Ok I know that when building or buying a "clone" or tribute car, it is all about the quality of the build, since the car was not a true Super Sport to begin with.I also know that many people have made 71 and 72's look like the 70 because they like the look better. I happen to agree.I like the looks of a 70 much better than the 71 or 72(except the rear bumper). My question is, if you were looking at a clone tribute whatever, would the fact that it was titled as a 72 but looked like a 70 deter you from buying it, even if it was well built? I have a nearly rust free 72 I am doing and was considering using 70 parts...the SS dash I have is from a 70,and I really love the 4 headlights and grill. I don't plan on selling it as it was my first car and has sentimental value...HOWEVER, In the event I do decide to sell later on...I don't want to be stuck with a bastard car nobody would want. So, would a 72 built as a 70 SS clone be more or less desirable than a 72 SS clone built from a 72 if build quality were equal? I sorta think it is "bojackie" to mix them but I love the 70's.

sadly yes it would be more desireble to an extent...but its still retarded...

Why is it retarded?

I am guessing by retarded you are talking about the making a '72 into a '70. If not then I appologize.

Personally I say do it she is your car and she should make you happy. I plan on doing it to mine when I get home. Besides do you really want to be cookie cutter?

:noway: not me

I've said it before, a 70-72 with a 70 front clip and a 71-72 rear bumper would be the best looking Chevelle ever.

I would like to see that...

but I would also suggest getting and keeping all the parts for the 72. I would also paint the 72 front end when the whole car is painted JUST IN CASE you want to change it back...

I happen to like the 70 bumper...

It would be a 'bastard" or "mutt" car and the resale value would be adjusted downward. But, a lot of hot rods from the '30's, '40's and 50's were customized using different year parts (and even makes) in the spirit of hot rodding. With the prices of cars coming down, you can buy the real deal now for a decent price and I think the price break or savings from building a clone are diminishing.

ME TOO!! I LOVE the four headlights but I hate the rectangle tail lights. If I did it it would have the 70 rear bumper as well...but I like the round tl better.

It would make me wonder if the 72 wasn't wrecked and some one just put the 70 clip on it.
I'd be concerned about frame damage and might not be inclined to buy the 'tribute' story.

Keep some pictures of the transformation for evidence. Does anyone have a picture of a car that's been done like this?

I completely agree. I can't figure out why there was never a 4 headlight, 4 taillight chevelle.

There is a guy on here that has a white '70, from Michigan, and the inboard headlights are yellow. I would make mine that way, I think it is cool.

I agree...

the only issue for me would be that maybe someone threw it together cheap, just to sell...

Personally, I'd make a video (seriously) showing the car with the original clip with no major damage and explain what you are doing and why (I'd show the "new" '70 parts at the same time)... If you have the space, I'd also hang on to the original front clip too...

I don't think it is mentally challenged to want a '70 front end on your car:noway: If that's want you want do it!

If it were my choice I would own a car with a '70 front and rear, together.;)

I have owned this car for 17 years...it was my 1st car. I have lots of pictures of it with it's 72 front end. I prefer the 72 rear bumper but to me that would look like a mutt car...if I do it it will look like a 70 and only guys who really know will be able to tell....I have a 70 dash with the green letters etc.....not sure what other tell tail signs there would be without looking at numbers....are there any? If I have the 70 dash, doghouse and rear bumper, will it be impossible to tell without looking at the trim or vin tag?

Personally. If it is your first car and you have no intention of selling it, do it up the way you want and to hell with the people that say otherwise. A previous post mentioned the 30's, 40's and 50's cars that have been modified with different year parts, and this is no different.

Nobody ever say's anything about those hotrods, so why should anyone say anything about yours. Go for it and make it yours!

On another note, I didn't know that you could bolt up a 70 front end to a 71, 72 car. That is a REALLY kool looking chevelle and I might think about it for my next one. I want a BBC monster that will smoke 'em anytime and don't care about what people think of it.

Everything is perception when selling these cars anyway. There are ALWAYS people that will buy anything.

NOT sure what you mean...it is a yenko look alike but that nova has the correct body panels....68-72 all looked the same. I have a 70 nova

I also have a 72 Nova....

The point being that yes the panels are the same but the engine, paint trim,
yenko stuff, hood trim as well as that 427 is not....plus the fact its a 72 done
as a 69 is what I was referring to.;)

I missed the part where it said it was a 72....I have a 70 but do not know all the little differences in the years...except the obvious quarter window difference in 73 up.

Hey Todd, Sorry for the confusion....I was just trying to show that Nova
is not what it really is either. But it is very well done so if your Chevelle is
done well it doesn't have to be true to what it is to be worth some good
cash if you sell it down the road.

um "dumb question time", as i have always payed more attention to 66 and 69 models, because thats what i had, could a 71-72 rear bumper be put on a 70? looks wise i think its the design chevy should have made 4 headlights, 4 tail lights, i know its not original but if building a car for your self i think it would look very sharp

72 has the horn relay on the firewall and most 72's have a fasten seat belt light.

Yeah I knew about the seat belt light....I have an SS dash and cluster from a 70 with green letters.

I had forgotten about the relay...Are you refering to the one by the Master Cylinder that feeds 12 volts to the fuse block? (I think) . Am I correct in thinking that the headlight harness is what feeds 12 volts ( from the relay on the core suppor) to the fuse block on 70-71?

Also, I think I read somewhere here about 70's having 2 different parking lamp lenses..either clear or amber...Is that true and if so which cars got what color?

The valance under the bumper also needs to be changed.

Might be kinda of cool. Rats rods came from guys that had no money they're cool.Back in the 50 & 60 there were no aftermarket parts companies like today you had to take a grill from another car and toss it into your Merc.

I've seen Foose take cooler looking parts from other cars and put them on different model years.

Make it look like something GM should have did but didn't and it'll look cool. Just do it right with interior, paint etc.

Do a search on here, Lots of info. Basically everything except the hood & inner wheel wells needs to be swapped.
