I am restoring a '67 chevelle wagon. The steering box is leaking at the top. It seems to have been leaking for awhile, it is pretty crusty. I have decided to replace it. After reading all the postings I think a rebuilt unit is how I want to go. I dont want to have to chase down 20 year old boneyard cars for parts.
My question is should I stick with the stock ratio or go the close ? Being that it is a long car, does it matter? This will just be a cruiser. I see Advance Auto and Napa both carry them

Close ratio IMO. If you dont really care about it get whatever is cheapest.

You can buy my stock rebuilt power steering box, but it is stock ratio. It is very smooth, no leaks and totally rebuilt....and cheap. Take a look thru the classifieds on this site.

Why not use a box from a 93/98 Jeep Grand Cherokee They are cheap, $50 to $75 for a low mileage one, roll-overs are common and a lot of low mileage ones are out there in the bone yards. They really do bolt right in. Reuse your old pitman arm. It will reduce the turns to 2 3/4 turns and retaining the original turning radius. Lee mfg. in CA makes the adapters to use the old hoses for $10.00. You will also need the 3/4" splined rag joint from a 78 up Caprice, Malibu, etc. Have fun!

Thought this might be useful information.

I had the quick ratio conversion and firm feel done. Sent them my unit and got it back rebuilt and with the new ratio in about a week. Nice guy, too.

C'Mon, man! This is a public forum! Don't be telling us about the nice guy that you sent your unit out to and had a firm feel done. That just isn't right! tongue.gif
