i was lookin up to upgrading my steering box in my 72..i also need a new pitman arm.. i saw in the tech reference that the 92-98 jeep cherokee is interchangable. is this a true direct bolt in ? or is there any mods i gotta make to make it work? also is there anything i gotta do with the power steering pump itself or will the stock pump work ok .. thx for any info

The line fittings are different (metric) so not a direct bolt-in, but you can do it. Worst case you can get some lines made up at a hydraulics place with whatever fittings you need on them.

The same is going to be true for any box after....'83 I think??

Do a little searching, this has been discussed pretty thoroughly. In fact, I just did all the research last week when I put a new box in my '92 Caprice. I didn't have the line fitting issue though. I ended up using a 1996 Caprice 9C1 with FE3 handling package box on my '92 car. $177.99 plus core at Autozone, works great!

GM changed to Metric threads starting with the 1980 model year. Your Chevelle has a Saginaw 800 box as used on many GM and AMC products since 1964. A very popular swap is using a fast ratio box from a 77-81 Trans Am of Z28. You can also use the 82-92 F body, G body boxes as well.
A Jeep box wont be as fast a ratio.
You must also be aware that the internal stops can vary, so it might affect your turning radius.

Nick,

Follow Jim Shea's paper on the Jeep box in the tech ref area. He has covered all of the areas of concern. The Jeep box is 12.7:1 ratio just like all of the other fast ratio boxes. The F-body boxes have internal stops and require higher effort at the steering wheel. If you have any other questions Jim is a great resource to have around here. graemlins/hurray.gif
