I just put new shoes on the front of my 68 SS. I thought there would be and ajustment hole to put a fork to adjust the star wheel. There isnt. The book says to go in reverse using the brake. This will adjust the shoes. It doesnt seem to work. any suggestions?
Personally, I didn't know they made an SS w/ front drums.
On the adjuster, if things were together correct before, and you reassembled correctly, the lever 'should' adjust the brakes tight on multiple reverse stops.
Before I changed my '69 to front discs, and replaced all the rear hardware, I noticed that ALL FOUR of my brake adjusters had notches worn in the levers, and the star wheels were so worn that even a good flat blade screwdriver wouldn't catch it good enough to turn it.
Take the wheels back off, verify the assembly is correct (be sure you cleaned and 'lightly' lubed the adjuster), and check for the wear I described. I bet you're in the market for new adjuster hardware. My new hardware worked like a champ on the rears!
Hope that helps.

Front disk brakes were still an option in 68, option J52.
On your drums there should be a knock-out on the drum casting so you can access the star adjuster.
pop it out and you can get the rubber plugs at any dealer, brake shop, auto parts store.

My '68 doesn't have the knockouts either.
I remove the drum and turn the star-wheel out until it looks about right to me, then I put the drum on and check for a little drag when I turn the drum.
If the drum's tight going on, don't put it on. You'll have a very hard time getting it off to adjust it again.
I have discs on the front now, but I still have to adjust the rears this way when I change 'em.
Once you get it close, the self-adjuster should work for you if it's installed correctly.

Thanks for all your help. The repair book said to take the tire with the drum off together when doing a brake job. When i just took off the tire i could see the inspection slot on the drum. After that its easy to adjust.
