Just wanted to know why Chevy came up with "300" on the chevelle's?
Is there a meaning behind 300.

thanks Anthony

Well Anthony, that is the IQ of anyone that currently owns one

I certainly have no idea to be honest. Maybe some kind of carryover from the Tri-Five Chevys that had 150 and 210 models I think

Trends and fashions. For a while in the fifties and sixties, numbers/letters were a big part of car names (tri fives as mentioned, Chrysler letter series, Ford 500). Then everything had names and multiple names in the late seventies and eighties (i.e Cutlass Calais, Cutlass Salon, Cutlass Supreme, Toronado Trofeo, Chevelle Malibu Classic). Now numbers/letter seem to be back (Caddy and Lincoln models, Lexus, Pontiac). Back then, a way to differentiate models/price relationships. Today? Probably to have non-offensive world car names.

Just a guess maybe, But I think its got to do with being a post style body and not a hard top.

Earlier years like the tri-fives had the 150 and 210, maybe this is just the natural progression?

Sounds reasonable to me.

Chevy back in the 1960s made a Chevy II 100, Chevelle 300 & 300 Deluxe, Chevy II 300 (discontinued when the Chevelle came out), Corvair 500, Corvair 700. That numbering scheme seemed to have been applied to the more basic series of cars. It may have stemmed originally from the model numbers but not for long. I'm sure the marketing department had their reasons for naming the series with numbers.

Dean, that red '69 300 Deluxe is really sharp & unusual.

I'm guessing it had to do with the second number in Chevelle VIN's, 3. The first number, 1, meant Chevrolet. The second number was the series, 3 was Chevelle.

In `69 you could also get the SS396 package on the 300 Deluxe as shown in my previous post. The car looked like a regular SS396 on the outside but was all 300 Deluxe inside except for the SS396 piece above the glove box and the steering wheel emblem.

Lol!

I read in a post here somewhere...that the '300 deluxe' was another kind of trim option. Reverse lights inside the brake lights, stuff like that, not too sure on the specifics.

Well, it certainly isn't miles per gallon or miles per hour... IQ, maybe. ;) Maybe it was the number of jealous Ford guys /mile?

Who knows how marketing people come up with stuff. Someone thought furniture commercials that yell at you and Sham-wow info-mercials were a good idea. :clonk: In that light, 300 is an awesome model name.

While we're here - does "Tri-5" mean the three years '55 '56 '57 of that body style Chevy? I can never find a source for what Tri-5 means...

I dont really care how it came about. I do know though that my "300" is just as cool as many SS cars, but at half the price to buy. (Nothing against SS cars at all)

The biggest issue I've noticed with our 300 cars...where the heck can you get the '300' emblem if you need them :(

Some numbers roll off the toungue better then others. 300 could be a marketing thing.
