't cause them but goes a long way towards keeping them away. By drinking water you flush the kidneys out, including the small particles that may gather.
My kidney stones were not diet related but caused by dehydration. I was exercising regularly and working outside at Lowe's part time. I accidently allowed my water consumption to drop (replace water with soda) which allowed the build up in the kidneys.
rocks66ss Oct 6th, 09, 11:45 AM I have had 3 bouts of kidney stones. The last one almost killed me.
I sent you a good story Bill by pm.
From what I gather there is basically two more common reasons for stones. One is calcium, a lot of people create there own stones by consuming lots of Tums, and Rolaids type of antacids. Your just pumping calcium into you body by the hand full.
Diet plays a big role, people who eat lots of red meat are more prone to have stones. Red meat causes uric acid in the blood which leads to kidney stones, and my doctor also said some people are just prone to have them regardless of diet. It's recommended to stay away from caffeinated drinks, but I can't give up my coffee.
Rocky
69SUPERSPORT396 Oct 6th, 09, 12:10 PM Went to the ER 2 weeks ago, found a 5mm kidney stone on it's way to my bladder. VERY PAINFUL to the point of making me nauseous! The nurse called it "the curse of god".
That was out of my right kidney. During a CAT scan, they found a 4mm stone sitting there in my left kidney.
animal69 Oct 6th, 09, 12:15 PM I thought that passing a kidney stone was the most pain a man could get until I had a putrified gall bladder in February. Kidney stone was a 10 on the pain scale but the gb went to 12!
Drink lots of water every day for the rest of your life to keep the minerals flushed out of your system. My doctor recommends 1 oz. for every lb. of body weight.
bcice Oct 6th, 09, 12:16 PM I have had them twice but managed to pass them. I know it is the wrong spot but my doctor prescribed a suppository that gave huge relief in about 20 minutes.
JYags Oct 6th, 09, 12:19 PM Anybody have a clue what truly causes them. My doctor says I drink too much coffee and beer and not enough water, leading to dehydration. Stated that if your urine is darker than pale yellow you are just building another one.
Uh boy. Never had one, but I'm going to get myself a big tall glass of water right now.

I passed one years ago and my mom said the same thing (I'm one of four by the way). Thought I could use this arguement to get some leverage on my wife bit it didn't work out so well as she had to go natural with both our kids because of all the hardware in her back.
I now drink plenty of water every day and spend a whole lot of time running to the bathroom but it certainly beats passing another stone.

Drinking lots of hard water can cause them though!
GTO68TX Oct 6th, 09, 1:39 PM Yep, I've had my share of them. One time I passed three stones at once, I affectionally named them George, Gerogia and Georgette. Another ocasion it required three surgeries to get one stone out.................I don't know how big it was but somebody did mention boulder.
Jerry Briggs Oct 6th, 09, 2:05 PM Only one answer Bill, Morphine! makes you relax so you can pass the stone. Have had plenty and don't wish them on anyone.
will02 Oct 6th, 09, 2:20 PM Bill, I tend to get them every month or two, pays to be paralized as far as the pain goes, but make me sick as a dog with a fever, no sleep and nasty back ache. Within seconds of the stone passing, I break into a huge sweat and fever breaks. I keep a huge bottle of pill form of morphine around just for this. Be glad you have never seen me with one, believe it or not, I've been told I get a little Grumpy!
Chicken Coupe Oct 6th, 09, 2:20 PM I'm supposed to try and "capture" mine if it passes so it can be tested for it's origin.
Whadda supposed to use to capture it/them , a coffee filter?
Oh, Bill...have you seen the brew cup?
my doctor prescribed a suppository that gave huge relief in about 20 minutes.
I don't think they're supposed to come out that end!
Sorry to make light of your situations but laughter can cure so many things, I thought I'd give it a try. :D
Good luck, been there, done that, not looking to do it again.
ebe326 Oct 6th, 09, 2:23 PM My wife gets them about every other year. Been that way for over 15 years now. Hers are caused by a genetic disorder called cystinuria. It's horrible having to see her go through it. The pain must be unimaginable. I'm lucky enough to have never had one. Morphine is the only thing that helps her during a bad attack. Her last one was 1 centimeter. Definitely get it taken care of.
Krister Oct 6th, 09, 2:40 PM First one was at 18, and then it seems like every ten years (I am over do). Passed them all. My urologist kept my record 10mm:yes:. Got it down pat, back pain, grab the strainer, and buckle over for a day or 2 - pee looks like apple cider.
Although the stone is rough, the pain is caused by the urine backing up into the kidney from the stone lodging anywhere between the kidney and bladder. Once in the bladder it bounces around knicking the bladder walls until you pass it. The urethra is like a 4 lane highway compared to the kidney to bladder tube.
My brother has had them too, but unable to pass them and went the ultrasonic way.
Bottom line - no fun!
1BLACKHARLEY Oct 6th, 09, 3:16 PM for you guys wondering about this, my doctor explained it to my wife. go grab a kitchen sponge, now, the sponge is your kidney, put a little rock made of razor blades on top, now imagine that little razor blade rock (they look like mini asteroids) making it's way threw that sponge.
not all stones have the same makeup, there are the ones that are a little more sandy and pass easier, but the uric calcium ones are fairly brutal.
drink lots of water, cranberry juice, lemonade, eat less red meat, find out what the water makeup in local to you, you may need to drink bottle or filtered water.
oh, and usually these things are accompanied with gout. it's just a picnic we all want to miss...
BLT4FN Oct 6th, 09, 3:56 PM Had them 3 x so far:(. Only once have I passed them the other times they have gone after them.
Had them blasted once and was told I would not remember anything but let me tell you...... or maybe I wont.
Hope all goes well soon.....
Bill like you the doctors around here call this the belt for stones as well.
Something to do with the water. Mine told me to just drink... does not matter what;), just keep drinking.
BillsCamino Oct 6th, 09, 4:25 PM my doctor prescribed a suppository that gave huge relief in about 20 minutes.

Elviss 1971 Oct 6th, 09, 5:21 PM I have had 4 total. One was about 14 years ago and it was bad but the three I have dealt with this summer where really tough. I would not wish the pain on anyone but my loving Ex-wife. :D

Where was your back pain? I have had pain in the right side of my back for about 2 weeks now. Kidney stones have crossed my mind as to why my back has been in pain.

If you feel like you have a basketball stuff in your back around your kidney area...That may be a dinky little stone causing your pain! While the whole time your thinking something may explode. Thats has been my experience.
Not fun!

when that back pain feels like somebody is opening you up with a box cutter, you got a stone....when you have to crawl to the car, that's a stone, when you have to pee, and nothing but pain is happening, that's a stone, when you can't walk up right, that's a stone. dude, when you have a stone, you'll know it.
i have a fairly good tolerance for pain, and this will drop you to a knee, if not both....
Krister Oct 6th, 09, 5:58 PM John,
Outer side and centered between the waist and armpit. On the first kidney stone I thought I had pulled a back muscle from weight lifting. After no comfort from stretching and now in the fetal position I went to Urgent Care where the Dr. on call gave me a strainer. About an hour later I passed 3 stones and what a relief. Urine will eventually look dark like fresh squeezed apple cider until you pass them all the way through. Drink plenty of cranberry juice.

KRISTER, three stones at once? you are the man... c.i.a. would want a guy like you. water boarding would be a vacation for for a guy with your tolerance. man, three stones, makes me shudder to think of it....
PCB67SS Oct 6th, 09, 6:48 PM Many....maybe 60 or so. I have had so many IVP's that I am now highly allergic to the dye. I have a stack of x-ray films almost 2 inches thick. They are extremely painful...Mine normally start out feeling like a pulled muscle, then feeling like someone punched me in the kidney multiple times. Then it intensifies to the point of chills, then fever with severe sweating, no sleep, not being able to get comfortable anywhere. Sometimes I would try soaking in a tub helps until I start sweating, then I would get out and walk around the house in a towel until I found a corner i could lean in, to try and sleep standing up. Eventually I would start vomiting and that usually caused them to move thru the ureters and into the bladder....The pain is instantly gone and then I could sleep. After waking, about the 1st or second time going to the bathroom it would pop out. That part is not painful. Watch out for infections....As previously mentioned they look like glass sand spurs....Its amazing something so small can be so painful.....Hope yours passes quickly.
If they have to remove them for you and they mention stints....Just run.....

AdamLym Oct 6th, 09, 11:09 PM Bill,
I had a kidney stone a couple of years ago. The pain was unbelievable. I tried to drink and sleep as much as possible. I've broken bones before and would chose that ANY day over a kidney stone.
Peeing through a strainer gets old fast doesn't it!
It's just a waiting game now. I really feel sorry for you, absolute misery.

pearl Oct 7th, 09, 6:11 AM Had it many times. They call me the stone factory. I have a heating pad that vibrates. When I feel one coming I get that pad out and put it on the back side that is killing me. Has saved me a few trips to the ER. Had them removed 4 times already
Finally Oct 7th, 09, 7:57 AM Bill,
Don't know if it was mentioned here but Toradol works wonders for the pain of a kidney stone and it's non-narcotic. I've had them quite a few times, most times they were to big to pass and forced the kidney to shutdown. As mentioned that's not good because the kidney will get infected and can be damaged. So back to Toradol, went into the ER, doubled over in pain, one shot of Toradol and pain gone. No buzz, no light headedness, just no pain. I mean zero pain, like there was nothing wrong at all. I've had it twice in the ER with the same results. It does come in pill form, not sure if it's as effective as the shot but you may want ask your Dr about it. Google it and read up on it first.
BillsCamino Oct 7th, 09, 9:08 AM Still holding on to this little bugger. Although it is on the move, I believe. The pain is lower now.
Actually got a decent night's sleep...only woke up about 6 times.
Not going to wait too much longer for this to pass...
I appreciate all the posts, PM's and phone calls! Misery loves company, I guess. :D

I hear ya Bill. Whe he first gave them to me I did not know they went back there and must have swallowed about 10 of them. When I went back the next day still in pain, I told him for all the good they did I might as well have just shoved them up my @$$. (I know, old joke but just trying to add a little humor)
I was in the clinic almost doubled over in pain when he said suppository and I remember being a little rude about the fact that this thing was trying to come out my dick, not my backside. He made some comment about a headache and do you put the asprin in your stomach or shove it in your ear. As those of you that have had a stone are aware, all you want is for the pain to go away and for the most part, they worked.
1badss396 Oct 7th, 09, 2:56 PM Bill I can hear you screaming all the way over here trying to pass that stonel:)l:) I bet your wife is saying to you now that is what its like giving birth:yes::yes:

X2 on the Toradol injection.....I had it last year at the ER...They had me lay down for about an hour afterwards....I feel asleep and woke up...and the pain was gone....I felt silly for being there, got up and left passed the stone the next day.
LKSV8 Oct 7th, 09, 3:38 PM Sorry to hear that bill, i dont want no kidney stones nor to give birth, just take it easy if thats possible. Take care man.

aukai Oct 9th, 09, 2:08 AM I feel for you. Never had a stone but have picked up several over the last 30 years. You can pick up on it immediately just by the persons distress, one or two questions and the diagnosis is made. Hope all is well so you can help when the new power plant arrives.

Bill, I feel your pain I had my 1st at age 21, then 2nd at age 25 progressively worse since then I am 34 now and I know for a fact that I have passed over 120 yes that is correct 120. I pass one about every week or two. The good news is that I pass them, I have had 3 lithotripsy surgeries and 1 basket. I am the worst case my urologist and the metabolist have seen. THe statement about the stent is true RUNNNNNNN. They are awful. IVP's had my fair share. ER knows me by first name. LOL Bought my urologist a new house. HA HA. These boogers hurt but I just have to bear it and have learned to cope with them. Good Luck and keep us posted!!!!
ohhawk Oct 9th, 09, 8:50 AM If your doctor hasn't prescribed some Flomax for this you should ask him about it. I've had them a couple times and last time after 10 days of agony he gave me some Flomax to try to "ease the flow".......within 48 hrs. I passed it.
BillsCamino Oct 9th, 09, 9:02 AM How's it going today, Bill??? Hopefully it has passed and you're feeling better...
Thanks for asking Dave.
Unfortunately, it has not yet passed. Drinking fluids including lemonade (which I hate) continously but no joy yet.
And yes, been on Flomax since Monday...taking one pill at bedtime.
If it doesn't happen soon, going to give in to Plan B and let the Doc blast this thing.
Really wearing me down...
Joe Y Oct 9th, 09, 9:26 AM Passed one when I was 17, then another a few years later while I was driving on the interstate. That was awesome!
77 cruiser Oct 9th, 09, 9:36 AM Hope you get that sucker out soon Bill!!
Wife had one, CAT scan showed 4x6. She endured it for a week then went to see a urologist yesterday.
They went in with a scope to get it but it was already gone, the doc was kinda surprised.
But he did say that where it had been there was some clotted blood & sludge(his terms) causing some blockage.
Sounds like the post op pain is a little tough but I think she'll make it, especially after 30 years with me.:D
aukai Oct 9th, 09, 5:59 PM When you get rid of it you'll be down to 200 lbs.:D
langss Oct 9th, 09, 7:10 PM One of my co-workers was out for about a week for a Kidney Stone. He gets them all the time from what he said.I guess this last one was fairly large and he was in serious pain. The Urologist gave him something for pain, but it was no help.Well to make a long story short someone suggested he drink a 2liter bottle of Coke over about a half hour.He did and the stone passed. He said once he started drinking the Coke the pain actually subsided somewhat. All I can say is he hates Coke,is a die hard Pepsi fan but keeps 2liter bottles in the refer.I have never had the problem and I drink Pepsi, but just in case, I have a 2liter bottle of Coke on hand.

Yeah, I know...next Friday morning heading for the NC show in Burlington...6 hrs + from here.
Been a strange day today...haven't had to take any pain med and only have a small backache on that (left) lower side.
Even crawled under the '67 dash this afternoon to install a new radio in the glovebox.
And attended a car show tonight...
Man Bill I hope it moves along for you soon...

Long long time ago about 200 years ago whenI was in my 20's I had a problem with uric crystals forming in my kidneys. I had just moved to AZ and was working out side when I was in college. So I go to the school clinic and complain it hurts when I pee'd. So off I go and get pencillin in the butt. Then I go back a week later complaining it still hurts and this time super duper pencillin in the butt. Finally the third trip back in, a DR takes urine sample and detects blood. They figured out I was so dehydrated
that I formed uric crystals in my kidneys so then I got the pain meds. Top it off I was on a losing streak then. Kept saying. I don't think it was that. Oh well. I lived.

davewho1 Jul 20th, 10, 11:37 PM Bill - whatever happened with this?
I was introduced to these lovely little jewels last night about 10 PM. The worst pain I've felt in my life other than a couple times I've tweaked my back. :(
I stuck it out 'til about 2:30 am and went to the ER. Thought I might be dying. Xrays, CAT scans, blood & urine tests - pretty much the whole 9. They finally gave me a shot of Dilaudid about 5 AM for the pain after I asked a couple times.
They gave me a scrip for pain pills and something to open up the passage, and a strainer. Finally got out of there about 7:30. That oughta be a nice little bill.
Still haven't passed it, but I feel better.
Not one of my better nights ... :p
BillsCamino Jul 21st, 10, 12:07 AM Dave,
OUCH !!!
I hope that thing passes quickly. Mine took a few days...not really sure exactly when but the pain was simply gone.
Good luck buddy!
Dakenzie1 Jul 21st, 10, 12:34 AM Hello, My name is Frankie; and I acknowledge that I have a problem with stones. It all started so innocently, a stone here, a stone there. And I felt I was in control. After three stones in four years, I quit cold turkey. I fought hard and stayed clean for five years, I thought I had beat my problem. But the stones were always there, following me. 2 weeks ago today I got stones again.
I went back in for a CT scan and there was the stone. Doc said Frankie I've got good news and I've got bad news. Good news is your stone is small and should pass soon. Bad news is you got 3 more in the kidney just hanging around.
I passed the first and now carry around Ketorolac 10MG tablets waiting for the others to ambush me. Also been drinking cranbury juice by the gallons.
As long as I'm not at the track when it hits I'll be happy. It's a great excuse for when my mother-in-law comes over to visit. Sorry, Ma, kidney stones hurting, I'd like to visit but I gotta go lay down. :D
davewho1 Jul 21st, 10, 12:37 AM Thanks, Bill - I hope so too. :) I take it you haven't had any since? Did you modify your diet any?
I forgot to mention my blood sugar was kind of high, too. Just as a bonus. :(

68KMENO Jul 21st, 10, 7:28 AM what I don't understand is why your doctor hasn't performed an ultra-sonic wave procedure to break up the stone !! its amounts to a one day stay & your home that night
ask about it ........ beats the hell out of day's/ weeks of pain !!!

They really don't want to do that unless the stone is too large to pass on it's own. It's a pretty simple procedure, had it done more times then I care to think of but your kidney does take a beating. If it's already on the move by the time they schedule you for the treatment it will probably have passed on it's own.
Scotch Jul 21st, 10, 11:28 AM I had my kidney stones broken up sonically twice so far. Doc says it'll be a regular deal for me once about every 8 years for the rest of my life. I get what's called a 'staghorn calculus' inside my kidney. It looks like a deer antler and really, really hurts. But, once they do the procedure, it passes with minimal issue and I'm good for another 8 years.
davewho1 Jul 21st, 10, 5:37 PM Another miserable night. I didn't go pick up my pain scrip yesterday cuz I didn't feel like going out in the heat. Big mistake. I do believe that was the longest night of my life. :(
I was gonna say I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, but if every member of Al-Qaeda and the Taliban got a stone in each kidney, I wouldn't shed any tears. :D
I'm gonna head out and get those meds - can't take another night like that. :noway:
rocks66ss Jul 21st, 10, 10:31 PM The sonic wave procedure is called Lithotripsy, and it failed to work on me. My stone was so large it tore a hole in my Ureter. They originally went in and was going to break it up with a laser, and when they put water to it before they hit it with the laser, they shoved it back up into my Kidney, and they had to put a stint in me.
Lets just say the procedure to remove the stint was extra special. They use a scope that has a claw on one end, that works just like the grabber in your tool box.
They go in through Mr Happy and find the end of it in your bladder, they grab it and yank it out.
The put the stint in while I was under general anesthesia. I told my wife if they ever put me under for a stone again I dont care how much surgery it takes to remove the stone, but they will never put another stint in me.
This was the third time I had Kidney stones, and it about killed me.

 Ouch! I guess I'll quit crying now ... :(
Scotch Jul 22nd, 10, 10:38 AM Ya- My Dr. said if the lithotripsy didn't work, we had 2 options left. 1 was the stent procedure outlined above, where they'd then go up the unit, through the bladder, and into the tube connecting the bladder to the kidney and attack the stone that way. The other was surgery- cut open my back and get them out of my kidney that way.
I listened to all of this, and said I'd opt for the surgery. Dr. said the stent route would leave no scars. I responded by saying I'd rather have scars you can see on my back than go through the procedure you just described. No question.
Fortunately the lithotripsy worked for me. I still have a few 3-4mm stones I saved that made my eyebrows go up as they passed.
The pain of a passing stone is pretty incredible though. I was driving on the 405 fwy in SoCal when one decided to pass once. I had to pull over...it was intense. I was almost scared to start driving again once the pain subsided a little. I was worried it'd come back and I'd lose control of the car.
But, we all have our issues to deal with, and this is one of mine. Peeing a lot of blood after the lithotripsy was pretty bizarre too, but compared to the pain, I'd deal with it.

Going into Mayo in Rochester between Christmas and new years for surgery through the back. They say it probably will take 2-4 separate surgeries. Dr said I would feel like somebody beat me almost to death with a baseball bat for at least 2 weeks after. Looking forward to that compared to how I feel now! Pain laughs at morphine, driving is the worst, trying not to do anymore than I have to. Yep,
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, it will dissolve the stones, clean your system, spleen, kidneys, blood etc. Amazing stuff, greeks been doing this for thousands of yrs. Gets rid of toxins in your system youll feel better overall.
This stuff works, if youre prone to stones spend a few bucks and make your life easier.

About an ounce mixed with a glass of water or straight if you can hack it, chaser of your choice. (daily)

it is! Well, the Blue Label anyway. That stuff is so good, you wouldn't want to mess it up with anything. Red Label is okay to mix with. I like Black Label too, but I have mixed it before.

Finaly up enough to go online, had the surgery last Tuesday the 28th. The head kidney stone doctor at Mayo clinic had never seen anything quite like it. The six stones ended up being one HUGE mass as big as her hand. The "6" stones were the ends of it with the pieces all tucked up inside the pockets of my left kidney with the 22mm one heading down the Ureter. Got the whole thing in two surgeries, of course one lung collapsed and filled with fluid from the kidney. Came home Saturday with a huge tube sticking out my back, get to go back up Thursday to pull it out. Did send me home with a real good assortment of medications!:thumbsup:Think I will take a nap soon:boring:!

Scotch Jan 4th, 11, 10:44 AM I see the Doc on Friday (1/7). I should be getting my appt. date for the lithotripsy then or soon after.
I've been able to avoid the knife so far...let's see how long we can keep that up!
After this treatment, I should be good for another 5-6 yrs.
Scotch Jan 15th, 11, 12:43 PM Well- the Doc says my latest/greatest stone is too big for lithotripsy treatment (more than 5 cm long/3.5 cm wide).
I'm scheduled for surgery to remove it on the 24th. Fun!
BillsCamino Jan 15th, 11, 12:56 PM Wow...very sorry to hear about this Scott. I wish you a speedy recovery.
I guess we need to start a Get Well thread here on TC. I go in for shoulder surgery on Tuesday morning. But if I had to make a choice, I think I'd take my pending procedure over yours. Kidney stones are THE worst.
Sucks getting old...

YankeeRodder Jan 15th, 11, 2:09 PM Oh ya Bill, I went 3 days rolling around groaning, passed mine at home because of my crappy insurance. $380 a month for my wife and I, and I also have to spend $7500 a year before they co-pay. That's a pain no one knows until they have one, the kidney stone that is!
We are all just a serious sickness away from becoming homeless. with sneaky clause insurance or no insurance at all and you will have to sell everything you own to try to save a loved one, while the insurance companies get fatter and fatter from all the fleecing.
BillsCamino Jan 15th, 11, 2:26 PM Oh, I agree Dave.
And they all want their money up front!! Being a new year, I start a new benefit year and having to meet it's deductable.
The hospital called yesterday...my cost for the surgery is over $1800 and she asks "How would you like to pay for this?".
WTH? I haven't had it done yet!
She was very willing to take my debit card number over the phone. :(
My portion of the MRI cost me $353...the initial Ortho exam and X-rays was $212 plus another $14 for a sling.
Pain med script was $30 which I admit is money well spent. ;)
And I haven't even heard from the Surgeon office on that cost...

Not sure what the plan is yet, Kidney Stone specialist is haveing a baby as I am typeing, hopefully things will wait as I hate going through the process of a new doctor while in the middle of something like this. davewho1 Jun 14th, 11, 12:19 AM Sorry to hear it. :( I pray mine were a one-time thing.
Scotch Jun 14th, 11, 10:37 AM Rarely ever a one-time thing Dave. Sorry to say that but after dealing with mine for the last 15 yrs I feel qualified to share advice.
I had my last batch surgically removed and am all better once again. Doc says I 'simply' dont stay hydrated enough, and the minerals in my bodily fluids get left behind when my kidneys go dry. So I need to stay hydrated all the time and keep the minerals in suspension and allow them to pass.
After my operation they gave me a 24 hr urine collection test to see how things were going. That was a lot of fun (!) - peeing into a collection bottle and then carrying it into the hospital lab the next morning. They sent it off to another lab (in Texas?) to analyze, and the results were normal except for one thing- the overall quantity. I contributed a little over a liter, and apparently that's nowhere near enough. The Dr. said I could/should have double that much in 24 hrs. I don't think I pee that much unless I'm partying hard...and I don't do that too much anymore. But, since the Doc says to drink more water, I've been drinking more water. Hopefully it'll help.
They said my kidney is really getting beat up from all these stones over all these years. He said there's a measurement they take- basically the thickness of the kidney walls- that determines the health of the kidney. Mine is in pretty bad shape and he said if I don't change my ways, I might lose it in a few more years.
So, I informed all my family members- if any of you need a kidney, I'll donate one. But you're getting the beat up one.
Even with my 'good' insurance, it still cost me about $4,000 for this treatment. The Doc said they weren't able to get 100 percent of the stone, so I'll have to go back for another lithotripsy to break up the remaining deposits. We might wait a year for everything to heal up from the surgery before doing that, however. Doc says my cut up kidney needs time to heal and my wife says our savings account does too.
Until then....I'll be drinking more water and hoping this doesn't remain an issue. I've started focusing on eating better, and I also quit smoking after 26 yrs. I'm trying to get/stay healthy. We'll see how that pans out.
davewho1 Jun 15th, 11, 6:41 AM Scott - I hope you are wrong about this repeating, guess we'll see. At least if it happens again, I will know what is going on. I didn't know if I was having a heart attack, or what. :noway:
If and when it happens again, I will go to a walk-in clinic instead of the ER. I have neither insurance nor money, so I can't be going to the ER again.
It sounds like you are taking better care of yourself, that is always a plus.
Congratulations on quitting smoking, I am well-versed in nicotine addiction.
Scotch Jun 15th, 11, 11:29 AM Thanks Dave- and good luck to you too.
The way my Dr. put it - If you got stones once, and you don't change anything, you'll get them again. Made sense to me.
I tried a lot of different things to quit smoking, and none of them worked until I took Chantix. They tell you how you can keep smoking when you start taking it, so I was on board. It's cool how it works...you just stop wanting them. Then you stop taking the Chantix, and suddenly you're a non-smoker. I'm still impressed at how effective and effortless it was.
The money we're saving is impressive. We both smoked around a pack a day. At 5 bucks a pack, that's $150 a month. Between my wife and I, that's $300 per month we have now that we didn't have before.
