: What is the stuff under a 67 convertible A pillar cover?

My dad and I removed the A pillar covers as part of the restoration of his 67 convertible. Fortunately, it was in good shape underneath, but we found this strange hard plastic type of material that was partially filling the void between the windshield frame and the pillar cover.

What is this plastic stuff? What's its purpose? We scraped most of the stuff off before the body and pillar covers were media blasted and then coated with epoxy primer. Is it necessary to put this stuff (or something else) back in there as part of the pillar cover reinstallation?

If nobody knows what I'm referring to, I can try to find a decent picture of what I'm talking about.

Thanks, guys. But I don't think that's what I'm looking for. Here's a pic of what I'm talking about, the yellowish plastic type material. I don't even understand it's purpose. Do we need to worry about replacing it?

Looks like some kind of foam insulation to me ...

My 67 chevelle I am restoring had something like that also under the pillar covers. I just finished up painting my car and all I did was put some seam sealer at the top of the pillar and down the edge when I put the pillar back on. My car won't see too much outside weather so I think I will be ok.

Jason - I have checked in on the progress of your car over the past few months. It's looking great! I can't wait until my dad's gets to the point of getting some fresh paint.

I actually looked through your thread last night again specifically to see if you had said anything about this plastic stuff. (If you did, I missed it. :) ) Like yours, my dad's car isn't going to have much exposure to the elements, so your seam sealer approach sounds like the way to go.

I painted them on the car. I have epoxy primer and a couple of coats of high build primer under them. When I installed them I ran a bead of seam sealer down the inside A-pillar then down the outside edge. I snaped them on and filled the top. Mine were a pain to get off a lot of seam sealer and that yellow stuff. I seen no reason for all this. My top header piece had like 2 tubes of that gray seam sealer under it. Again I seen no reason for all this.
