I've torqued my upper and lower ball joints to the specified numbers. Of course the slots don't line up to the holes. Do I loosen or tighten to get the proper line up?

For my '68 Chevelle it is 80 ft. lbs for the lower and 50 ft. lbs for the upper.

My 72 factory assembly manual calls for :
UPPEr - 40-60 lbs and 90 MAX to align cotter pin (NOTE-Do not back off nut for cotter pin insertion)
LOWER 70-90 lbs and 125 MAX to align cotter pi with same Note.
