How do I separate the backing plate from the spindle on my 66 w/drum brakes. It looks like two regular bolts and a bolt or nut with the stud for the brake springs to hang on. I got the other two bolts out easy. the one with the spring thingy is stuck. Am I on the right track. Im taking the whole front end apart to clean up all the parts and replace the hardware. thanks

I believe you are on the right track. Try spraying some WD-40 on it and then try on it again. graemlins/beers.gif

The pivot stud has a pair of tangs that are part of the sheet metal backing plate bent up over the flats. Bend them out of the way with a puch or screwdriver.

Yep, that should do you. Good luck and keep us posted with the front end rebuild. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I think that the term is "anchor pin" for the huge bolt that the springs hook to and the shoes touch on. I would try jolting it with a drift and a hammer. This may shake it loose enough to get it moving.

An impact gun will do the trick to get that pivot bolt loose.

You guys are all too high tech, a good quality ratchet handle with a 3-4 foot piece of pipe on it has broken loose any bolt or nut that's ever given me trouble!
