I am a little confused but that is not hard to do. I bought a 366 a few months ago because I wanted the thumb rods and the forged crank out of it for my 427. The only rod I could see real well before I bought it was #8 and it indeed was a thumb rod. well today I pulled it down and it was the only thumb rod in the damn thing! The crank is forged and is standard standard so that is good. I started looking on craigslist for another set of rods and I found a set of Barry Miller alluminum rods that are 6.385. Stock rods are 6.135? Where would you use these 6.385 rods? Also, are the thumb rods that much stronger than the dog bone rods?
Here is what I am thinking guys. I had the pleasure of meeting Outcast John a couple of weeks ago. We had a couple of drinks and talked cars and racing and when he talked racing it seemed to me that he was having about as much fun that a man can have with his clothes on, and it got me to thinking I might like to give it a try.
Just down the road from me is a 66 Beaumont wagon that has been sitting for several years and I think I can get for a very reasonable price. The 12 bolt 4:10 posi I have sitting in my garage with c-clip eliminators will fit this wagon, the 427 I want to put back together will fit, All the nitrous oxide stuff that was in my Chevelle when I bought it (and have never used) will fit, and today I picked up another 454 block with 781 heads. Tomorrow I hope to pull the pan off the 454 and see if it is a 2 or a 4 bolt and what crank and rods it has in it.

the longer rods are for strokers like the 496 with a 4.25 stroke.

Beat me to the answer while I was typing. Those rods are for a 4.25" stroker crank used to make a 489 or 496 big block using a 454 block with the correct pistons. Wouldn't want to use aluminum rods in a street car.

I'd only use aluminum rods in a street car if where a serious blower engine. Too bad about the mix up of rods but keep looking and something will turn up.

You can use the longer rods for the shorter strock cranks too, just need the right pin height. If I came up with a set of 454 or 427 pistons that use a 6.385 pin height I'd go that direction, but I haven't, so I don't.

I know someone that has 4 sets of thumb rods ready to go with ARP's.

What I thought you were building the V32 to try to beat me.:D

for a 6.385 rod in a 427 its the same piston as a 4.25 stroke crank and stock length (6.135) rods

You guys may get a treat next year, it may make a showing. As for any motor and any amount of NOS, no!!, I already have a few race type cars. The 69 will stay a little more street. I do see 10's coming though.

I know where you may be able to get a nice solid flat tappet for the 69:D

YES!! Thanks for the reminder! I gotta get you some money. I was going to get it to you before you left the north island but you never called before you left. I forgot all about it.
I am also thinking that if I can get the time off I would sure like to show up there myself if they could stand another Canuck. After meeting you I have to think they must be a reasonable tolerant group.

No worries, Terry. Just let me know what you owe Brett, and I'll pay him, and you can pay me later. Even better, just come on down for the bbq. You'd fit in just fine with this motley bunch.

As for not calling on our way back out of Hardy, well, after 4 days on that fishboat with Mikey, we just sort of continued right along where we left off with you at the Glenlyon. It was a pretty quiet drive home. We were on a mission. ;)

You're starting to sound more and more like Jim D every day. You're both scared of any car that the WN 355 is in.

Thanks John I appreciate that. Brett PM'd me and I sent him one back. I am thinking I really could use a few days off and would really try and make it down there but every time it looks like things are slowing down at work, all hell breaks lose! If I do get away and bring my Chevelle am I allowed to do a burnout? LOL

My ex used to call me Yamaha because she said that was more polite than calling me a 2 stroke in front of friends.

The question though, is the thumb rod really that much stronger than the dog bone rod?

All Chevy BBC rods are forged. The thumb rod has more bulk in critical areas so it is clearly stronger. Throw ARPs in there, tough enough for any sane or semi-sane build.
The dimple rods have better metal than the thumb rods so these are great too.
(EDIT) DIMPLE, not Thumb rods come in 3/8 bolt and 7/16 bolt sizes.

Stroker engines....serious power but you gotta spend a lot to do it up right. I have not heard of the brand Terry mentioned...

Yes the thumb rods are much stronger than the dog bone. I've never seen a thumb rod break myself but have seen the dog bone ones break in the area above the rod bolt head. The thumb rods that have been part of failures were due to other things like stock rod bolts or major bearing failures.

Got the block I picked up yesterday mostly apart this evening and it does have the thumb rods, and by the look of the lines on crank I think it is forged. It's only a two bolt and it has had water in the cylinders so they are pretty damn rusty on the one head I did get off. The other one is being difficult and I was getting hungry.
I can't turn it over to get the numbers off the crank and one cylinder looks quite bad so I am not sure the block is even going to be useable. But I got a set of 781 heads, thumb rods and I think a steel crank for 100 bucks!
