Hi Guys,
I'm rather new to Chevelles, and have noticed that 70-72 cars seem to use both plastic and metal inner fenders. It appears as though many of the SS big-block cars have metal while the plain-jane cars have plastic. A friend and I recently looked at an alleged 1970 LS5 which had plastic inner fenders. Upon checking the numbers, it turned out to be a clone. So what is the deal on this?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

I read some time ago that the Chevelles that were put together in Canada had the plastic inner fenders, while the US ones had steel. I could be wrong, but mine was built north of the border and had plastic. It was not a true SS, though. I just replaces mine with new steel, because the plastic had shrunk and cracked/separated from almost all of the attachment bolts. Hope this helps.

The type of inner fenmder is not significant. They were interchangeable at the factory. It just depended on which type was in stock that day. Someone even posted that his vehicle had one of each-new from the factory.

I have a '72 that was built in Baltimore w/ plastic inners. It was just what they had when your car was built.

My '71 was built in Van Nuyes, CA., and originally came with plastic. I replaced with metal upon discovery that there was no rhyme or reason.

My 70 was built in Arlington and came with plastic inner fenders. I ordered it new in May of 70 so I'm the original owner. When I replaced them in 1982 because of cracking, the new ones, from the Chevy dealer were metal. As has been stated, there doesn't seem to be any "set" pattern as to which ones were used when the car was built.
