67 Chevelle 12 bolt Torque Thrust II's and 295 50R15 tires. What is the backspacing that I need, to keep these from rubbing, with a stock suspension? I have tried searching around here but the more information I put into my search the more BS I get, LOL> I was reading that it should be 4.75"?

What is the difference btw a 67 and 68 12 bolt? Is the 68 1" wider?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

What width wheel? Have you looked at the Wheel & Tire Database?

A 295/50-15 is going to be very tight on a 67 Chevelle.
Using a 15X8 you will need 4.50 backspacing.

I would be using an 8" wheel. The database only had two entries and only one listed the backspace. From what I was reading I kept seeing 4.75" but wanted that number confirmed. Does the 4.5 give enough room at the quarter lip?

If it's the traditional Torque Thrust D wheel, you can't get a 4.50 or 4.750 basck space. Hope I'm wrong, but that's what I found out.

You will have to roll the fender lips and the lower portion of the shock will be very close to the inside wheel lip. I ran stock Chevy Rally wheels with one inch extra back space and they barely fit my 67. I went and measured my wheels for you and they look to be 4.25" on back spacing. I think you can go to 4.5" before you will hit the shock. The exhaust pipe would rub on my car in a hard turn. I ended changing to 275/60's and was happier with the fit and look. Here is a pic of mine with 295/50's on the rear and 245/60's on the front. Good Luck

A 9.5" wide wheel will fit with 5.25" of backspacing and you should be able to use a 295 series tire.

You can run a 15x8 wheel w/4.75" backspace w/o any problems. With a 15" wheel,5.5" backspacing is the limit before shock clearance problems occur. A larger diameter wheel allows more backspacing.
All the above is assuming the stock width rear is still in the car.

Chris, are you sure your rear end is a stock width 67 unit? Your numbers just don't compute. I can understand a 15x8 wheel w/4.25" backspacing and a 295 tire maybe having clearance concerns but that same wheel with at least 4.5" backspacing should not have a problem,,UNLESS you have a 68-72 rear. However,a 68-72 rear is wider so your wheels should be a long way from touching the shock mounts.

Clint,

Long time no hear from ya Bro. I have a stock 67 12-bolt that I was running in the car. My measurement wasn't exact, it could have been 4.5" back spacing. I ordered the same wheels Jeff Smith was running on his 66 Chevelle from an article in Car Craft magazine. But I know when I had the Rallys and 295's on the car it was tight.

Call me some time. :D

I went on American Racings website and the Torque Thrust II's come in 4.5" backspacing, 15x8 wheel. I didn't see a 15x8 with 4.75, hopefully the 4.5 will be enough.

Ive hear also 4.5-4.75 is optimal for the 15x8/295 combo.

Motorhead, any other rubbing issues?

What size wheel/backspace did you use on the front?
