Hello all. New to the forums here and also new to Chevelle ownership. I recently purchased a 72 Chevelle from someone who converted it from an automatic to a 4 speed manual. He used a Super T10 Transmission and the shifter hits my seat in second gear. It looks to me it was just thrown in there as it looks like they drilled the original hole and then saw it wouldnt go there:mad:.

I have a hurst competition shifter with 2083 stamped on it. When I looked up to see if there were any hurst shifters that would fit a 72 chevelle with a console or atleast that wouldnt hit my seat I had some trouble. My question is there another shifter that I can use so that it will fit better and that can fit with a console..or atleast that wont hit my seat when i hit second gear. Thanks for your time guys:D

Contact Summit and tell the what make model you have and they should be able to give you the correct linkage/shifter kit for your car. I converted my 65' to a four speed and use the correct console without issue.

if the shifter handle bolts on I have taken some 1/4" strap, drilled holes at an angle that would tilt the shift lever forward when bolted to the strap. orienting the strap vertical, drill lower hole at 5 oclock and the upper at 11 as close as you can. it will also give you a little longer stick.

Not sure, but I'd think that all you need is the correct handle for a bench seat. The shifter itself should be just fine. Hopefully someone with the same combo as you can come in and confirm or deny that.

It's possible adjusting the linkage a bit could also pull the handle away from the seat enough.

Your T10, is it aluminum or is the main case cast iron??? Also do you know if the output is 32 spline or smaller???

Not all T10s are created equal and does make a difference.

The handle is not a bolt on. When I got my Super T-10, it had a short, straight shifter handle (originally in a Vette I was told). I had the seller swap that out for a longer, curved handle.

Hey guys thanks for your responses... My Chevelle has bucket seats so the problem is that the shifter is too far left..I will contact Summit and ask them about it when I get home from Vacation. I will also check on the T10 about the aluminum or cast iron and the spline. This is my first restore so I am learning as I go along of course. I appreciate the information guys and I'm sure I will be posting on here more.

Great site on the SuperT10 here:

It sounds like you've got the wrong shifter assembly in there. I don't think the Chevelle ever used a ST10 stock, so you may need to tweak things a bit to get it all to play together, but I'd start with Hurst setup for a Muncie and go from there. I went this woute when I dropped a ST10 in my '69 Camaro. Needed to tweak the shifter mount and shift wods a bit to get the shifter to line up with the factory console...

Regarding the shifter -- GM uses a "bayonette" style clip to attatch the shifter handle to the shifter on the factory Hurst shifters -- and they also did not use the stop bolts to prevent the shifter from over-travelling. The aftermarket Hurst jobs all have the stop bolts and bolt-on handle I think.

No GM car ever came with a true Super T-10. The cast iron case 904 ST-10 was a over the counter speed shop deal, GM did use a imitation verion with a aluminum main case, 903, starting in 1975 after the Muncie was dropped.

It's important to know which trans you are dealing with since GM has used the BW since 1956 in one form or another,
