swapped pwgld for muncie and lakewood bellhousing...now can't get stock 64 starter past block/frame/headers and into bellhousing starter hole. I was recommended to try a 57 chevy starter as it's shorter and should fit. any thoughts on that? Thanks!!

When I added the Lakewood Bellhousing, I used an early Cast Iron Starter Nose. To install the stock starter I had to loosen the right hand (Passenger Side) Motor Mount and lift the motor. I also had to loosen the passenger header. Then to add insult to injury, the starter would not go flush into the hole. There were a few casting marks on the cast iron nose that had to be ground smooth. Once the casting was cleaned up, the starter bolted right into place. It is not easy, but not impossible.

Would a mini starter work easier? I ask because my Son is about make the same Lakewood install with a 4 spd.

A Mini Starter would solve the tight fit problem for sure. I think it is money well spent. I was just anxious to get my 64 running again and used what I had on hand. When the starter needs to be replaced, I will go with a mini starter.

the 57' starter slid in easily...the nose cone was smaller...the rest is the same except the 64 bolts were too long (5")...got 2 grade 8 bolts at 3.5" and all is attached. Now must get er' off blocks onto ground and see if it actually turns over and works...will update after the weekend! Thanks!
