: C4 Corvette rotors and hubs on tall spindles
1968SS Jan 6th, 05, 1:35 PM Has anyone used C4 calipers and 13" rotors with B body spindles on an A body? Specifically I have a 68 Chevelle and want to do the tall spindle conversion. I cannot use C5 rotors and calipers due to the wheels I have (17" American Eagle 211's). C4 rotors are thinner and are offset farther from the hub face, thus allowing more clearance for certain wheels.
Cheers
Steve
1968SS Jan 6th, 05, 1:50 PM Oops, I meant C4 Corvette rotors and calipers (not hubs) graemlins/clonk.gif graemlins/clonk.gif graemlins/clonk.gif
sinned Jan 6th, 05, 2:05 PM Yes, it has been done many times succesfully. Check David's page (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/David_Pozzi/12_corvette_brakes_on_fgen.htm) for details, you may to do some looking around his site for all the details. He has a TON of info that can applied to A bodies.

I have searched this forum and the pro-touring forum and I can't seem to find any information on this specific swap. All kinds of information on using stock spindles and C4 calipers/rotors, C5 rotors/calipers,and even C4 rotors and C5 calipers. If its there, I must be missing it! I see that you used C5 rotors and calipers with tall spindles and a turned down rotor/hub. unfortunately this won't fit my wheels. I would think that I could do the same thing but would need a bracket specific to that swap but I hate to reinvent the wheel if someone else has done it. Actually I think I could use a C4 rotor and a C5 caliper but the caliper would have be offset farther from the hub face. This is what Speedtech and Touring classics call a hybrid kit using turned down stock drum brake hubs and stock spindles.
'540 Chevell Jan 6th, 05, 3:36 PM Hey look at this brake swap.

I'm sure that you can use your wheels with this one.
Corvette rotor suburban caliper. Wilwood as an aluminum
caliper that will fit this.
store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=esearch.asp&N=110&Ntk=KeywordSearch&Ntt=wil-120-5289&x=15&y=10
About 98 each .
I am collecting parts now for this convertion
Hope this helps.

sinned Jan 6th, 05, 4:45 PM Tell me you clicked the highlighted link above that shows as "Davids page". As soon as the window opens it has 12" Corvette swap in bold print and lists below that the 13" rotors will work as well.

Dennis,
I think David's website is for the stock A-body spindle (and first gen. f-body).
Steve is looking for a bracket that fits the tall spindle. I don't know anyone that currently makes the bracket except for Baer.
If I got off my duff I could do it, but there just isn't a lot of demand for the swap.
Joe
sinned Jan 6th, 05, 6:59 PM I knew he would have to build his own bracket, David's site is just the only one of that details what is needed to get going.
1968SS Jan 6th, 05, 8:17 PM Thanks Guys
I suspected that I would have to engineer my own bracket but it was worth a shot. I could roll over and buy the Baer 13" track kit (which is basically what I am trying to do) except for the fact that I can probably do the front and back brakes for what the Baer front kit costs!
Cheers

'540 Chevell Jan 7th, 05, 1:38 AM Steve look at these rotors BruteStop Drilled and sloted.
www.raybestos.com/usa/rotors.htm (http://www.raybestos.com/usa/rotors.htm)
Rock auto has them for $51.00 each they are 12" 1 1/4 thick
The Wilwood calipers are $98.00 each and weigh 3Lbs
I just got the tall spindals and dust shields for $14.00 each
camaro rotors for hubs $14.00 each less than $400.00 bucks
and they are going to work as good and look more custom
I think than a C4 caliper & rotor.
But here is what sold me I can keep my 15" welds.
Looking at some tubular a-arms from AFCO racing
hope I can use them $49.00 each
All I can say is thanks to that Idiot I will have one incredible
Braking system.
R,J and Joe Thanks for taking time to get this info to us,
'540 Chevell Jan 7th, 05, 1:45 AM R.J Do you know how much the JD7 caliper weight is?
Thanks
airrj Jan 7th, 05, 10:58 AM '540
No. I will see if I wrote it down at home. But I don't think I checked it. BTW what are you planning for rear brakes?
1968SS Jan 8th, 05, 9:59 AM '540
which wilwood calipers did you use?
Bunky Jan 8th, 05, 6:02 PM Steve,
I just picked up a set of brackets for the C5 caliper/rotor swap on tall spindles. I haven't assembled it yet, and have yet to order wheels. The brackets were delivered today and look real nice. See this link for details.

1BadBu Jan 9th, 05, 3:11 PM I've spent the whole weekend following this thread and a similar one regarding C5 brake kits. First of all, a salute to you guys that have figured this stuff out. Amazing.
I really like the Speed Tech Performance kit. It allows you to use the stock spindle. Their website is well laid out and includes all the various options and part numbers. Very detailed. Being an ex-partsman, I like having the part number when I go to buy parts.
A real quick check online at Kragen shows a pair of Raybestos C4 Brutestop rotors (the crossdrilled ones) go for $220 and the C5 calipers from Raybestos w/ceramic pads would be $236 for a pair.
That's about $450-n-change for the calipers, pads and rotors. No price for the bracket at STP. Use lowering springs instead of drop spindles and you're there for less than $600. That's pretty far from the $995 they want at Performance Online and REAL FAR from BAER or SSBC.
What's cool about the C4/C5 combo is, it clears 17's. STP mentions TT II's specifically. (Hmmm, wonder why?).
There are many options for tall spindles and parts from the pick-n-pull that could save you even more. Thank you to all those who spent the time trudging around junk yards and trial fitting combinations. You've saved me time and money. (Although I did get a headache trying to follow all the C4's & 5's, F, B & A-bodies, 2nd Gen and 3rd gen. Not to mention metric banjo bolts and wheel studs...)
FIG Jan 10th, 05, 11:16 AM Hey RJ what brand rotors did you use for yours? I am looking up rotors for a 68-82 vette and it comes up with a 5500 part number not 5544 that you have listed....
airrj Jan 10th, 05, 1:36 PM I got them here. http://discbrakesrus.com/make/chevrolet/1965-1982corvette.htm
Looks like $58.25 each.
