: Another WIW ....
SJS Sep 28th, 09, 11:46 AM Hello Everyone-
I need your help with the following....
There are two Chevelles that I have found and I would like to know which one would be worth more in the long run. Both are very nice cars. Here are the details:
'70 Malibu
Frame off restored, painted floor pan new body bushings, fuel lines painted frame etc.
Original 52K mile drive train, 350/350 auto/10bolt cleaned up and painted
Options: AM radio, AC, tinted glass
Original pristine green bench seat vinyl and cloth interior
Original nice glass
New Mist green paint and new black vinyl top
Original 14" ralleys with radials
Brightwork is perfect
No paperwork
All stock, uncut, unmolested
Versus:
'72 Malibu
All original car in pristine survivor condition
Gulf Green with black vinyl top
Original 24K drive train, 350/ 350 auto/10 bolt
Options: AM/FM radio 4 speaker stereo with add on Craig 8 track, AC, tinted glass
Interior is black bench seat vinyl
Everything is original
Original owner
All documentation, POP, window sticker, build sheet, misc. repair receipts and dealer info
All stock, uncut, unmolested survivor
Only new 14" radial tires have been added to the ralleys and undercoating was applied to the floor and trunk pans
Both cars are in beautiful shape and are very similar, so which one would be the more desirable car and would be worth more in the long run?
TIA
animal69 Sep 28th, 09, 12:33 PM The '70 would be worth more, all things being equal. I wouldn't mind having either.
Chevelle_Nut Sep 28th, 09, 12:37 PM Green is not the most desirable color and the 70 is lacking details and documents. Some don't like 72's and some don't think they are as desirable but I would go with the 72 because it is a survivor.
Bcool Sep 28th, 09, 1:16 PM What is you intention? Is it to keep the car as it is? Are the cars the same price. Documents would typically be the way to go unless you plan on building a stunnig car using one of these as a baseline.
In the long run I don't think either car (as they are) would increase in value tremendously without putting money into them.
dpvoiceguy Sep 28th, 09, 1:17 PM Steve,
Your question was "which one would be worth more in the long run". That's a difficult question...in the long run implies that you are inquiring about their value at some point in the future. Between now and then, what would you do to the car? That's the big variable. If your intent was to buy one of these and leave it exactly as-is, the '70 would bring more $ upon resale. If you were planning to do a full-frame off restoration, it would depend on the quality of the end result.
As mentioned above I too would be darn happy to drive either one. Good luck!
AZCamino Sep 28th, 09, 2:58 PM I think a survivor with documentation would be worth more in the long run.
Sorry guys for the lack of direction, but since they are such nice cars I would hate to modify them so I would keep them as is and enjoy them. My question was really geared towards the future if and when I would sell, then which would be the more desirable easier car to sell (if it every came down to that). I guess I should just pick one and go for it and not worry about "what ifs". Each of these cars has their own uniqueness.
Thanks!
Alwhite00 Sep 28th, 09, 6:46 PM The 70 will probably bring a little more $$ but they both sound like decent cars. Are they the same price?

hot rod bill Sep 28th, 09, 9:30 PM steve, i think so far you have gotton some good responce so far, but heres what i think you should do. find you a 2 headed nickel flip the best 2 out of 3 & then get the car you want:Dl:). bill
RoyalPlum67SS Sep 28th, 09, 10:11 PM If I had your money Steve I would buy them both :D. I think every Chevelle guy should have two Chevelles anyway. Two money pits are always better than one :D. I think the 70 is the better deal, but you might try flipping that two headed nickel l:).
grandsport Sep 28th, 09, 10:16 PM Go with the 72. I'm sick of all the talk about 70s being the best year.:D
hot rod bill Sep 28th, 09, 10:21 PM i think we need to take a poll on this issue. :D bill

If i didn't have two kids to put through college back to back then i would consider it. Or i can wait until your finished with your circuit tour next year and just buy your two.:D
RoyalPlum67SS Sep 28th, 09, 10:48 PM Just for you Stevie... I would make you a package deal :D. They are about to bankrupt me anyway l:).

Bcool Sep 29th, 09, 12:59 PM I likke them both, the problem is the 70 has a lot of pictures and in those pictures it looks to me that someon did a lot of work but didn't take the time to finish spray bombing some of the parts, or left overspray on other parts (black paint) hood springs, upper control arms etc.
when I see that it makes me think that someone is trying to "over" represent the car. I don't know what the asking prices are here but I would look real hard at some of the details... I'm partial to 70's so....take it for what it's worth. All the panels that I can see look to fit pretty well, there is one trunk picture - where the lid closes looks kinda funky like the paint is lifting or adhesion is bad or something...
Good luck.
MEJ1990TM Sep 29th, 09, 1:39 PM Go with the 72. I'm sick of all the talk about 70s being the best year.:D
1970 is not the best year. It's the only year.
Alwhite00 Sep 29th, 09, 3:46 PM Wow, That 70 is incredible. (I know, Not perfect) but I would kill to have a vehicle that solid & unmolested. What are they asking for them?

The '70 is $15K and the '72 is $18K. I know that's alot, but they are real nice cars.
Alwhite00 Sep 29th, 09, 7:45 PM If I was in the market for a car that 70 for 15K would be real tempting. I know it's not the best color combination but I really appreceiate an nice solid car like that. AC too.

69F41SS Sep 29th, 09, 7:49 PM Green on green has always been my favorite color combo on a chevelle. I would go for the 70 hands down. My decision has nothing to do with the fact that 70's are number 2 on my list behind the 69. Its just that this particular 70 has the right color combo and looks to be more original. I think you get way more bang for your buck with this 70 over this 72.

I offered him $13k for the 70 and got shot down. I too like the 70 better but the story and documentation of the 72 is alluring. The 72 is close enough to me that i may run over there next weekend and check it out.
ss1970chev454 Sep 30th, 09, 8:20 AM that 70 looks familiar but now sporting new paint. Even at 15K it seems reasonable. You might try 14K and see what he says.
Cheverolet must have painted half the 70 production that mist green.
Dropzilla Sep 30th, 09, 10:28 AM Sell the kids buy the 70.:beers:

Yeah, the 70 is located near Atlanta. I'll call him again and see what he says. He is pretty stubborn and firm with his price.
Hey Greg,...where in central Ohio are you? I just moved to Columbus a few months ago.
ss1970chev454 Sep 30th, 09, 12:21 PM Actually East of town. But this work thing has me right smack in the middle.:waving: Welcome!
that was a nice 69 you had there:thumbsup:

I agree!! I vote for the '70:thumbsup:
RoyalPlum67SS Sep 30th, 09, 7:41 PM Keep your eye on him Greg... He's trouble with a capitol (T) :D. He caused all kinds of trouble here and then moved away :D.

Yeah, I should have taken your 70 with me when I left, ...then I would have to be searching all over for a nice clean project. I could of had yours and been done!:D Hey, we're suppose to be taking about these two cars and not me.

LOL, I guess if he's your's and Bill's buddy, I'm gona' have to! :D
....get this, i found out that the 72 still has all of its original components under the hood. The only items that were changed are the belts, and he kept the old ones for grins. Wow, that's definatley a cool survivor.
AZCamino Oct 2nd, 09, 2:06 PM Does it come with the original wheels, also? I already voted for the 72, but it needs rallys instead of the aftermarket wheels. ;)
