I'm going to be doing the same thing soon. I bought SPI epoxy primer to spray on to keep it from rusting while I'm doing all the work. SPI says two wet coats 30 minutes apart. They also recommend a water based wax and grease remover before the epoxy.
I used SPI epoxy primer on my Malibu after stripping to bare metal and highly recommend it. Great stuff and reasonably priced. Free shipping too. I used the SPI solvent based wax and grease remover and it worked fine. SPI also recommends sanding bare metal with 80 grit to provide texture for the primer to grip. I used "clean & strip" discs and that provided enough "tooth". You can apply filler on top of epoxy primer too, so once it's on it can stay.

What kind of breathing protection do you need in working with this epoxy primer? I know that in working with urethanes that you need external air and you need to have all your skin covered.
I'm replacing many panels on my sprint, and want to protect them as they're done before painting. My car is outside all the time, as I have no room in my garage (too much stuff).

Another vote for SPI epoxy here. Really good stuff. The MSDS calls for supplied air put i just used a regular 3m paint resporator. that may just to cover there butts.

SPI makes a great product. As long as you use a catalyzed epoxy it will protect the metal from moisture and you can also do your body work right over the top of the epoxy. Make sure you use a respirator, that stuffs nasty.
