: New lines leaking

I bought new lines a month ago and I cannot get any of the fittings to stop leaking. I've trying tightening and loosening them, used thread sealent, but always leaks through the fitting where the pipe goes through. I'm guessing that the flares are bad......but for all of them? They weren't cheap either....which suprises me because this is just one of many problems I have with these lines. I've tried bleeding the brakes for days and cannot get any pedal pressure. Any help would be great.

Stainless or mild steel lines?

Mild steel.

ALL the fittings?
Were they pre-flared with double flares?

I would be asking the people where they came from.

You shouldn't be using thread sealant (or anything other than a drop or two of oil for lubrication) on flare type fittings.

Yup.......pre-flared with double 45 deg. flares....or what should be double 45 deg. flares. And I was hesitant on using thread sealer because I know there should be nothing on the fittings. I'll e-mail them and find out what's up.

If the flares are actually bunk.....would I be able to run them through a flaring tool to "true" the flares better.......or would I be better off cutting the whole flared section off and starting anew......because the fit of the lines are so bad that I have plenty of line to cut off and be useable.

Over tightening the DF fittings can also cause them to leak. I have been guilty of that one.

They're from the Right Stuff........but I'll wait to hear what they say about this before I do any cutting.

Take a good look at your seating surfaces on the calipers and wheel cylinders, make sure they're all good with no rust or pitting.

The worst leaks are connections where the hard line meets the flex line, and the flex line is newish SS Braided line that have been on the car for about 9 months.

I would definitely make you talk with someone at Right Stuff. The owner's name is Dave and I can guarantee that if there is a problem with the flares he will be concerned about it. I know that they are a fairly small outfit that does all their line making on site and that their QC is top notch. I personally have never had a problem getting one of their lines to seal (be it mild or stainless). Have you checked the seat of your braided lines to make sure they didn't take a set or formed to the old lines?

Maybe the problem is actually in the flex lines.

The 2 front ones have already been on the car for a while and have been leak free........the back one I just put on, but is leaking horrible, is the same lines as the fronts, and the fronts are now leaking pretty bad. So, there's a small chance it could be, but my guess is on the flares.

Well, I talked to Right Stuff yesterday.....apperntly I got the wrong set of lines, which explains alot, except for the sealing of the flares. Is there a big difference in flares for discs and drums?

They were good sports about it, I'm sending them the old lines and they're sending me back the right lines.....and they haven't given me any attitude which is noble of them smile.gif .
