parrothead6970 Sep 20th, 09, 11:17 PM my conv is getting closer to being finished and at this point im wondering what you guys do to keep your car from being stolen? I want to road trip in it some. When parking at motels shops etc.... what can we do?
658Chevy Sep 21st, 09, 2:59 AM I've had a Lok-Itt steering column lock and a remote ignition kill switch on my muscle cars for over 15 years. I've traveled all over the place and have been safe so far. The Lok-Itt is good as it covers the ignition lock and comes through the steering wheel instead of across it -- cutting the steering wheel won't do any good.
Also, park in well-lit areas, stay at the Motel that costs $25-50 more than the cheapest one (much cheaper in the long run -- less crime), and head-in park and turn your wheels before locking it down.
There are also different paging systems out there that call you on your cell phone if your car is started or moving, and then will GPS it's location.
That said, if they really want it, they will get it.
parrothead6970 Sep 22nd, 09, 11:40 PM thanks for the info.also thought of removing the coil wire
wills65 Sep 23rd, 09, 12:04 AM Dont know if you run an electric fuel pump, but you could pull the relay before you go in for the night. I do it with my Mustang everywhere I go. Also, there is the Grant steering wheel removal kit. I have on on the '70 and the wheel comes off anytime Im not in, or with the car. Alarms, kill switches, pulling relays, whatever...like they say, if they are determined to get your car they will.

JChilders Sep 23rd, 09, 6:50 AM switch two plug wires at night.easy to fix in the morning and the car will make a lot of noise if someonw tries to start it.
jeffs68 Sep 23rd, 09, 7:43 AM also try to park where a flat bed car hauler don't have easy access, they can load your car and be gone in 5 minutes..
GK-66SS Sep 24th, 09, 1:23 AM Here in Savannah, Ga, one of the most popular stolen cars for years has been the Monte Carlo SS. I have one that I put a big block and a 4-speed in. I have managed to keep it in my driveway using 2 items:
1) A steel steering column shroud
2) For a shifter, I have one of the old Hurst RAM-ROD vertical gate 4-speed shifters. If they ever managed to start the car, the thugs would never figure out how to shift it :)
tedixon Sep 24th, 09, 5:01 PM Anything that slows down a thief could possibly save your car from theft. I installed a hidden interrupter switch which disables the ignition. The parts cost about $10. It takes only seconds to arm or disarm this feature.
The ultimate protection is to have your car appraised and make sure that either your auto or home owner's policy covers it against theft. Pro thieves are usually more interested in Toyotas and Hondas that have a ready market for choped parts. Ironically, a place where classic cars are stolen is at a classic car shows.
Dropzilla Sep 24th, 09, 10:06 PM Obviously a flatbed will take my car 5 min.and I will piss my pants, but taking the steering wheel off is a possible prevention. I do it when my car is going to be left a lone for more then 67 seconds. It sounds nuts, but a couple tools and i take it to bed with me.l:) I lost a car before. I am scarred. It was found in Compton no bull****.
