I just had my 67 in shop today because of leaking axle seals diff and wheel bearings had been replaced early on in rebuild but as soon as I started driving it they seeped oil diff shop said that axles worn and seals didnt work so replaced both axles etc fixed problem they also said that federal mogul make bearings that have seal both sides of bearing but down here in australia they were going to take time to source if this is such a comman problem with 10 bolts and presume 12 bolts too is there another way to fix other than sleaveing axle or is replace only way?

Hi Craig-

They will do axle saver sleeves around here but it's not recommended, especially for performance applications. Replacing the axles, bearings and seals at the same time is the best idea and will last the longest without having to do anything else for a long time. I have not seen or heard of the bearings with seals on both ends...but that sort of seems like it could be a problem with no oil getting to the bearings for lubrication.

When I took my stock 10 bolt axles down for new studs, the guy thought they were worn too far...I told him they didn't leak before, so he measured them. Sure enough they're still good, I think he said somewhere around .010 is the limit for wear on an axle where it rides on the bearing....I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm wrong which is a definite possibility.

Sometimes they leak between the seal sheet metal shell and the diff housing, especially if it's had axle saver bearings in it before (BTDT). The fix is to put a smear of RTV on the OD of the seal shell before installing. Be sure to clean the mating surface of the diff housing well with brake cleaner, lacquer thinner, etc.

The axle saver bearings are usually trouble. I've had a few sets leak as soon as they were installed. Replacing the axles is the best fix.
