: tool monster attacks again!
Shadowpit Sep 20th, 09, 7:22 PM Ever had this happen?
Well yesterday I was working on my car and I keep things organized for the most part except when the wife comes in then I find tools in the laundry room and random places around the house and back yard. Anyways yesterday I set my wrench down and then couldn’t find it. I swore I put it on the stool so I could just reach up and grab it but it wasn’t there so I grabbed another wrench and a few min later lost that one too. I stood around scratching my head asking myself wtf? I didn’t move more than 3 feet and lost 2 wrenches so far. This morning I decided put my front tires back on so I get it off the jacks. I put the lug nuts where I wouldn’t loose them in my container slot on the wall for one side and on the shelf on the other side out of the way. I put one tire on and went to go put the other tire on and could find my lug nuts. I swore up and down that I put them there so I wouldn’t loose them. So far 2 wrenches and a set of lug nuts so I said screw this and ripped apart the garage looking for them in boxes and still can’t find them. I asked the wife and she didn’t touch anything. Weird?

They always do.... I've probably bought a double of 60% of my tool collection because I know ahead of hand that in MY garage, something is going to go AWOL....
JNorton Sep 20th, 09, 7:37 PM One question for you...do you have kids?
Shadowpit Sep 20th, 09, 7:49 PM One question for you...do you have kids?
Yup I have a kid, but she stays out of the garage. She doesnt like getting dirty. it just boggles my mind that I lost 2 wrenches and didnt move more that 3 feet lol. maybe I was working them too hard and they bailed out on me. It was a saturday lol.
sabres07 Sep 20th, 09, 8:00 PM Yep....happens to me all the time. My personal nemesis is utility knives. I personally own about 10 of them. When I do a home improvement project, I routinely take out about three pf them and place them nearby while I am working. By the end of the project, I cannot find any of them. Very frustrating.....

bcice Sep 20th, 09, 8:17 PM I was cleaning the battery terminals on my wifes Malibu years ago and set the 1/2 inch wrench down on top of the air cleaner. When I went to reach for it, it was gone! I looked all over for that wrench and finaly went and got another one. When I got back to the car, there was the first wrench. Right on top of the air cleaner where I had left it. I was home alone, no one with me and the closest house an 8th mile away so I know no one was messing with me. I must have looked right through that wrench.
davewho1 Sep 20th, 09, 8:31 PM Poltergeists ... :D
classicfan1 Sep 20th, 09, 8:38 PM I've had this happen not just to tools and parts (bike parts, no car ). But I've had this happen to EVERYTHING IN THE HOUSE. We used to lose our remotes all the time and my dad eventually got his drill and drilled a hole in the battery compartment of the new remote. He got some thin white rope and tied it to the end table. After time had passed, the string started to break often and so one day I got sick of it and ripped it off. Now it seems fate has forgot to come and get the remote. (HELLO! IT AIN'T TIED UP NO MORE!)

Then I'm in trouble, I'm young and this happens to me too- if it gets worse when I'm older.... UH OH:eek:
Chevelle_Nut Sep 20th, 09, 9:08 PM To a 5 year old you are old, you have to keep things in perspective.
My wife says that misplacing stuff is a man thing, something could be right in front of us and we will miss it.
steve_sutherland Sep 20th, 09, 9:20 PM Your right, I guess thats true :)
It depends what is right in front me me, if its a bad@$$ muscle car- I'll see it right away and wont look away! lol

Yeah, well my wife was just cussing up a storm Saturday because she lost her drivers license...for the second time in a year. She tore the house and her car apart looking for it. For our daughter's sake, I hope it doesn't turn up in her purse with all the fake credit cards and spent gift cards she has in there. She's 6 years old, in case that sounded wierd to anyone.

Chris R Sep 21st, 09, 12:05 AM Dont feel bad. Im missing an manila envelope folder that has a few titles for a few vehicles I own in it. It is or was in my old bedroom at my parents house I it was in there when I last seen it many months ago. Now its no where to be found. None are of either of my Chevelles but one is for a car I would like to donate as it finally died after years of daily driving and the other is my tahoe which I dont plan to sell so im not bothered by it. I have a few other titles in there for various junkers im not too worried about at the moment. But ill tell you what, I have done everything short of stripping out every box and peice of merchandise in my storage room to find it and I know I have it somewhere. Ill probably end up having to do just that, a complete strip and remove of every box and item in there to find it.
justkyle Sep 21st, 09, 12:16 AM I spent 10 minutes looking for my cell phone once...
While I was talking to a friend on it.

Hot66ss Sep 21st, 09, 3:34 AM Welcome to the club. I own about 10 tape measures but I could not put my hands on one of them right now.
Krister Sep 21st, 09, 9:17 AM Welcome to the club. I own about 10 tape measures but I could not put my hands on one of them right now.
I thought I was the only one with the tape measure problem - I am the same way with chapsticks!
Lost a 5/8 socket in a friends Mustang engine compartment. It never hit the floor and we never found it.
dittoz Sep 21st, 09, 10:27 AM Anyone remember that old original Twilight Zone with the purple wrench...?
If you do, you know that explains everything !
Ark68SS Sep 21st, 09, 11:00 AM Most shops have a parallel universe. This is where all the tools and parts go. When the space/time continuum is no longer warped, they will reappear, but probably not in the place you lost them. I've been fighting this for years.

Dean Sep 21st, 09, 11:14 AM Have a couple of grandson's that just love tools so I find them everywhere.
Been trying to teach one of them to put stuff back where I had it. :clonk:
I think I sent one of my favorite #13 - 6 point impact sockets to the shredder in a 93 Cadillac the other day. :(
Wiley Sep 21st, 09, 12:52 PM I once spent 20 minutes looking for the pair of needle nose pliers that I had in my hand.:o
Dean Sep 21st, 09, 1:46 PM I spent 10 minutes looking for my cell phone once...

Sounds like me, looking for my glasses. :D

That redinded me about when a guy I worked with left the job early and forgot his cell phone. The guy that found it is not the sharpest person around. I told him to just call the guy and tell him to come back for the phone. HE CALLED. Enough said....

RAMBO Sep 21st, 09, 7:02 PM I've misplaced tools enough times to be part of the club- mainly tools i've just been using disapear...
Although i do have a special helper- Seems that darn near everytime i need "SOMETHING THAT WILL DO xxx" (you know, when you know what you need done, but don't know what tool) I stand up walk over to my bench or tool box and the next thing I pick up will work. Sometimes i won't even realize its something i have.
Sounds crazy- but its happened a bunch, Sometimes with the weirdest tasks. Just happened a few days ago again!
The Source? I have my grandpas 50 year old Stand up tool box. I was the only of his grandsons who was willing to spend a day going through all the stuff in his garage with him when he was about to move to the retirement home (died shorly after of cancer).
I seriously believe he's there helping me out... at least for the times when I don't know what tool I need.... Absolutly No help at all when I know the tool -WAS- right next to me though!!!
PaPa Johns 77 Sep 21st, 09, 7:15 PM Sounds like me, looking for my glasses. :D
That is why I went back to leaving them on the computer desk at night!
Decided that I should put them on the night stand so I could just put them on right when I got up. Worked great, except I would go get a cup of coffee and go to fire up the computer and start looking for my glasses!
After a few mornings I went back to leaving them on the computer desk again so I wouldn't lose them on my face anymore!
Bryan59EC Sep 21st, 09, 8:36 PM I pulled one of those moments lat friday when I got back to work from a North Carolina trip.
My boss asked me to stop by our offsite warehouse and look for a piece of equipment, even told me where it was. 4ft long x 3ft tall x 15" wide---AND I KNEW WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!!!
Walked past it 4 or 5 times--gave up and called my boss to tell him it was not there.
Today, I went back to the warehouse----and there it was-----felt like an idiot---hadda call the boss and tell him I found it.
steve_sutherland Sep 21st, 09, 8:43 PM I work a fruit/vegetable farm, but during the summer we store snowmobiles and stuff, during the winter we store cars- I put mine there and my moms. Last year I was supposed to go hook up the battery of a car to get it ready to be picked up by the owner. I lost the car:sad: I walked past the car a few times, looked at it, noticed the cool paint job, and kept looking for that exact car- but couldnt find it. My boss wasn't too happy when i had to go back to the other building and I told him I couldnt find it:noway: I know this isnt quite the same, but Bryan's story made me think of it lol.
(It must have been because the car was a mustang;))
torrey Sep 21st, 09, 9:11 PM I, too, have a tool monster; she's about two and a half feet tall and loves to play with my rachets, especially with sockets on them because of the noise they make. She usually puts them back in my tool box, just not in the right spot. It's a start, though.
79943 Sep 21st, 09, 9:27 PM i have had wrenches, keys and other things disappear on numerous occaisions. but one thing i remeber to this day really bugged me. it happened many years ago when employers still handed out paychecks. it was just before Christmas and i had just come home with my check. i had layed it down somewhere within sight but for some reason it just disappeared. i looked everywhere for that thing. i thougt i had most likely laid it down on a table in the living room but after checking them all several times i found nothing. i kept picking up this holiday candy/cookie tin that was sitting on one of the end tables and looking under it....nothing. finally after about the third time i picked up the tin for some reason i looked at the bottom of the tin. there was my paycheck, stuck to a sticky piece of glue that was left over from a price sticker on the bottom of the tin. i had laid my check on the table, someone had put the tin on top of it, the check had stuck to the tin and everytime i picked it up i picked up the check with it! man was i glad to find that one :).
1964elcamino Sep 21st, 09, 9:30 PM I had a tool monster like that she loved the 1/4 inch rachet for the size and noise.I had to buy her her own.... She is now 21 and still yells rachet when she hears the noise. KIDS ARE GREAT. Gary
Chicken Coupe Sep 22nd, 09, 7:37 AM One question for you...do you have kids?
I noticed a bunch of my screwdrivers were missing, so I called my son and asked the obvious question. Answer=nope.
Made a list to use at Sears, wife comes back downstairs, dumps 2 handfuls of tools on the counter and says, "Were you looking for these?"
The Deejay Sep 22nd, 09, 11:40 AM Simple explanation........."The Wrench Grinch"......my "Georgia Sockets"
disappear all the time....and seemingly reappear magically:p
steve_sutherland Sep 22nd, 09, 8:41 PM  I am rebuilding my motor right now, while taking out the valves to replace the seasl I set the one retainer/ washer thing on the workbench beside me, I saw it numerous times, and I went to go put it back in and its GONE! I loked for a half hour untl I was ready to hit something, Man i better find it- or send the tool monster over to one of your garages and borrow one for me from your motor ;)
PaPa Johns 77 Sep 22nd, 09, 11:54 PM I relayed this to a friend. I remembered he had a problem with dissappearing tools. he blamed his girls sometimes and they swore it wasn't them. He thought the bratty kid next door must be taking them. He lost an expensive 1/2" drive Snapon torque wrench!
I remembered the last time I had talked to him he asked if he had loaned it to me or if I knew who he might have lended it to! I had no answer.
Well he over the last year had replaced almost 600 dollars worth of tools!!!
Well he moved last month. They were down to cleaning out the back yard. The dog house had sunk into the ground so he and his friend grabbed the back and pulled it up out of the dirt rolling it forewards and he heard the unmistakeable sound of a tool box being tipped over!!! Looked around to the front intime to see several wrenches and sockets rolling out!
Appears his husky was starting a tool collection of his own! Including the brand new torque wrench!:D
Shadowpit Sep 25th, 09, 5:16 PM HA!! SOB I found my lug nuts! They were in my tool box. I looked in there like 5 times though before Then today when I reached for a socket I said hey there's one of my lug nuts and what do you know they were all together plain as day. Im a little drunk too so I think it helped. Vodka and redbull lol. Now I hope I find my wrench's lmao. woohoo!
steve_sutherland Sep 26th, 09, 5:14 PM was my valve spring retainer in there!?
I got some cans of laker in the fridge downstairs- I'll try your approach and see if I can find it :)
68KMENO Sep 26th, 09, 6:44 PM it can get very expensive losing wrenches !! ....... that is one of the main reasons I have those magnet rails to lay them out on the roll-able work table ..... its not only the cost of the tool .....but when you start the car & it goes through the radiator or hood
