I am in the process of installing almost all new steering linkage on my 67. With the centerlink bolted onto the car and inner tie rods hooked up(outer tie rods hanging), the driver side inner tie rod has a clearance problem. With the wheel turned all the way to the right, as you turn to the left the head or ball part of the tie rod hits the bottom edge of the motor mount (before the tires would be pointing straight). With the outer tie rod disconnected, I can maneuver it past the motor mount, but then the grease fitting hits the frame after turning to the left a little further.
Part of the problem I contribute to the differences between the new and old tie rods. The new tie rod is slightly larger (ball joint) and the grease fitting is positioned in a different place than the original lending it to running into something easier. I've tried a couple local parts stores and their tie rods are the same as my new one, I haven't found any like the originals.
My other concern is that the car has been wrecked in the passenger front with some frame damage in that corner that was "repaired" (before I bought it). Is it possible it tweaked the frame enough to cause my steering issue? The old tie rod showed a little rubbing in the same area thats a problem now.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.
