: Aluminum radiator and Taurus electric fan, tie straps cause leaks?
mjdwyer23 Sep 18th, 09, 9:04 AM Hey Folks-
I am putting a new electric fan on my aluminum radiator to replace the toasted one that came on it. The current fan has a shroud that allows it to strap to the exterior of the radiator. The new fan (two speed taurus) does not. A coworker of mine told me that using the mounting tabs that push through the radiator will cause pinhole leaks over time. Is this correct? Should I avoid using these mounting kits for my application? Thanks,
shonuff Sep 18th, 09, 9:41 AM If you can I would avoid poking anything through my radiator.... I know some guys will disagree, but jegs and summit sells mounting brackets that mount the fan from the top and bottom.... If your on a budget, go to Home Depot or lowes and buy some L shape or steel brackets, then make your own.... Its up tp you bro.......:D Some guys I know have had leak problems going through the radiator, but some guys have not..... Most don't want to bother with trying to stilck anything even a temp rod through the radiator.......
mjdwyer23 Sep 18th, 09, 9:46 AM Cool, I'll do that. Thanks.
twotone64 Sep 18th, 09, 2:40 PM I made some brackets for my new alum. radiator the shroud at the bottom of my taurus fan was perfect to fit in the gap, the top is held in with the push style fasteners.
bikeron Sep 18th, 09, 2:59 PM I don't think it's a good idea. It's stress that the radiator was never designed for.
Maybe Don (Alumitech) has an opinion...or experience with this?

wreckfixer Sep 21st, 09, 8:28 PM I am running an aluminum rad and taurus fan on my 65 elky and I love it :hurray: runs arounds 200-205 degrees on the hiway come into town it drops to190 or less! and i did make brackets for mine,1/2" strap on top and bottom (all the way across)bent into an L on both ens drilled some holes 1/4" bolts to hold the fan to the straps then mouted them to the rad. bolts. ps i did use a 2" hole saw bit and drill some vent holes to get more air flow at hiway speeds. hope this helps.

mjdwyer23 Sep 25th, 09, 7:54 PM Well I have everything mounted and wired -- the fan kicks on just like it should. I am a little nervous about taking it on the road, I really don't want to overheat again. I'm going to try and hit the inspection lane on monday morning, and we'll see what happens. I may need to upgrade my alternator as well, it currently only has a stock model.
