: Looked at the Chevrolet Equinox
rubadub Sep 25th, 09, 4:27 PM The bride and I went to an estate and some yard sales and stopped at the adjoining town and looked at a new equinox, a 2010.
I have been thinking about one, anyway after he got done showing me how everything works, I ask him about the price.
It was a few hundred over $27,000.00, so I ask him, if I buy it, it will be cash no trade, so how much. He says theres some kind of deal a guy might be able to get into to knock $500.00 off, but in all reality he said they only have them for a week and there sold, so they won't discount them.
So, I told him maybe a few months down the road we can talk. I also ask him about the warranty, and he said 5 years and a 100,000 miles.
I told him after looking at how everything works, after 5 years if theres an electrical problem it might get expensive, because there is a lot of stuff in there, and told him I have a hard time buying a new vehicle without the 10 year 100,000 warranty.
And you know, the car I have now, Hyundia Accent (little beater) has the 10 year 100,000 warranty, so I still have 6 years of warrant left.
I like the looks of the Equinox, but a close up look at the paint out in the sun, its not as good as the (little beater) I'm driving, and its 4 years old.
I looked at a new Dodge van two weeks ago, they will discount them a couple of thousand right out of the gate, but wow the paint on the Dodge was horrible, I guess a guy could sand out the orange peel and buff it, but there new cars.
So anyway, I probably wouldn't buy the equinox or any other new vehicle without the 100 mile 10 year deal.
I would feel a lot better about myself buying the dodge or chevy, but I worked hard for my money.
Rob
grandsport Sep 25th, 09, 4:48 PM I have bought a few Equinox at the GM auction and not really impressed with them after 20-30 k on them(sorry guys). This is probably a biased post,as a lot of you guys know I am partial to Chrysler products. They just seem to be a more trouble free used vehicle to sell IMO. My wifes 07 Town and Country Ltd with 27k has never had a problem.
1badss396 Sep 25th, 09, 4:51 PM Rob quit wasting time shopping for a Equinox, and get back to work on your 69:yes:
RyanNilcea05 Sep 25th, 09, 4:51 PM I'd agree with Gary, I had one as a rental. I wasn't impressed either. Have you considered a Santa Fe? Same 10/100,000 warrenty.
rubadub Sep 25th, 09, 5:03 PM Rob quit wasting time shopping for a Equinox, and get back to work on your 69:yes:
Thats it I'm coming down there.:D

Thats probably what i'll get.
The little beater I have, I waxed it up a couple of days ago, and it sets out all winter, snow, rain and sun and the paint looks new, even better then the chevy and dodge and its over 4 years old.

Alan Sep 25th, 09, 5:11 PM but I worked hard for my money.
Rob
Personally, I think buying a new vehicle of any kind is a waste of a person's hard earned money. Nothing like getting ripped off on resale value right after leaving the dealer lot. Whether you pay 100% cash or get a loan, you still lost a lot of coin. I've purchased my last new vehicle. From here on out it's a good used Certified vehicle with decent warranty included. I'll let someone else take the depreciation hit in the first 2 to 3 years of ownership
Also, besides the Corvette, I'm no fan of any new Chevy. A Buick looks interesting. Have you looked at a Ford Edge or Ford Flex?
rubadub Sep 25th, 09, 5:15 PM I almost forgot, when the young salesman was showing me the chevy he says check out these door gaps, thats some quality stuff there.
I said son, let me tell you about door gaps.
I said the up and down gaps are really nice, but up here at the top back part of the door with the curve they didn't do as good as the rest of it, but not to bad.
Now take a look here I said, this is the radius of the edge of the door, now look at this one and this one, and see how there rounder.
If you want those radius's right you need to have a small flat spot on the edge and the radius goes up to that, on both sides.
Anyway I told him I was doing a chevelle and when I got it done I'd bring it over and show him some door gaps.:)
RyanNilcea05 Sep 25th, 09, 5:17 PM Take a peek at the Santa Fe GLS AWD. You can pick up a 2009 for short change with the rebates. PM me, and I can work you up a price.
rubadub Sep 25th, 09, 5:17 PM :rolleyes::D
So your not buying the paint quality, I can get pictures if I have to.

The edge is a good looking ride, but I think they might want quite a bit of money for them and then the warranty.

Jeez Rob you will be 200 years old before you get the 69 done, get your arse to work on the Chevelle and forget about a new car.....:D
Thats it I'm coming down there.:D
Drive your 69 down here, oh that's right its still in 1000 pieces, LOLl:):p

classicfan1 Sep 25th, 09, 5:40 PM Buy a new Hemi Challenger with all kinds of high end options. Make it either yellow or that nice lime green Mopars are so famous for. Then, store it in a climate controlled environment and never drive it. 35-40 years later, sell it and you'll be a millionaire! :D
68chevelle533 Sep 25th, 09, 5:41 PM My 2003 GMC pickup has been out in the Texas sun for over 6 years now and the paint is still great. No problems whatsoever on the truck electricial or otherwise. Must be the only americian car on the planet that is troublefree.

Not a good idea with Rob, he is already doing that with his 69 Chevelle and it is taking him 100 years to put it back together nowl:)
Alwhite00 Sep 25th, 09, 5:52 PM Me & the bride looked at a GMC Terrain (Equinox platform) and it looked pretty nice, The wife said she wants one when the lease is up on my 08 Acadia. The GMC seems a little fancier than the Chevy. I didn't drive it yet so that could all change. Pretty roomy and good MPG (I think it was 22/32)

No doubt they are a nice ride, but there a little more money also.

How many miles do you have on it?
My buddy has 2005 silverado and he's having problems and its got 50 some thousand miles and out of warranty, but don't quote me on miles specific.
He said he might trade it in rather then pay to have it fixed.
Although it sounds like you got a really good truck.
rubadub Sep 25th, 09, 6:44 PM Looks like the Hyundai is about $5,460.00 less money then the Chevy out the door, then the difference in the warranty, I don't like it, but why buy the Chevy.
OldSoldier Sep 25th, 09, 6:52 PM My brother works as an engineer for Hyundai in Michigan. I helped my sister buy a Santa Fe when Hyundai had a paint problem on a batch of their vehicles and she got it for $16K I think. So far my brother still has his job and sister still drives her truck.
Sure is hard to pass up the total car 10/100K warranty, which shows they are really standing behind their product. But how many miles do you plan on putting on it each year? 20K would put it out of warranty in 5 years, whereas the Chevy powertrain is 5/100K which would last for 5 years as well. I think the more you drive it the more the Chevy is a viable option.

I own 5 american cars that are trouble free, however I will let all the yahoos with the love affair with japanese cars buy them. I'd rather have a Chevrolet, than a ME2 Camry or Accord any day of the week

I agree, but my Murano is changing my mind in daily drivers a little..:D:p
Honestly, there is nothing Chevy on an Equinox but the emblems.

I only put about 6000 miles a year on one, and a few miles on my pickup, like maybe 500 miles in a year on the truck anymore.

So were yahoos? I've never been in love with a car, I have had some I really liked.

A friend of mine just put over $3000 in engine repairs in his Nissan Frontier truck. It had a little over 120,000 miles on the odometer. He bought it new. And I thought these were the vehicles that never wore out? They're supposed to run forever, 300,000 - 400,000 miles?
It just goes to show, real life trumps hype every time. I mean, his Nissan is nice, I'd love to own it, but I would expect to encounter the same maintenance issues on a Frontier truck with over 100k on the odometer as I would a Chevy or a Ford.

You make a valid point, but what we have run into in the last couple of years are electrical problems on some of these newer cars.
Mechanically they last for just so long, but then you throw in these expensive electrical repairs, and having a warranty still in effect can save a guy a ton of money.
As it is now, I have seen a few cars, vans and pickups with some electrical problems that the owners can't afford to fix, so much an hour plus the computer.
Back in 1970 an electrical problem was not a big deal or very costly, you usually just fixed it yourself.
Anybody reading this that has had some expensive electrical work done on there vehicle that was out of warranty, like a dollar figure.
Last one I got in on was a 5 year old dodge van with an electrical problem, what an aggravation, we finally took it to the dealer.
Alan Sep 26th, 09, 12:22 AM I had air bag system problems on the '05 GMC Sierra I bought new. Luckily this was under warranty. $1000 worth of parts, three trips to the dealer, and probably at least 4 hours of labor. Hit and miss probably with these new vehicles, but I don't know anyone that hasn't had an electrical problem of some sort on a newer vehicle. What gets me is fit and finish of these new cars (of all makes and models). I drop $30k on a vehicle only to get squeaky plastic, rattles, and squishy TRUCK suspension! My '71 Chevelle with orignal interior has less squeaks and rattles. I drive a lot of rental cars and if they are the same quality that's on dealer lots, I feel sorry for the people buying this crap auto makers are pushing down consumer's throats. Auto makers still have a long way to got in fit and finish. At least for anything in the $35k - under price range. They dropped the ball hard on my '05 Sierra. Pile of junk. That's why GM won't get my hard earned dollars on a new vehicle, neither will any other anto maker.
Good luck with your quest. [I'm just burned out with vehicles picking my pocket lately. Every last dime goes to fixing problems and to maintenance. Never ends. Sorry.]
MEJ1990TM Sep 26th, 09, 2:30 AM Screw the Chevy, Rob. For under $30k you can get a brand new Mustang GT with all the fixins. :D

I hear yeah on that.
MEJ1990TM Sep 26th, 09, 2:48 AM And don't think I have forgotten. When my business begins to get rolling I am going to buy a new Mustang GT and drive it out there so we can race. So buy yourself a new Mustang, and then get to work on that '69 of yours.
I'll be working on my '71 that the LS6 is going to go into. We can have the first race Mustang (Mine0 vs. Chevelle (Yours) and then Chevelle (Mine) vs. Mustang (Yours).
It will be brilliant I tell ya.
rubadub Sep 26th, 09, 2:50 AM Its gonna get ugly.
MEJ1990TM Sep 26th, 09, 2:58 AM Well ugly for you maybe. Noisy too. As you are listening to that 12.25:1 LS6 street monster running uncapped. I'll just have to get used to looking in my rear view mirror. :)

Yeah, I don't know know what's up with all the electrical bugs. I noticed that too when I was a fleet manager. A lot of our newer trucks had to go in for warranty electrical work.
That's not a quality issue though. That's an engineering issue. The guys on the line only assemble the parts they're given to work with.
Chevelle_Nut Sep 26th, 09, 9:49 AM I just spent almost $1500 on an antilock problem with my 2005 Ponota Vibe. It would have been $2,000 but the dealer did not fix it right the first time and I raised a stink. I am still fighting with GM about it too.
My 93 Sunbird's ABS system works fine as does my 2000 Durangos, never had a problem with them. There is too much garbage on the systems. If I had to buy a new car I don't know what I would do, I probably would resurrect an older car.
RyanNilcea05 Sep 26th, 09, 9:50 AM Thankfully my Ranger is almost the same technology wise as they were in 1993. The only thing they changed was the nose.

They've had ABS problems for years. What most people don't know is, much of the engineering and design of the subsystem components, such as the anti-lock brake systems, is done overseas. I read last week that GM relies heavily on the engineering departments of its European holdings. The article said GM used Opel's engineers for years for work on parts and components on cars sold and built here.
bulb122 Sep 26th, 09, 10:29 AM And before anyone bashes GM, isn't the Vibe a rebadged Toyota Matrix? I find it entertaining that the 12 year older Sunbird brakes are fine, and the toyota brakes.... :D

You're right about the Matrix.
bdss396 Sep 26th, 09, 12:56 PM I'm very happy with the fit and finish of my '09 Malibu.
Chevelle_Nut Sep 26th, 09, 2:21 PM Everything on the Vibe has Toyota written all over it. The radio display also went out a month ago, it cost me $100 to have the bulbs replaced after I pulled it out and sent it to the audio shop.
A stereo/car starter guy I know said that the wire gauge was decreased in GM trucks after 06 and that has created electrical issues??
rubadub Sep 27th, 09, 1:49 AM I was talking to my insurance man a couple of months ago, and he mentioned trading up to a two or three year old dually pickup.
I told him he might want to do a little research because it seems they keep adding more electrical all the time to the new vehicles.
Told him he should find a forum on the particular truck he's thinking about buying, and see what the owners have to say, or if that particular truck has a lot of electrical problems.
We don't see all the service bulletins the dealerships see, but if a man is buying one out of warranty or all most out of warrany, it would pay to do the research.
I guess thats kind of like buying a Chevelle, we give them a good going over.:)
Pron70 Sep 27th, 09, 2:09 AM i just read the first post of this thread and it caught my eye about the paint job. my buddy at work just bought a brand new 2009 regular cab dodge truck its like a deep water blue or something. anyways the paint job on this thing is horrible. he bought it with like 0.4 miles on it. it has the worst orange peel ever on the entire truck. everyone at work has noticed it too.
Dave427 Sep 27th, 09, 12:14 PM I work where they build the Equinox and Terrain buy one!!!
The new 2010 is alot nicer than the older ones. The 4 cylinder has the Direct Injection and works really well.
