: UH OH what is Kevin up to now
Kevin R Sep 26th, 09, 12:33 AM Just brought home a CL buy. :D
So as you know my 427 is down right now and the .060 over 2 bolt block needs work. I'm not sure if the bore will clean up and still be good for my rotating assembly. I thought about going with a 2 bolt block and studding it. Then I would need to aline bore and hone the mains and buy a different timing chain to allow for the aline bore hone.
So I was looking on CL and found an add for a 454 block last 4#s 5445. He wanted 450 for it but I didn't want another 2 bolt. I asked if he would be willing to pull the pan so he did and what do you know its a 4bolt block:hurray: Of course I went up and bought it for 400 bucks.
The good,,, its a 4 bolt block that's standard bore:yes:
The bad is that it doesn't have thumb rods and has a cast crank. It also has 360 PP heads. (george?)
Im going to keep the crank and put it in my 2 bolt block and build a super budget 468 engine with all used parts. That will be after I get the new 4bolt 427 going.
Now it will have a virgin .060 overbore to start with and have a super stong bottom end to handle the RPMs Im turning.
Here are some pics:D

kettbo Sep 26th, 09, 12:46 AM Good score Kevin!
Those are the pistons that I have in my current Super Budget 454 engine, dish and a valve notch. Pretty fearsome stuff!!!
I'll haul your 360 PPs away if need be....stack them with Don's 236 PPs. Future BBC projects. I do have a set of thumb rods for your next build if you are interested. I can bring them tomorrow to the BBQ along with rods for Bad.Samaritan.
Good you got the whole Enchilada. Makes building an engine really easy when you have all the misc crap lying around.
66Dreamer Sep 26th, 09, 12:47 AM Nice find Kevin. :beers:
We can bench race that build at the BBQ tomarow.
FourEightyNine Sep 26th, 09, 12:48 AM Im lost now, why did you need an align hone on the 2bolt block? I understand that its a good idea if your going to stud it but I cant recall your motor having any issues. All of your problems came from elsewhere.

Perfect yes I will bring the heads. Is it going to be a trade,, heads for the rods? If so Im in:thumbsup:

I was going to strengthen the bottom end. I was concerned about the wear on the bearings. You know the nice wear on the sides. Well I was going to add the studs then have it Aline bored but now with the 4 bolt I wont need to so that saves me the money for the studs and machine work.
Brettd85 Sep 26th, 09, 12:52 AM Lol, you are
Kevin R Sep 26th, 09, 12:56 AM Lol, you are
You know me so well Brett:D;)
kettbo Sep 26th, 09, 12:57 AM Yes, will bring the rods.
they still have pistons on them....sorry, no 60-over sets.
your stock crank will be good for any sane performance level.

gotago Sep 26th, 09, 8:05 AM Good find Kevin!! I didn't have my block line honed as everything checked out with the studs and main caps bolted on. Good luck with it!!
Brettd85 Sep 26th, 09, 12:25 PM I may have missed it but why are you going to stud it? Whats wrong with the bolts at your power level?
Kevin R Sep 26th, 09, 12:32 PM I may have missed it but why are you going to stud it? Whats wrong with the bolts at your power level?
I would stud a 2 bolt block with the RPMs that I like but didnt do it on the first build. It still had the stock main bolts and looking at the bearing wear it may have had some movement.
With the 4bolt block I will just run a good set of ARP bolts.
Brettd85 Sep 26th, 09, 12:32 PM Roger.
Kevin R Sep 27th, 09, 12:15 AM I just had to get the rest of the engine done so when I got home from the BBQ I headed out to the garage. I borrowed Gregs balancer puller and pulled the balancer. Got the cam and crank out so its down to a bare block.
I have a pretty good pile of metal for the recycler. I did save the cam cover and valve covers. They are in great shape and with a clean up and paint will look new.
Im going to take my air grinder and smooth out the lifter galley for better oil drain back. Just something I would like to do to keep me busy for a few days.
kettbo Sep 27th, 09, 12:41 AM Kevin....
Could well be some cap movement on that one particular bearing
How does your crankshaft from the new 4-bolt block look?
I do have some 4-bolt main caps lying around. Thinking about putting them on my 454 in the garage.

All the bearings on the main are worn but they all look about the same. The rods could just be polished up but the mains would most likely have to be taken down .010
Kevin R Sep 27th, 09, 12:51 PM I finally placed the order for parts needed (some wanted:D) to get the 427 back together.
I got a ring set, ARP rocker studs, pushrod guides, ARP 4bolt main bolt kit, A melling select oil pump built for higher reving engines, oil pick up, and a set of Comp cams new ultra pro rockers.
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/oldboxman/cca-1601-12_w_m.jpg
Valve guides are on order and should be here in about a week or so.
I bought all the gaskets last week. The very last thing I will need is push rods but that will be after checking proper valve train geometry.
66 Buick Special Sep 27th, 09, 2:58 PM Sounds like you're on the road to recovery Kevin.

The stress of the whole thing is gone now. I finally got a good nights sleep last night. I dont sleep good when I have things running through my head.
Anyway its now starting to be fun again.

That's good, a mini break away always recharges one's batteries to get back to wrenchen.
66SSFan Sep 27th, 09, 10:00 PM Those rockers are awesome, I tried for months to order a set, but they are new and where not on the market. I bought the stainless Comp rockers, which are heavier:sad:

You talked me into it yesterday:D
66SSFan Sep 27th, 09, 11:39 PM Really? Well I do think the Comps are awesome, they still are not better than the Jesel shaft rockers you already have, why change from the shaft set up? I know the new Comps are not cheap, my stainless set was over $500!

Simple is better. The rockers are 335 for a set from Summit.
Kevin R Sep 28th, 09, 5:59 PM Im done cleaning up the lifter valley. Its ready to bore and deck.:D

Kevin R Oct 2nd, 09, 10:47 AM Any developments here?
Not yet. Waiting on the new valve guides.
Kevin R Oct 6th, 09, 10:37 PM Ok valve guides came in today.
Darryl told me to bring up the block so he can get it in the tank. He also has my heads to replace the guides and my crank for a quick polish. I took up my springs to have them checked for pressure and they suck. They were all over the board for pressures. The seat pressures were from 115 to 145 @ the same install height and anywhere from 330 to 380 open.
When they came from brodix they were advertised as 140 seat 380 open.
These are now junk and I will be buying new springs. Doc and I already picked them out of the comp prod catalog.
Thanks Darryl.
OutCast Oct 6th, 09, 10:45 PM Apparently a good idea to check all springs before install. Darryl was kind enough to show me how to test mine last winter. Even tried to trick me on one of the springs. He's a pretty cagey teacher. ;)
Kevin R Oct 6th, 09, 11:00 PM Ok order was placed for a new set of springs that are 140 open and should be somewhere in the 390 range at .600 lift.
They come as a set. You get dual race springs, ti retainers, 10* locks and free VTO seals for 219.00 from Competition Products.
66 Buick Special Oct 7th, 09, 1:59 AM Sounds like just what the Doctor ordered... oh, wait... it is what the Doc ordered.:D

gee, smokin deal......wish I had looked where you looked....
that is not much more than I paid for springs with regular retainers.
Good going!
I suspect your springs were probably OK when you got them. They were probably not up to the abuse that you subjected them to...:noway:

I have talked to Mike (wolfplace) and he said the same thing. He said that if the rocker geometry was not correct it could cause valve float that can and did destroy the springs.
Lesson learned and I will double and triple check the new shaft rockers for correct pattern on the valve stem before I order push rods. It will be correct this time around for sure.
Also just dropped off my headers at the sandblasters. The ceramic coating is coming off and looks bad. I purchased some Rustoleum high heat primer and paint good to 2000degrees. I will bake on each coat with my propane torch.

My local guy blasted and coated my headers for $175.00
primernovaben Oct 7th, 09, 4:39 PM i got my headers blasted and painted with bbq black for 35 bucks :D
Kevin R Oct 7th, 09, 7:47 PM I got the headers back and they are now hanging on the back deck painted flat aluminum. I gave each header a good wipe down of thinner then heated them up with my propane torch. They each got 3 coats of high heat primer then 3 coats of color. In between each coat I heated the headers up to bake on the paint. After the last coat I let them cool off a bit then blasted them with the heat. They look a lot better.
I also had time to completely clean the pistons and rods. I had cleaned off the tops of them last time so I need to pull the caps and clean the ring groves. They will get a soapy water bath just before install to get every last bit of dust or dirt off.
Kevin R Oct 9th, 09, 1:06 PM Well Im making another upgrade. I purchased a DB 140 amp internal 3 wire alternater. Im just drawing to much with my electric fans so Im sure this should help. Prices are good too.
I also started cleaning up the engine bay. Im painting the frame and going to paint the firewall. The wheel wells still look good with a wipe down so it wont be a huge job.
66 Buick Special Oct 9th, 09, 1:39 PM Sounds like you're getting things all squared away.
I've been stalling on tearing into my car due to lack of funds for the rebuild, but I'm thinking since Monday is an unpaid furlough day and the weather is looking okay, I might go ahead and rip the trans out.

It'll all be back to normal around the beginning of december.
Kevin R Oct 13th, 09, 6:21 PM Painting of the engine compartment is done. I bought some friction tape and cleaned up the wireing in the engine bay.
Just recieved the springs ,ti retainers, locks, valve seals and my oil pick up today. The alt should be here Friday so I think I have everything except the push rods which will be the last part to order.
I fixed my engine stand yesterday too. The two top arms that bolt to the block got bent with all the weight of the BB:D
I went down to Lowe's and bought some thicker angle iron and cut them to length and welded them together. I also bought a lenght of tubing and instead of just welding it to the mount I drilled it out and ran it all the way through to make it stronger. I also made them an inch longer for more support. It can handle the weight now:yes:
Kevin R Nov 22nd, 09, 7:07 PM I was up at Darryl's today and I was able to see one half of my block being bored. It took 4 cuts per cylinder to get to 4.304 and ready for plate honing.
Darryl will finish the other 4 cylinders when he gets time.
He did hot tank my crankshaft and polished it so its home and ready to go. He also got all the valves cleaned and resurfaced for me.
We checked the new valve springs I will be running and we came up with 145lb at 1.950 install height and 400lb open which will be perfect for this cam. Things are progressing nicely.
Brettd85 Nov 22nd, 09, 7:11 PM Sweet! Are you going to paint the hood also?

No extra money for that right now but I would like to some day.
Brettd85 Nov 22nd, 09, 8:35 PM You going to race it this year or just cruise?
kettbo Nov 22nd, 09, 8:59 PM I forget why Kevin is having a block bored...Alzheimer's kicking in already I guess....
OK, now I remember....the current block is gonna be a budget 468 and the 4-bolt block with fresh bore and hone will be the foundation of the freshened super 427....
FRYNTYR Nov 22nd, 09, 9:02 PM Doing a 4-bolt up for his 427. His 2 bolt will be used for a welfare build 2nd motor.
kettbo Nov 22nd, 09, 9:04 PM I remembered faster than Doc could jump in....
Nothing wrong with a welfare 454 :D
Kevin R Nov 22nd, 09, 9:06 PM You going to race it this year or just cruise?
It will go down the track a couple of times next year.
The 2 bolt will be a welfare 427:yes:
So far I have the block, rods and pistons. I have aquired a nice crank that will need on of the journals fixed but it will still work ;)
Other parts will have to wait until Im back working steady again and I have other finances worked out.
primernovaben Nov 22nd, 09, 10:20 PM saw kevs block on the boring machine today. i can tell he had some time on his hands cause all the casting acne was ground completely smooth. lookin good kevin :D

Kevin R Nov 23rd, 09, 10:13 PM Just got a text from Darryl and the block is bored.:hurray:
Torque plate hone along with the block being decked and it will be ready for short block build.:hurray::thumbsup:
