: Muscle cars in the sport tuned/drifting world, are there any?
I'd like to know if there are any actual muscle cars out in the world of racing, such as drifting, road/track courses, twisties, etc. I know majority of the suspension aftermarket world that caters to our muscle cars have their own muscle car beefed up with their products, but are they even used for what they're designed to do?
Reason why I'm asking is, I talk to lots of people online in various age groups (other car forums), and sadly, the mindset is that muscle cars are "only good" for one thing, and that's going in a straight line! I always try to explain that that isn't the case anymore as there are plenty of companies out there that make aftermarket suspension components for our cars and that believe it or not, they can make our "old tech" muscle drive and handle just as good as, and in some cases better, then the new cars out there!
I've tried google to look for muscle cars in action, specs, and basically PROOF, but I have yet to find anything!? I don't know if I'm using the wrong wording, or what, but I'd like to know if any here has some helpful info on the subject! :) If there are pics of muscle cars in action, that'd be awesome to!
Any and all help, info is much appreciated! :beers:
87caprice Sep 22nd, 09, 4:09 PM Have you seen the latest "Fast and the Furious" movie. That car there at the end was amazing. Might have been the cameras but that was amazing.
Beaux Sep 22nd, 09, 4:10 PM There are autocross links in the pro touring forum right now. There have been a lot of videos posted over the years but I am not at home and dont have links.
Here is an article that covers one specific event and has old / new cars

If you search google there is a lot out there. If you look at the pro-touring and lateral G websites you will find much more.
You will get more here shortly but try a search. That article was one of the top two when I just ran a quick search.
rchevellea Sep 22nd, 09, 4:16 PM the tire Falken has a team of drifting cars and one of them is a 69 camaro....bad to the bone...

Scotch Sep 22nd, 09, 4:38 PM There's whole web communities dedicated to making musclecars handle well.
2 of the best are pro-touring.com and lateral-g.net. Lots of great info there, as well as in the Chevelle-centric Pro Touring section here.

Derek69SS Sep 22nd, 09, 5:34 PM Mine... I've done 4 autocrosses so far this year. I'm horribly outclassed in actual competitive events, but I'm just there to have fun. I can hang with the stock-ish street tire cars, but because of all the modifications, my street car gets classed with dedicated race cars that weigh 1200lbs LESS and roll on R-compounds.
I usually look to the other street-tire V8 cars (Vettes, F-bodies, & Mustangs) and just keep an eye on their times to see how I stack up.

How does yours match up against cars like that, especially vettes?
rianbechtold Sep 22nd, 09, 9:02 PM I know a few guys that go to autocross events. All they ever talk about are the miatas that go out there and kick everyone's ass. I went with them once and there was a bad a$$ early nova with a ls1 that killed everyone. I just laughed and asked what happened to the miata and they said that the nova always walks all over the other cars but the miata's cooler:confused::mad:
And yes, our muscle cars get a rap for being straight line cars only. That's cool. I remember driving my chevelle home from school one day and the on-ramp was a loop. I blew past all the 240's with my "straight line only" car:yes:
It doesn't take much to make our cars handle!

Derek69SS Sep 22nd, 09, 10:07 PM How does yours match up against cars like that, especially vettes?I can hang with the street tire C4s no problem. C5 and C6 are a whole different story (gives me a goal to shoot for though ;) ) Mustangs and Camaros are about equal, comes down to the driver.
My times are usually about the middle of the field. A lot of the little foreign cars are real quick through the tight parts of the course, but too underpowered and give up a lot of time through the fast parts.
MEJ1990TM Sep 22nd, 09, 10:48 PM Doesn't take much at all to make these muscle cars handle. I've always thought the Chevelle was a pretty good handling car. It's not as tight as the newer cars. But it is by no means a straight line only car.
MEJ1990TM Sep 22nd, 09, 10:52 PM Almost every time I've got some big SUV or a rice rocker riding my back end in a straight away. As soon as we hit the turns I can look back and they are a good five or six car lengths back. But they keep coming up on my back end in the straights. Gets kind of annoying actually.

There were plenty of "muscle cars" run in road racing, basicly the original Trans Am series was the same chassis as the big block cars that were set up for corners. Anyone who says that a 1960s american muscle car can't handle does not know what the hell they are talking about, it does take work but they do very well.
Drifting is for the children that do not know the fast way around a race track.
