: I was just reading about Facebook on CNN

I was just reading on CNN that Facebook users are nearly as many as the US population.
First of all, I don't know what Facebook, tweeter, blogging, etc, etc, are. But as I understand it, Facebook is an internet site where people can put anything they want about themselves for ANYONE to read about them. Is that right? I've asked here before what these things are, and no one has answered my question.
With that said, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND why in God's green earth a person would want to put stuff about themselves out there on the internet for all the world to have access to! That just totally baffels me! It really seem dumb as well as poor judgement. Also, as I understand, some of the information that people have put on the internet about themselves (a good example is idiots that video crimes or stupid acts they commit) has come back to bite them in the rear------------sometimes really hard!
Can someone here, who is Facebook, tweeter, etc, etc, etc, savy explain this to me?

Tom, they're really no more then networking tools used for catching up or keeping in touch fith friends.. You're not putting any useful information on them..

And trust me when I say this........There is already way more information on you online then you care to believe..

Being in the military and moving a lot it is an easy way to find and keep in touch with people all over the place. On facebook only people who are friends with you can view your profile/ pictures / videos.

It's POSSIBLE to set up your site for anyone to see. But it is also possible to keep it private. That is how my account is set. I have relatives around the country as well as people I went to school with. It's an easy way to share pictures/videos/thoughts with dozens or in some cases hundreds of people all at once. But people must request to be your "friend" and you must allow them before they can see your profile. As far as Twitter goes, again it allows you to send and receive short messages to a large group of people through your cell phone (typically). You request to "follow" people or the other way around. You can ignore or block people on an individual basis. I follow a few people but can't say I've ever sent a message myself.

10 years ago, people thought you were a "nerd" if you had "friends" that you only knew through online forums.

If you EVER call a family member or a friend, and you chat with them about what youve been up too, where you visited over your vacation, or emailed pictures to someone or sent them pictures in the snail mail, you do the exact thing that I do and millions of others do on face book, just using the internet instead of old technology.

Do a zaba search. If you pay you can get copies of birth/death certificates, phone numbers (listed and unlisted) previous addresses, current address, social security numbers of deceased, and lots more.

I have a facebook. I use it just to talk with friends. It's free to send and share pictures unlike my phone. Alot of people are using it for job networking.

You only share as much as you want, it's no different then walking outside and going out into public. Some people will wear a suit, some people will dress casual, others have no limits and would walk outside naked if they knew they wouldn't get in trouble.....and some do it anyway!

Home phone number? Alot of people won't give that out and it's not even needed nowadays.
I just searched his name and got his full name, address, home phone and could pay some money and get a background check and property report

I get Toms point, I was just razzin. I am anti facebook and those other sites because I still believe in the real world. TC is my ONLY semi-social site I visit and I dont use the internet, personally, for anything other than TC and car parts, car research. Other than that I still step outside or pick up a phone.

The thing I do not understand is not so much why people post things about themselves (human nature, people like to talk about who they are and what they do and their interests) but rather why OTHER people actually read it. Family I guess I understand but honestly I dont really care what your favorite food is that day, what you did yesterday or whatever else people "blog" about. Thats one phenom I will never understand. Bloggers....well....losers in cheap clothes with no jobs and nothing else to do that seem to be followed, appeciated and worshipped by folks that are worse off. Which tells me through deduction that blogging and blogger reading equates to being a loser and is the internet equiavalent of the guy outside my office right now on the street corner yelling about his opinions, religious beliefs, etc. The original blogger is / was a mentally challenged drunk in pee stained suit pants. Thus, I stay away.

I followed the recommendations of a blogger. :D

In all honesty - because I am just not right in the head and nothing is ever good enough. Got tired of doing and re-doing, failure, redo it....just said forget it and went full bore so I know whats what, where all the problems were and thats its all rock solid. It had a few issues so it was either patch and make it "ok" or go nuts and make it better than when it left the factory. I prefer nuts.

Good show. I like plays on words. :D lol

Lets just say there was a reason that picture was taken from 20+ feet away. If you look at the front fender in that shot where the bumper comes back you can see a ding in the crease where it was pushed into the fender. Had the normal rust issues. Its a solid and fairly stright car but deserving of what I am doing because its my true love (the wife already knows)

plus im taking it from stock to pro-touring side, old frame was a bit tweaked so...off I go. :D

Kind of funny. My son started his page about 3 weeks ago and he has already recieved 70 contacts from people from the past. My past mostly!!!l:)
41 of them are from former coworkers and people I served with! 11 are his old friends and the rest are people looking for a different person, same name!
I'm Johnny, his name is John. But I used to hate my name and refused to use the whole thing and went as John and that is how most of the people that I associated with years ago knew or remembered me!:D

It is kind of like the people that refuse to do a wire transfer because of the info required, but give a check to a minimum wage clerk in a convenience store that contains the exact same stuff. Do you not think that whoever has a lense that can look at you in your yard does not have another one that can see everything else they want to.

Tom,

I'm a server and mainframe admin in a really large data center belonging to a very large financial services company. Trust me, you'd be appalled to know how much these people either know about you or can find out quickly.

It's really not much different than it used to be hanging out at a pool hall or tavern, just the perps are further away.

One of the bad things people do on facebook is saying they're going to be away for the weekend. There could be some bad apples out in the "friend" list who'd love to burglarize your place.

On the bright side, the cops love facebook because they can track down who might have done it.

Again, only if your account is "open" can anyone else see what you have written.

I meant your friends can see what you wrote and those "friends" aren't always friends.
Also, if your account is private, people can still see who your friends are. Not sure if you can lock that down too.

It's great for announcements (like a new baby born...a wedding coming up or that's already happened).

It's the same idea as texting...but with a ton more options. People spend WAY too much time on there though...my sister has 500 friends...I didn't even know she knew that many people....

After all...she lives in Hesperia...how many people can she know?:p:D

Don't be naive and think its private and only "friends" can read or view it. Its been the favorite hack site for many of the bad people in this world for sometime now. You would be surprised at how many FBI analysts and intenet crime agents are kept busy by it everyday.

It's great having a very common name on FB. Takes people forever to filter through all the others with the same name to get to the right one, and mostly they get bored before they find me.

I graduated from Hesperia High School :) . No, really, I did. That place sucked!

Facebook, Myspace, Tweeter, blogging were setup for the news media to quote from instead of doing actual investigative reporting. When a reporter has to resort to searching Tweets or FB postings for quotes and blogs for information to fill their story, you know they SUCK and should be fired on the spot. I've done the MySpace thing, texting, internet chatting (back in the early days of the Internet), met a few girls, but I think it's just a waste of my time now. More important things to do than sit on the Internet after work and get nothing done. Team Chevelle is my social site.

I didn't catch the source. On a radio blurb some insurance companies were considering adjusting insurance rate for those that had face book, tweeter accounts etc.

Reminds me of news papers listing family members in obituaries along with funeral times. The grieving members come home and find their homes robbed.
