: Plastic inner fenders on 69 Chevelle
Scottie43 Oct 3rd, 09, 12:30 AM Has anyone purchased/installed Goodmark plastic inner fenders recently? The photos on their website look to be the same as the originals. I bought a set (not Goodmark) locally today, got them home and they are not even close so they will be going back. How about Goodmark steel inners? My car originally had plastic so that's what i thought I'd put back in. The originals are beyond repair! Everything I've read here so far on inner fenders is I better plan on a long day to get them installed!!
fishhead Oct 3rd, 09, 12:55 AM I bought metal. Didnt want the plastic. I also painted mine...
It didnt take but an hour or two to get them in...
post a pic of the ones you bought...are you sure they are the wrong ones?

I got the metal ones from Ground Up
fit perfectly
go with metal. You'll thank us later.
Randy
Definitely go with metal. They fit, they last and don't crack. If installing them with the fenders on, put a plastic trash bag over them to avoid scratches until in place, then remove plastic and fasten.

Alan F Oct 3rd, 09, 9:42 AM I also want to use plastic inner fenders on my '69. I guess I'm going to be a glutton for punishment as I'm going to try them anyway.
Here's a thread from the last time I inquired: http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=231443&highlight=plastic
I had settled on buying the ones sold by The Parts Place as I understood that they manufactured their own (which I don't know to be true). I will check on the ones from Goodmark when I get ready. Still about 2-3 months before I'll be ready for them.
I will post my results when I get them.
Scottie43 Oct 9th, 09, 9:54 PM I ordered Goodmark plastic fenders through Summit. They arrived today and only took 4 days to get here. Price on the set was $199 and only $20 shipping. I compared them side by side to my old originals and they appear to be exact! They are made of the same abs plastic as well. So far I am pleased. I will update once I have them installed.
Alan F Oct 10th, 09, 1:54 PM Scottie: I, for one, am interested in your success with these. Please make sure to update us on how well they install.
Also, since your car originally had plastic inner fenders, you probably have the old hardware. But if you are not aware, the hardware is different between metal and plastic inner fenders. Plastic inners use part number 3958325 (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1486306&postcount=17) (Group 8.155).
I put together this comparison for my own use (photos clipped from AMK's website). The bushing idea on the bottom came from me and was based on Bob Inhoff's (robinls5) statements (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showpost.php?p=920377&postcount=11) in other threads that the correct hardware would allow the inner fender to float rather than be pinched against the firewall mounts.
However I did a search here and could not find any pictures for that hardware and nothing in my literature would illustrate it. Perhaps someone else has more.
Scottie43 Oct 10th, 09, 7:52 PM Alan, I pulled out all my original mounting hardware and the firewall washers look like your plastic washer in your 3rd pic but are metal. The washers I received in my AMK kit are like the second washer. I will be sandblasting and restoring my original washers with the built in spacer to use rather then the AMK stuff. I hope to get one installed on Sunday. I will keep you updated. Thanks for your info. It made me go search for the original mounting hardware.
Alan F Oct 10th, 09, 8:12 PM Before you install it, could you take and post a picture of the washer and give some dimensions on it? Thanks and good luck.
Big White Oct 10th, 09, 8:17 PM My Elky is a Baltimore car and it seems as though Baltimore used nothing but plastic liners. I bought my replacements from The Parts Place. They manufacture their own and I have the impression that they sell to other parts houses.
Aside from the "Made In Canada" lettering missing, they were appearance wise, identical to my originals. I did have some issues of fit around the fender wells, (original fenders, not repros) even though they claim a perfect fit. But then, how many reproduction items are a perfect fit.
You'll hear a lot of pros and cons, steel versus plastic, but the bottom line is what you prefer to use. The arguments against both hold little water. With today's restored cars getting limited usage and garage storage as compared to daily drivers back in the day, I doubt seriously if the argument that the metal versions will rust or the plastic versions will crack has any merit. Either version should be more than serviceable for many years to come.
1badss396 Oct 11th, 09, 12:36 AM I am glad my 69 Baltimore car had the metal ones.
My 69 is a 2nd week of July build.
Keith Tedford Oct 11th, 09, 6:39 AM Sounds like Baltimore used both types. Our one car was an early February build. The other was last week of July. Both had plastic inners. Both cracked around bolt holes. Someone must be making good plastic inners now. The ones I saw a few years ago were pretty bad and apparently didn't fit well at all.
My 07C Baltimore SS had plastics. They were cracked around the bolt holes, etc. I put new Goodmark metal ones on it. I hope they've finally got some nice plastic ones available for those that want them.
Keith Tedford Oct 11th, 09, 9:56 AM I guess they can't be accurate and put the "Made in Canada" on the plastic inners if they aren't being made here. Too bad, because the marking is so obvious.
BillsCamino Oct 11th, 09, 10:08 AM My 12D Atlanta '69 SS has plastic inners...both sides.
Dean Oct 11th, 09, 10:32 AM My 12D Atlanta '69 SS has plastic inners...both sides.
Same with my Kansas City 69 and I replaced them with steel from the salvage yard for $50.00.
All the bolts holes busted out before I realized I had the impact set to tighten :o
Scottie43 Oct 11th, 09, 8:22 PM I got the passanger side installed today. All went very well, all the holes lined up with the exception of one on the outer side of the fender, but I should be able to get it lined up with a dremel tool. Just a note for anyone using the AMK bolt kits as I have been. The bolt kit that comes with AMK kit is for steel inners and the bolts are shorter. I had to use many of my longer original bolts as the plastic is much thicker. Attached are photos of the special washers for the plastic fenders and a couple with the inner fender installed.
Alan F Oct 12th, 09, 8:14 AM Thanks for the pics and feedback!
Those look a litle different than what I imagined. I am surprised at the way it chamfers instead of blocks in to the inner fender. You would think the chamfer would spread a load on to the plastic.
GenPac Oct 13th, 09, 12:02 PM Hey Scottie, how's the fitment on the lip on the fender? I have plastics, originals were metal (IIRC) but the fitment around the wheel well really really stinks...
Scottie43 Oct 13th, 09, 10:44 PM I will post pics this weekend. I think the fitment around the fender edge is almost perfect. Like I said, one hole is off and will have to be dremeled to fit, but should be covered by the bolt head.
Scottie43 Oct 28th, 09, 8:58 PM Here are some updated photos on my plastic inner fenders. After fine tuning I got the passenger side to fit well with very little adjusting of the holes. I had to dremel out one. Overall I think it looks very close to the original I took out. Starting most of the bolts then making the necessary adjustment seemed to work fine. I was very carefil when tightend each bolt, just "snugged" them. No cracks!!
Alan F Oct 29th, 09, 8:03 AM Thanks for the followup Scottie!
Were you using OE or repro front fenders? My fear is to get a slightly mis-aligned bolt hole that causes the inner to become distorted and ultimately break or tear.
Scottie43 Oct 29th, 09, 8:55 AM The only repop fender is the passanger side, which was my worry also. It fit fine, far better then expected. Everything I read said stay away from plastic fenders as they never fit, but I've always heard nothing but good about Goodmark, so I took the chance. Now I hope the drivers side fits as well. That fender is original.
JpMotorsports Oct 29th, 09, 10:22 AM My Atlanta built 69 also has plastic inner fenders as well
rbarnes Oct 29th, 09, 10:50 AM My Kan 69 came with plastic. I replaced with steel. I still have plastics, they are bad shape I just hate to toss them. The splash shields are stapled from the outside in.
Dan Orgill Oct 29th, 09, 12:49 PM My '69 Fremont car came with plastic inners.
Chevelle_Nut Oct 29th, 09, 1:13 PM My 72 Baltimore and 72 Van Nuys cars had and have plastic ones.
Chris R Oct 29th, 09, 4:49 PM My 69 Freemont car also has both plastic inners.
