I'll play the what's it worth game ...
The above car is my contractors.. he asked me if I can help him sell it as FAST.. baby is on the way and no time.... I listed it as is you see above..and I will admit, I know nothing about Impalas or values of them.. so I looked at what he had and said $3800 ?? but have had no interest :(
am I wayy off base? He tells me tonight he will take $3000 obo.. and I guess, I just can't help but think it's a steal ..
anybody know Impalas? It is a solid car though it does not Look like it.. has it's original drivetrain... it's a project.. what say yous :)
BillsCamino Sep 30th, 09, 10:02 PM If the frame is OK, that's a great deal Mike! Wondering what the trunk looks like...
1badss396 Sep 30th, 09, 10:20 PM The California and Miami Mexicans will be all over that car for that price...
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Sep 30th, 09, 10:41 PM The California and Miami Mexicans will be all over that car for that price...
Well they must all be asleep b/c I can't seem to find anyone??
Trunk and Frame are good too :(
BB68 Sep 30th, 09, 10:43 PM If I were closer Id buy it.
Worldwide Sep 30th, 09, 10:54 PM I'm in new mexico at the moment and those cars are pretty popular around here (low rider crowd, etc). That said, from what I've seen in local ads these past few weeks, that car may be overpriced. A driver in "decent" shape seems to be bringing about 6k. Projects like that, around 2k. But hey, that may be due to the fact that there are a lot of them around. Also, the low rider crowd doesn't seem too concerned about correct numbers or originality. It's more about looks.
my 2 cents
TonyZ Sep 30th, 09, 11:16 PM Just like a lot of other cars from the era - they all cost about the same to restore but some just don't have the final value to justify the work. I think the Impalas are cool but would want to sink too much into one.
1BLACKHARLEY Sep 30th, 09, 11:23 PM it's a tuff market everywhere, although it would be on par in socal, the shipping and possible title issues could be holding it back. i think patience is due here. the price is right, but like houses, it is taking longer to sell stuff. 63's rock, and are very desirable among chevy guys. hang in there...
Bill Pritchard Oct 1st, 09, 12:01 AM Price is right, Mike.....as Bill says, just have to wait for the right buyer to come along.
AmericanMuscle Oct 1st, 09, 12:55 AM Where exactly is the car located in PA? I will be at fall Carlisle this Friday and Saturday and would like to take a look at the car if it's near there. If you would prefer, you can PM the info. Thanks.
Bunz-T Oct 1st, 09, 4:37 AM Mike did a full frame off on a 62 SS and here are a few problems.
Most of the parts are twice as high as a chevelle. Interior especially.
There is just too much chrome to deal with. The pieces are high repro or rechromed.
Just will not dollar up in relation to build costs.
Limited appeal. unless it is a 409 car.
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Oct 1st, 09, 8:49 AM Appreciate all the replies thus far.. sincerely.
Couple things... First, I do realize patience is the name of the game in selling a car.. preachin to the choir :D.. and the right buyer may come along. BUT, I also know that realistic prices need to be put on cars, whether they are projects, drivers or full blown show cars.. otherwise they sit and sit and sit.. so this is what prompted me to ask.. is $3800 unrealistic for this car? or better yet... $3000 ?? I just don't know.. and as with many things.. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.,.. that will affect the sale. We have very few lowriders where I live :)
I do know about the cost of restoring these Big cars with all the chrome though.. and a small block SS vs a 409... but it's a solid car as projects go... everything is there... even the frame is good.. and Trunk.. as you can see..
If it were my car, I would be more patient, but it's not.. he's got a baby coming and really just wants out of it..
any other thoughts appreciated !
SPARK69 Oct 1st, 09, 8:52 AM comapare that car to the one for sale in the classified section for 16k (larry greene)"done" with a 327-300 hp 4spd red on red original car..max value on a good day for a ss is 25 k done around here!!( and she better be very slick)..i think half the problem with projects is people are seeing you can buy one done cheaper than you can have one fixed!! ..your in the ballpark of what the car is worth for sure..but advertise the car in a location where they are wanted real bad like nm or ca or fl..there is a big demand for the 63's-64's..but like most probally not in pa and probally not in nc either!!..but in so-cal!! they cant get enough of them puppies!! craigslist...:hurray:
Bunz-T Oct 1st, 09, 10:40 AM One thing to keep in mind Mike is that these 61-64 cars are remembered by a older different generation and have no broad line appeal to the majority of buyers whose average age is well below 50. If you build one back original it will only take a few trips to bore the hell out of you. Except the niche low rider market there are just not many people interested. $3000 may be all the money if you can get it.

BINGO! There is only two ways to sell a car like this, take it in the shorts to move it or wait, wait, wait! You'll need the same patience as the guy selling his vette.

droptop396 Oct 1st, 09, 12:04 PM I think realistically that $1800.00 to $2400.00 will probably make that car more appealing.
You would think that the impalas would sell easily due to their popularity, but all of the early full size chevy stuff is difficult to sell unless you have something unusual or rare, ie: convertible, 409, 327 w/4speed. etc....
Bunz-T Oct 1st, 09, 12:13 PM Here is an example. This car was done to the max all the way down to the resonators in the exhaust. Brought $25K to LA 3 years ago. I would hate to know what it would cost to get the 63 to where this 62 was. It got oohs and aahs but was tough to sell.
JNorton Oct 1st, 09, 12:22 PM For what it's worth, my FIL bought 2 1/2 63's in Alabama for about 1500 bucks, the two full ones were almost as nice as the one shown in the original post. The 1/2 was a 4-door that had been T-boned but had a good 283/Powerglide drivetrain. He chopped, cut, rebuild and now has a pretty nice looking white 63 and a freshly built 283. We are probably putting the front and rear glass in it this weekend, then he'll start working on the interior.
The chrome is indeed the PITA and expensive. He was fortunante enough to scavange enough chrome from the donors to account fro just about every piece he needed. He polished them up and they look great.
newmexguy Oct 1st, 09, 12:35 PM you could try the www.teamimpala.net site, but there is very little traffic there. I may be in "lowrider" country, but have found it very hard to sell what i thought were very desirable parts for the impala, still have 62, 63, 64 doors, a 63 trunk lid (Biscayne) a 62 repairable hood, and some 65-66 sheetmetal along with glass and window regulator parts that needs to go.
robtco99 Oct 1st, 09, 12:56 PM IMO have the owner spend a few hours put the doghouse back on the car if he's looking to get the maximum money out of it. Also no mention of what kind of shape the front clip is in or if it the car runs.
3k the way it is is a good price.
3.8k if the motor runs and the doghouse is on it seems like a good price
Burnsamatic Oct 1st, 09, 1:49 PM You could try chevyimpalas.com. They are in Ohio, only 1 state over. They may be interested in it.
JNorton Oct 1st, 09, 3:44 PM I just realized the car mentioned in the frist post was an SS. My FIL's is not.
Mike,
I have a coworker that's looking for one. When I get back on Monday (Carlisle tomorrow) I'll show him this add.
andrew T Oct 1st, 09, 8:55 PM those style of Impala have a large following in the car world in a few places(not just low riders!). But right now it will be hard regardless of what the car is.
Good luck to your pal;)
SoCal Bryan Oct 1st, 09, 9:27 PM I live in southern California, the Inland Empire, where these cars are very popular. I'm always surprised at how cheap I see them. Thinking about picking up a cruiser for myself down the road when I get more garage space. No way you could get it to the level of these drivers for 3 or 4 grand. The numbers, IMO, don't mean a whole lot with a 283/PG. I don't think having a "real SS" is all that important to the lowrider crowd either. They just restomod & bag 'em anyway. I think you're looking at $1,700-2,300.
